Chapter 13 - -A voice beyond time

Whew… that should be all I need, Orion muttered with a tired sigh, stretching slightly as he leaned back in his chair. The weight of the past few days pressed heavily on his shoulders, a mixture of sleepless nights and constant studying that had blurred together into a single exhausting stretch of time. His final paper for the term was approaching, the last obstacle before he could finally leave the campus and return home.

Just one more paper, he thought, and I can finally leave. His eyes drifted across the stacks of material spread across his bed, textbooks half open, loose sheets filled with scribbled notes, and beside them the glowing surface of his tablet. The device, sleek and thin, projected his study notes across its surface in layered holographic panels, a standard academic tool among the university students known as an AetherPad. Orion scrolled through the material absentmindedly, reviewing concepts he already knew by memory more out of habit than necessity.

As he moved through the files, the screen shifted and a photograph appeared. Orion's fingers stopped moving. It was a picture of him and Sofia, taken months earlier somewhere along the quiet gardens of the campus. The two of them stood side by side, sunlight filtering through the tall trees behind them while Sofia leaned slightly closer with that calm confidence she always carried.

Orion stared at the image longer than he meant to, a thoughtful expression settling over his face as memories began to rise uninvited. What really happened to us? The thought surfaced quietly. Why did everything change because of the meteor? Another possibility crept into his mind, one he didn't particularly enjoy entertaining. Or were we together because she needed something from me? He lowered the tablet slowly and leaned back against the headboard of his bed.

The room around him was simple but comfortable, a space that had slowly become familiar during his time at the university. The bed itself was slightly larger than standard, two pillows resting against the frame, one clearly flattened from long nights spent studying rather than sleeping.

Books and printed materials lay scattered across the mattress and floor, evidence of the long hours he had poured into preparing for the exams. But the true centerpiece of the room was the window. It stretched nearly from the floor to the ceiling, a massive pane of reinforced glass that overlooked the university campus. From Orion's position on the bed the view almost felt surreal, as though the window itself were a gateway to another world. Beyond it lay the sprawling beauty of the academy grounds, illuminated by the soft golden glow of the afternoon sun.

Towering buildings rose in the distance, their modern architecture blending with older stone structures that carried the weight of history. Pathways wound through carefully maintained gardens where students could still be seen walking slowly, their conversations quiet and subdued as exam season pushed everyone toward the same exhausted finish line. Orion watched the scene for a moment before his attention shifted inward again.

Slowly he raised his right hand and placed his palm against the center of his chest.

He felt it immediately, beneath the steady rhythm of his heartbeat there was another presence, something faint yet undeniable pulsing quietly beneath the surface of his body. The sensation was subtle, not painful or alarming, but it carried a strange familiarity that was difficult to explain. It didn't feel like something new that had appeared suddenly in his life. Instead it felt older, like something that had always been there waiting beneath the surface for him to notice it. He closed his eyes and allowed his breathing to slow, the quiet pulse responded. It resonated faintly with his breath, with the steady rise and fall of his chest, almost as if it were connected to the rhythm of his very being. Each time he focused on it the sensation shifted slightly, not dramatically but enough to feel alive. It was like a quiet presence buried deep within him, something patient and aware.

The deeper he allowed his mind to drift toward it, the stronger the strange sensation became. It felt less like power and more like something attempting to communicate, as though the presence inside him wanted to show him something or guide him toward a realization he had not yet reached. Sometimes faint impressions surfaced in his thoughts, fragments of images that disappeared before he could fully grasp them.

The moment he tried to force the connection, the feeling retreated again, leaving only the faint pulse beneath his palm. Orion exhaled slowly and relaxed his hand slightly. Why me? The question lingered heavily in his thoughts. Was I chosen for something… or was I simply the one who survived? The memory of that night returned with unsettling clarity.

The meteor shower blazing across the sky, the fragment that had somehow fused with him, the terrifying encounter with the shadowed figure in the corridor. None of it made sense when placed together, yet the connection between them felt undeniable. Are there others? Even as the question formed he knew the answer. Of course there were. The world suddenly felt far larger than he had once believed, as if a hidden layer of reality had quietly revealed itself without warning.

Whatever had begun that night had not ended yet. If anything, it felt as though it had only just begun. Orion leaned back slightly and tried to calm his thoughts, reminding himself that he still had one final exam to complete before anything else could occupy his attention. Yet even as he attempted to focus on the practical concerns of the day, the quiet presence within him remained, steady and patient, like something waiting for the moment when he would finally understand what it had been trying to tell him all along. He closed his eyes again, allowing his consciousness to sink deeper into that strange internal space.

At first there was only darkness, but the sensation changed. The world around him seemed to dissolve, replaced by an endless emptiness that stretched far beyond anything he could comprehend. It was not darkness in the ordinary sense but a vast void where sound, movement, and even the sense of time seemed to disappear. Orion tried to move, but he felt no body to command. He tried to speak, yet no sound emerged. For a brief moment a quiet unease crept into his thoughts.

Before him appeared…

Light.

