Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: The Queen Mother's Garden

The ball had ended, but the palace didn't sleep.

Zaria stepped away from the grand hall, her heels silent against the polished stone. The scent of flowers grew stronger as she entered the Queen Mother's garden—a sacred place no one dared intrude upon without invitation.

There, beneath a carved stone arch wrapped in moonlit vines, sat her mother.

Queen Mother Samira.

Even seated, her presence radiated calm authority. Dressed in layered silks of midnight blue and gold, with a staff carved from ancestral wood by her side, Samira seemed carved from the very spirit of Zambura.

"You wore the crown well tonight," her mother said without turning.

Zaria exhaled. "It was heavier than I expected."

Samira finally looked up. "It always is. You dance with a prince, the court watches your hands. You speak to a king, they listen for weakness. And when you smile, Zaria, they measure it—wondering what it means."

Zaria stepped forward and knelt by her.

"Do you trust him?" she asked.

"Rafael?" Samira hummed. "I trust that he came with purpose. The question is whether you know yours."

Zaria looked down at her reflection in the shallow pool beside them. "I don't want to lose myself. Not to politics, not to war. Not even to love."

Samira placed her hand gently on her daughter's head. "Then remember who you are, child. You are not just my daughter. You are Zaria—the flame the gods whispered into existence."

Zaria closed her eyes for a moment. "You raised me for this."

"I did," Samira said. "But I did not raise you to survive. I raised you to reign."

Zaria rose, shoulders straightened. "Then let them come. The kings, the lords, the gods. Let them all see."
