Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 Temptation in the Dark

The tunnel narrowed the farther they walked.

The whispering behind them slowly faded, though Elias could still feel the presence of the Whispered Husks trapped in the chamber they had escaped. Their voices lingered like echoes in his mind.

The air grew warmer.

Too warm.

Nyx noticed it too.

"…This level feels different."

Elias nodded slowly.

"It is."

The stone walls had changed again.

The jagged surfaces now curved inward, forming a corridor that felt almost… deliberate. The faint red glow from earlier had deepened, pulsing slowly through veins in the rock like blood beneath skin.

Each pulse matched Elias's heartbeat.

Nyx glanced sideways at him.

"You're glowing again."

He looked down.

The silver veins across his arms were brighter now.

"Great," Nyx muttered.

"What?"

"That usually means something bad is about to happen."

They kept walking.

The tunnel widened slightly ahead, opening into a circular chamber lit by a faint crimson glow.

At its center—

Something floated.

A small shard of crystal.

Dark silver.

Spinning slowly in the air.

The moment Elias saw it—

His breath caught.

Subterranean Awareness: 97%

His mind screamed a single realization.

Fragment.

Not a dungeon heart.

Not exactly.

But something related.

Something ancient.

Nyx stepped closer.

"You recognize it."

"Yes."

"What is it?"

"I think it's part of the system controlling the spiral."

Nyx frowned.

"You mean the seal?"

"Something like that."

But as Elias stepped toward it—

The world shifted.

The crimson light deepened.

The chamber blurred.

And suddenly—

He was somewhere else.

Soft light filled the room.

Warm.

Golden.

The smell of fresh air replaced the damp rot of the dungeon.

Elias blinked slowly.

He stood in a peaceful clearing.

Green grass.

Sunlight.

Birds singing softly.

And someone stood in front of him.

Nyx.

But not in armor.

Her silver hair flowed freely in the wind, loose around her shoulders. She wore simple clothing, lighter than anything she normally chose for battle.

She looked… peaceful.

"Elias."

Her voice was soft.

He frowned.

"This isn't real."

Nyx stepped closer.

"Does it matter?"

The warmth in the air felt comforting.

Inviting.

No whispers.

No monsters.

Just her.

"You've been fighting so long," she continued quietly.

"Carrying the weight of everything."

She reached out and touched his chest lightly.

Right over his heart.

"You don't have to fight here."

Her hand was warm.

Too warm.

His mind tried to resist.

"This is a hallucination."

Nyx smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

She stepped closer again.

Now only inches away.

"But it's showing you something true."

His heart beat faster.

Devour pulsed quietly.

The dungeon was studying him.

Learning his desires.

His fears.

Nyx's fingers slid gently along his arm.

"You're allowed to want something for yourself."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"Not just duty."

Elias closed his eyes briefly.

The warmth felt real.

Her presence felt real.

Too real.

When he opened his eyes—

She was even closer.

Her hand resting lightly against his cheek.

"You could stay here," she whispered.

"Just for a while."

Her breath brushed his skin.

Soft.

Warm.

Inviting.

The dungeon was testing him.

Tempting him.

Not with violence.

With comfort.

With affection.

With the quiet longing he had barely admitted to himself.

For a brief moment—

He wanted to stay.

Then something cut through the illusion.

A distant voice.

"Elias!"

Nyx's voice.

The real one.

The illusion flickered.

The peaceful clearing shattered.

He was back in the chamber.

Nyx was gripping his shoulders.

Hard.

Her eyes were wide with concern.

"You stopped moving."

Elias blinked.

"How long?"

"Almost a minute."

He looked back toward the floating shard.

The crimson light pulsed again.

"It was in my head."

Nyx frowned.

"What was?"

"A vision."

Her expression darkened.

"Let me guess. It tried to convince you to stop fighting."

"Yes."

"And?"

Elias hesitated.

"…It used you."

Nyx didn't look surprised.

"Of course it did."

She stepped closer.

Lowering her voice.

"What exactly did it show you?"

He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

"…You being very persuasive."

Nyx raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

His ears reddened slightly.

She smirked.

"Now I'm curious."

Elias shook his head.

"Not the time."

Nyx leaned closer slightly.

"But did it work?"

He looked at her.

Really looked at her.

The real Nyx.

Armor scratched from battle.

Hair slightly messy from the descent.

Eyes sharp and alive.

"No."

"Why not?"

He smiled faintly.

"Because it got one thing wrong."

Nyx tilted her head.

"What?"

He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"You'd never ask me to stop fighting."

Nyx stared at him for a second.

Then she smiled.

Softly.

"Good answer."

Before he could react—

She pulled him into a quick kiss.

Short.

Warm.

Certain.

Then stepped back.

"Just to make sure the hallucination doesn't get all the credit."

Elias laughed quietly.

But the shard at the center of the chamber pulsed again.

Stronger.

The dungeon had learned something new.

It knew how to tempt him.

But now—

It also knew something else.

He wasn't fighting alone.

And deeper below—

Something far more dangerous had awakened.

Something that fed on desire itself.
