Chapter 86 - Chapter 85: The Nightmare Returns

It started small.

A flicker in the corner of Jay's eye. A whisper too soft to understand. A cold draft in a warm room.

She ignored it at first. Everyone had weird moments at Black Hollow. Ghosts were part of the curriculum.

But then the flickers became shapes. The whispers became words. The cold became something that followed her.

Jay...

She spun around. Empty hallway.

Jay... we've been waiting...

Her heart pounded. She knew that voice. From the forgotten floor. From the nightmares.

"No," she whispered. "You're gone. We defeated you."

A laugh. Hollow. Echoing.

You defeated nothing.

She found Keifer in his office. Didn't knock. Just burst in.

"They're back."

He looked up from his papers. "Who?"

"The shadows. From the forgotten floor. I heard them. In the hallway."

Keifer stood. Moved to her. "Are you sure?"

"I know that voice. I'll never forget it."

He pulled her close. "Then we fight them again."

"Together."

"Always together."

That night, the shadows attacked.

Not just in dreams. In reality. Students screamed. Hallways went dark. The temperature dropped so fast breath became fog.

Jay and Keifer ran. Found their friends in the common room. Lyra was holding a candlestick like a weapon. Adrian was taking readings. Bella was sketching the shadows (for documentation). Mila was shielding first-years. Daniel stood in front of everyone, ready to fight.

"What's happening?" Lyra yelled.

"The shadows," Jay said. "They're back. Stronger."

"Stronger HOW?"

"Targeting fears."

The shadows formed shapes. Twisted versions of everyone's worst nightmares.

For Lyra: her friends leaving her. For Adrian: his data meaning nothing. For Bella: her art forgotten. For Mila: being unable to save anyone. For Daniel: being truly alone.

For Jay: Keifer. Empty. Cold. Gone.

"You left," the shadow-Keifer said. "You always leave."

Jay's hands shook. "You're not real."

"Aren't I?"

"NO."

She threw magic at it. The shadow dissolved. Re-formed. Laughing.

You can't destroy us. We ARE you.

Keifer fought his own shadow.

A version of his father. Cold. Judgmental. Disappointed.

You're weak, the shadow said. You always were.

"You don't know me."

I am you. The part you hide. The part that will never be good enough.

"Good enough for what?"

For her.

Keifer looked at Jay. Fighting her own shadow. Terrified. Brave.

"I am good enough for her," he said quietly. "Because she chose me. And I choose her. Every day."

The shadow screamed. Dissolved.

The battle lasted hours.

Students fought together. Teachers joined. Principal Morticia appeared with containment spells.

But the shadows kept coming.

Finally, as dawn approached, they retreated. Fading with the darkness.

But everyone knew. They'd be back.

Jay collapsed against Keifer. Exhausted. Shaking.

"We didn't win," she whispered.

"We survived."

"That's not enough anymore."

He held her tighter. "Then next time, we win."

In the morning, the school was damaged but standing.

Students helped each other. Cleaned up. Healed. Talked.

Lyra's whiteboard was somber.

THE SHADOW ATTACK

Casualties: 0 (miraculously)

Fear Level: MAXIMUM

Bravery Level: HIGHER

Jayfer Status: STILL TOGETHER

THEY'LL BE BACK. WE'LL BE READY.

Jay read it. Nodded.

Keifer appeared beside her. No coffee today. Just him.

"Ready for whatever comes next?"

"Ready for you."

They walked away together.

The shadows would return. But so would they.

Always together.
