Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 The Night the Sky Split

It began without warning.

No scouts.

No messenger.

No declaration.

The sky tore open.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

Above the Unbound's territory, the air split like flesh beneath a blade. Red fractures spread across the clouds. Sigils burned across the skyline—old human ownership marks reactivating simultaneously.

Kaelith felt it first.

She was already moving before the first explosion hit.

The western wall disintegrated in a column of fire.

Screams followed.

Elias was on his feet instantly.

System alerts flooded his vision.

Territory Under Siege

Attack Source: Multiple

Ownership Claim: Contested

Enemy Alignment: Human Coalition

Authority Conflict: Severe

Grath roared as flaming debris rained down across the courtyard.

Nyx dragged two younger demons behind cover.

Serathis' wings flared, casting radiant shields across the central district.

But the attack did not stop.

It intensified.

Human war mages stood on distant rooftops beyond the Unbound's territory lines. Enchanted artillery constructs rotated into position along elevated districts.

The Gilded Accord had made its move.

And they had not come alone.

A second fracture split the sky—

And through it descended chained war-beasts.

Massive.

Mutated.

Bound in glowing contract sigils.

Demons.

Enslaved demons.

Elias' stomach dropped.

"They're using them," Talyra whispered in horror.

Of course they were.

Nothing sent a clearer message.

The first war-beast landed inside the Unbound's outer perimeter.

Its collar flared.

Its eyes were empty.

Forced.

Commanded.

It charged.

Grath intercepted it mid-stride.

Stone shattered beneath their impact.

But Grath was not fighting a mindless creature.

He was fighting someone owned.

And the war-beast hesitated—

Just long enough for a control spike to surge through its collar.

It screamed as pain forced it forward.

Kaelith's blade severed one chain binding its forelimb.

The collar flared violently.

The demon convulsed.

Elias' Abyssal Perception activated.

The contract network wasn't local.

It was anchored remotely.

This wasn't a raid.

This was demonstration.

A voice echoed across the battlefield—amplified magically.

Valen.

"You destabilize lawful order."

"You free property."

"You challenge established hierarchy."

Another explosion ripped through a housing block.

"You will learn the cost of defiance."

The sky split wider.

More war-beasts fell.

Five.

Seven.

Ten.

All enslaved.

All weaponized.

The Unbound defenders surged forward.

And chaos erupted.

Territory Effect Active

Coordinated Surge Triggered

Shared Growth Amplified

Elias stepped into the courtyard.

The fragment inside him pulsed violently.

It wanted to devour.

Not selectively.

Not carefully.

Everything.

Rage.

He felt it rising.

Not his.

The fragment's.

These demons were suffering.

Bound.

Forced to attack those who had freed others like them.

The fragment whispered:

End it.

Consume the contracts.

Consume the mages.

Consume the sky.

He clenched his fists.

If he overextended—

If he unleashed Devour fully—

He might win.

But at what cost?

Another explosion tore through the eastern perimeter.

Nyx screamed as a collapsing tower nearly crushed her.

Elias moved.

Rift Step.

He caught the falling debris with raw strength amplified by Shared Growth.

His body trembled under the strain.

System warnings flashed.

Overextension Risk: Rising

Fragment Activity: Elevated

Corruption Probability: Increasing

The nearest war-beast broke free of Grath's hold and lunged toward a group of civilians.

Elias did not hesitate.

Devour activated mid-motion.

Target: Contract Anchor (Remote Sigil Chain)

High Complexity

Volatile Outcome

Rolling…

The air around the war-beast's collar warped.

Outcome: Skill Steal

New Skill Acquired: Contract Disruption (Limited)

Contract Disruption:

• Sever one active magical binding

• High mana cost

• Causes backlash

Elias slammed his hand against the collar.

Mana detonated outward.

The sigils shattered.

The war-beast collapsed—

Not dead.

Free.

It looked up at him, confused.

