Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Marked Messenger

The clouds above the cemetery had begun to part as the small group left the gravesite, the wind carrying the scent of damp earth and fading flowers. Lyra and Rowan clung briefly to the wooden swing . lingering in the memory before .Raina guided the twins to the sleek black car, Lucian following quietly, his eyes sweeping the crowd one last time before they drove off . A few blocks away, the sun warmed a quiet café tucked into a side street. The aroma of fresh pastries and brewed coffee wrapped around them like a soft shield against the chill of the morning. Raina, Lucian, and the twins settled into a corner booth with a perfect view of the street, the twins' laughter momentarily lightening the weight of grief.

Mini éclairs, chocolate tarts, and delicate macarons were spread across the table. Lyra giggled as she broke off a piece of chocolate, smearing the corner of her lips, while Rowan studied his tart with careful attention, savoring every bite.

The twins were entirely unaware that the world outside the café was far more dangerous than the sweetness before them.

Albert approached, moving silently, his tablet in hand. He lowered himself into the chair beside Raina, careful not to disturb the moment of fragile normalcy. "Miss," he said, voice low, "you need to see this. It just came through."

Raina's eyes flicked to him, calm, deliberate. "Go on."

He placed the tablet gently on the table and tapped the screen. Footage played, showing Selena walking briskly along a city street earlier that day. Her handbag swung at her side. A small, ordinary-looking woman approached, glancing over her shoulder with a hint of panic. Then, in one smooth motion, she brushed Selene's bag and slipped something inside—a tiny chip—before vanishing into the crowd.

Three figures dressed in black appeared seconds later, moving fast and precise, scanning the street. The woman ducked behind a corner, disappearing entirely. Selena continued on, unaware of what had just happened.

Raina's eyes narrowed. She zoomed in, focusing on the white lab coat the woman wore. Above the pocket, faintly embroidered, was a signature—a small but unmistakable mark.

"See this?" Raina whispered, voice quiet but edged with steel. "Not an employee. Not a delivery. This is intentional. Whoever she is… she wanted this unnoticed. And yet… they left a mark."

Albert added, "Encrypted files likely in the chip. Whoever sent it wanted it delivered, and whoever was following her… they wanted it back."

Lucian leaned forward. "A target or a courier?"

Raina's eyes flicked from the screen to the twins, happily eating their pastries. "A courier. A clever one. But clever or not… she made a mistake by being followed. Someone was watching,.

Albert scrolled through the footage, showing the shadows trailing the woman. "Three figures. Fast. Methodical. They didn't miss a step."

Raina pressed a finger to her lips, thinking. But I've already seen their patterns." Her eyes softened briefly as she glanced at the twins, oblivious to the deadly game unfolding around them. "Enjoy your desserts," she said softly.

Lucian's hand brushed hers lightly. "You're sure about this?"

Raina's lips curved faintly. "I always am." She returned her gaze to the screen, studying the signature, the woman's movements, the shadows that had followed her. Every detail mattered. Every trace was a message.

Outside, the world moved on. Inside, the warm café was a fragile bubble of peace.

The twins laughed again, chocolate-smeared and blissful. And for now, they remained safe, unaware that danger had just slipped into their world.