Not the gentle light of a lamp or the distant glow of a star, but a radiant brilliance that seemed to exist beyond the limits of ordinary understanding. It shone within the emptiness like the first spark of creation itself, overwhelming and beautiful in a way that made the surrounding void feel insignificant. From within that immense source of light, fragments began to emerge. They separated slowly at first, drifting outward before accelerating across the endless expanse of space like streaks of living energy. Orion watched in silent awe as the fragments scattered across unimaginable distances, each moving with purpose toward destinations he could not yet see. Before he could fully understand what he was witnessing, a powerful force pulled him forward.

The sensation was disorienting beyond anything he had ever experienced. It felt as though he were moving across impossible distances without truly traveling at all. Around him streaks of light flashed past, distant nebulae formed and dissolved, and strange cosmic structures appeared only to vanish moments later. Then the motion stopped. Ahead of him something enormous came into view. A planet, green and vibrant, its surface covered in vast oceans and continents, a world alive with potential.

Orion's focus remained fixed on the approaching fragment of light as it sped toward the planet at unimaginable speed. For a moment he believed it would collide with the surface. Instead it shattered. Countless smaller fragments scattered outward in every direction, each streaking toward different parts of the world as if guided by unseen intelligence. Time seemed to blur.

Then cracks appeared across the surface of the planet. At first they were thin lines spreading slowly across the continents, but within moments they widened dramatically, tearing through mountains and oceans alike. Energy burst outward from the fractures as massive portions of the planet broke apart, the entire world trembling like an egg about to split open. Orion felt a cold dread creeping into his thoughts.

From the depths beyond the broken world, something awakened, a massive face emerged from the darkness beyond the shattered world, so enormous that the dying planet seemed insignificant by comparison. Its eyes, immense and unreadable, scanned the planet with absolute attention, studying each fracture and fragment as though contemplating the minutest detail of its creation. Its expression was neutral, yet heavy with the weight of infinite authority.

Slowly, it opened its mouth, a gaping void, a darkness like the entrance to endless emptiness, a void that swallowed all light. The planet's shards were drawn toward it and consumed without mercy. Nothing could escape—fire, stone, light—only shadow. Even as it devoured nearly everything, a faint, defiant pulse lingered, something beyond its immediate reach.

It was only then that the entity became aware of another presence, something separate, something watching. Its attention snapped toward Orion, the void contracting around him, as though it sought not only to consume his body but his very essence.

Orion struggled, his chest tightening as if his heartbeat were insufficient. He tried everything to resist, but nothing worked. As he approached the yawning void, a voice unlike any other resonated in his mind, ethereal, ancient, and impossibly vast.

"Is that all?" it demanded, carrying the weight of aeons. Every instinct screamed for him to flee, yet he could not move. The voice continued.

"Of all my fragments, of all the countless beings that exist, you carry the fragment of brilliant light. Rise. Fight. Conquer. It is your birthright."

A surge of energy erupted from Orion's chest, radiating outward, filling every fiber of his being with warmth and power, as if the voice itself breathed life into him. His vision sharpened, his mind cleared, and he realized he now possessed a force he could channel. Instinctively, he hurled it toward the massive face.

The entity shrieked, a sound that tore through space. How is this mortal being trying to defy me? Its voice, incomprehensible and alien, twisted reality itself in retaliation. The guiding voice within Orion remained, patient and commanding.

"Harness the fragments. Gather your will. You are more than a spark. You are a storm contained."

Feeling strength flood him once more, Orion surged again, sending the energy cascading toward the face with overwhelming intensity. The entity shrieked and uttered a strange, incomprehensible word "Kalythar."

Cracks appeared first as faint fissures, jagged and unpredictable, then widened, fracturing the immense visage like shattered glass. The darkness tightened, attempting to consume him entirely, but the voice whispered again.

"You can win. You must endure. You are more than this moment."

The fissures deepened, the face trembled under his relentless assault. Shards of its form warped and splintered as Orion poured every ounce of his being into the strike. His body screamed from the strain, his mind teetered on the brink, yet the unseen voice guided him to the final blow.

With everything he had, he unleashed one last concentrated burst. The entity shrieked a crescendo of alien fury, a declaration that the abyss must prevail, yet the cracks exploded outward in blinding light. The massive face shattered, splintering like a mirror struck by impossible force.

Orion's strength emptied, his body collapsing as his vision blurred. Just as he felt himself slipping entirely, the voice resounded one last time.

"You are my frag—"

The words were torn away, unfinished, leaving only a lingering pulse in his chest.

With what little strength remained, Orion glimpsed a flash of light, a warmth unlike anything he had ever known. Through it, he saw the radiant face of a woman, glowing beyond description, before everything vanished.

Painfully, he collapsed forward onto his bed, sweat covering his body, his head pounding violently. He rolled onto his back, staring at the ceiling, struggling to understand what had just occurred.

Was it a dream? Or something else entirely?

His hand moved instinctively to his chest. The crystal pulsed beneath his palm, warmth spreading through him, easing the headache as exhaustion dissolved like mist beneath sunlight. A renewed strength coursed through him, comforting and unsettling all at once.

Orion slowly pushed himself upright and moved toward the chair beside his desk. His final exam was only hours away, yet his thoughts remained fixed on what he had seen.

Whatever resonance had awakened inside him, it was only just beginning.
