Chapter 31 - Chpt 30. The Scorched Heart of Fire

The air in the Land of Fire usually smelled of damp earth and blooming honeysuckle. Now, as Renza and Renju crossed the final ridge of the border, it smelled only of charcoal and ozone.

They weren't at the gates of Konoha. They were still three days' journey from the village, but the war had moved into the "Heartlands." The Kikyo Sector, a vital agricultural and trade hub, had been turned into a jagged front line. The Mist had pushed up the rivers, and the Cloud had secured the high ridges, creating a pincer that threatened to starve the Leaf into submission.

"The sensory perimeter is shredded," Renza noted, his eyes scanning the horizon. Plumes of black smoke rose from the forests—outposts that had been silenced. "They haven't reached the village, but they've occupied the arteries. If we don't clear the Kikyo Pass, Konoha won't have enough food to last the winter."

Renju adjusted the Summoning Scroll on his back. It felt heavier here, as if the land itself was crying out for the "Abyss" to settle the fires. "The Hokage's 'Denial' strategy failed. We didn't just need to deny them the bridge; we needed to deny them the land. Now, they're dug in like ticks."

"Then let's start pulling them out," Renza said, the teal sparks of his First Gate flickering in his grey eyes.

They reached a Konoha forward operating base nestled in the shadow of the Oryu Ridge. The camp was a vision of misery—wounded Chunin lining the paths, and the constant, frantic scurrying of exhausted Genin carrying supplies.

In the center of the camp stood a familiar figure. Minato Namikaze was hunched over a map, his blonde hair dulled by dust and sweat. Beside him stood Shibi Aburame, the bug-user's face hidden behind his high collar, his kikaichū beetles swarming in agitated clouds.

"Minato," Renju called out.

The future Hokage spun around, his kunai halfway to his hand before he realized who it was. His eyes widened, a look of profound relief washing over his tired face. "Renju? Renza? We thought... we thought the Oryu Crossing took you."

"Takes more than a river to kill a Calamity," Renza grinned, though he winced as he leaned on his staff.

"We heard about the Black Fortress," Minato said, stepping forward to clasp their shoulders. "And the rescue of the Academy students. You've become legends while you were 'dead.' But the situation here is dire. The Mist has occupied the Great Naka Canal, and the Cloud is holding the Iron Plate Ridge. We're trapped in the valley between them."

"We saw the pincer," Renju said, gesturing to the map. "You're trying to push them back with standard squads. It won't work. They have high-ground and water-superiority."

"What do you suggest?" Shibi asked, his voice a low drone.

Renju looked at the Sea Dragon Katana at his hip. "We split them. Renza takes the Ridge. I take the Canal. We create a vacuum in their communication, and you move the main force through the center while they're distracted by the 'Ghosts'."

Renza moved first. The Iron Plate Ridge was a vertical wall of stone held by the Cloud's elite Raijin Units. They had mounted heavy lightning-cannons at the peak, raining down destruction on any Leaf squad that tried to advance.

Renza didn't advance. He ascended.

"Eight Inner Gates: Gate of Healing... RELEASE!"

The teal aura exploded around him, not as a shield, but as a jet. He used his Wind Breathing to create a localized low-pressure zone in front of him, allowing him to sprint up the vertical cliff-face at speeds that defied gravity.

The Cloud sentries saw a blur of white hair and teal light. "Intercept! Target the runner!"

Lightning bolts rained down, but Renza didn't dodge—he vibrated. His Vibration Shunshin allowed the electricity to pass through the ionized air around his body without touching his skin.

He reached the summit in a heartbeat.

"Wind Breathing, Third Form: Constant... VACUUM GREAT SPHERE!"

Renza didn't launch it at the men. He launched it at the lightning-cannons. The spheres didn't just crush the machines; they sucked the lightning chakra out of the storage seals, causing a chain reaction of blue explosions that cleared the ridge in a single, thunderous roar.

"The Ridge is ours!" Renza's voice echoed through the valley, carried by the very wind he commanded.

While the Cloud was being decimated on the heights, Renju approached the Naka Canal. The Mist had built a series of floating fortresses on the water, using the current to power their defensive seals.

Renju stood on the bank, the water reflecting the dark blue of his eyes. He felt the Sea Dragon Katana pulse. The blade was hungry.

"You like the river, don't you?" Renju whispered to the sword.

He stepped onto the water. He didn't use the standard chakra-walk; he used Water Breathing to synchronize his weight with the surface tension. To the Mist scouts, it looked like a ghost was gliding across the canal.

"Intruder!" a Mist captain shouted. "Water Style: Water Dragon Bullet!"

Five massive dragons erupted from the canal, their jaws open to crush Renju.

Renju didn't flinch. He drew the Sea Dragon blade in a slow, deliberate motion. The blue steel hummed, and the water around his feet began to swirl in a counter-clockwise vortex.

"Sea Dragon Style: FIRST FORM—THE DRAGON'S WAKE!"

He swung the blade in a horizontal arc. He didn't create a water-bullet; he claimed the water the Mist had summoned. The five dragons didn't hit him; they merged into his blade, their chakra being absorbed into the "Ocean Steel."

Renju spun, redirecting the stolen mass into a singular, high-pressure blade of water that sliced through the first floating fortress like a hot wire through wax.

"Water Breathing, Seventh Form: Grasp of the Abyss!"

He slammed the hilt of the katana into the surface of the canal. The atmospheric pressure within the water tripled. The Mist shinobi on the remaining boats didn't fall overboard—they were sucked down as the water beneath them became as heavy as lead. Their vessels groaned and collapsed inward, the wood splintering under the sudden G-force.

In the center of the wreckage, Renju stood perfectly still. His hand was on the Summoning Scroll.

A second crack appeared in the wax seal. A faint, bioluminescent blue light leaked out, illuminating the blood-stained water.

"Denying the land to the invaders," the scroll whispered in his mind. "This is the second key."

With the Ridge cleared and the Canal neutralized, the "Iron Pincer" of the Mist and Cloud collapsed. Minato Namikaze saw the signal fires and led the main Konoha force in a devastating charge through the center.

The enemy, caught between the "Gale" on the mountain and the "Abyss" in the water, had no choice but to retreat. They fled back toward the borders, leaving behind their equipment and their dead.

As the sun set over the liberated Kikyo Sector, Renju and Renza met in the middle of the blood-slicked road. They were covered in soot and spray, their chakra coils singing with the familiar ache of the Gates, but they were standing.

Minato approached them, his yellow hair stained red by the sunset. He looked at the two fourteen-year-olds—two boys who should have been in the Academy, but were instead the pillars holding up the Hidden Leaf.

"They're retreating," Minato said, his voice soft. "You did it. You drove them out of the Heartlands."

"For now," Renju said, sheathing his blue blade. "But as long as the war lives, they'll keep coming back."

"Then we'll keep being the Calamity," Renza said, though he leaned heavily on Renju's shoulder.

Suddenly, a messenger bird landed on Minato's shoulder. He unrolled the small scroll, his face going pale.

"What is it?" Renju asked.

"The Hidden Stone," Minato whispered. "They've seen the Mist and Cloud fail. They're not sending an army anymore. They've deployed the Jinchūriki of the Five-Tails. He's heading for the Northern pass. He's coming to finish what the 'Twin Calamities' started."

Renju looked at his hand, then at the Summoning Scroll. Two keys were unlocked. He needed the third. And he had a feeling the Five-Tails was the only thing big enough to provide it.