Then at the battle around them.

Then it turned—

And charged the human artillery lines instead.

The backlash hit.

Hard.

Elias coughed blood as black veins pulsed briefly across his arm.

Hidden Stat Alert:

Dominion +1

Corruption Trace: Minor

Kaelith saw it.

"Elias!"

"I'm fine."

He wasn't.

The fragment was no longer merely restless.

It was angry.

Because he wasn't feeding it enemies.

He was feeding it systems.

Breaking structures.

The sky fracture widened further.

A new presence stepped through.

Tall.

Armored in white and gold.

Human.

But stronger than the others.

A high-ranked Authority Knight.

His gaze locked directly onto Elias.

"So," the knight said calmly, blade igniting.

"You're the founder."

Elias stepped forward.

Behind him—

The Unbound were holding.

Barely.

Buildings burned.

Freed demons fought enslaved kin.

The night sky bled red.

The knight pointed his blade.

"Surrender your authority."

"And we end this cleanly."

Elias looked around.

At the destruction.

At the civilians trying to survive.

At the war-beasts still chained.

At the mages raining fire.

His Willpower surged.

The fragment surged with it.

This was the fork.

He could surrender.

Reduce casualties.

Save lives tonight.

But the Unbound would never stand again.

Or—

He could escalate.

And the war would become open.

Permanent.

Bloody.

He exhaled slowly.

"No."

The knight smiled faintly.

"Then burn."

They clashed.

The knight was faster than expected.

His blade carved a line across Elias' shoulder.

Holy energy burned deep.

Not radiant like Serathis.

Structured.

Law-bound.

Elias countered with Rift Step.

Struck with amplified strength.

The knight blocked.

Shockwaves split the courtyard.

The fragment pushed again.

Devour.

Devour him.

Devour his authority.

Take it.

End it.

Elias activated Devour mid-strike.

Target: Authority Knight (High Tier)

Extreme Variance

Rolling…

Outcome 1: +2 to All Stats

Outcome 2: Random Negative Buff

→ -3 Intelligence (Temporary)

Outcome 3: Random Hidden Stat Gain

→ Luck +1 (Revealed)

Luck:

• Influences high-variance outcomes

• Previously hidden

The knight staggered slightly.

Elias' strike slipped past his guard.

Luck.

The irony almost made him laugh.

But the negative debuff hit hard.

His thoughts slowed momentarily.

The fragment pushed harder into that gap.

Corruption Probability: Moderate

Black energy flickered briefly around Elias' eyes.

Kaelith saw it.

Serathis saw it.

The knight saw it.

"Ah," the knight whispered.

"There it is."

"You are not what you pretend to be."

Rage flared inside Elias.

He drove forward with everything he had.

Shared Growth flared across the battlefield.

The Unbound surged.

Grath shattered another collar.

Freed demons turned on their former masters.

The sky fractures destabilized.

The human mages began to retreat.

The Authority Knight took one final strike from Elias—

And stepped backward through a closing rift.

"This isn't over," he said calmly.

The sky sealed.

Silence fell.

Smoke filled the air.

Buildings burned.

Bodies lay scattered across the courtyard.

Some alive.

Some not.

Elias stood trembling in the center of it all.

System notifications flooded in.

Territory Status

Structural Damage: 38%

Civilian Casualties: Moderate

Faction Loyalty: Increased

Human Reputation: Hostile

War State: Active

Kaelith approached slowly.

Her eyes lingered on the fading black veins on his arm.

"You held back."

"Yes."

"You could have ended him."

"Yes."

She nodded once.

"Good."

Elias looked around at the destruction.

The Unbound were alive.

But the message had been delivered.

The humans would escalate.

And the demons watching—

Would see weakness.

The fragment pulsed again.

Not satisfied.

Hungry.

He closed his eyes.

He had chosen restraint.

Tonight.

But the war had officially begun.

And darkness—

Was starting to answer back.
