Kurana Alexanderia and Shogun Kurogami sat against the cold stone wall of a narrow cave, both of them looking more exhausted than they had in years. Dust and dried blood marked their clothes. The air inside the cave was dry and heavy, carrying the distant scent of sulfur.
Kurogami leaned his head back against the rock. "That thing… I've never seen anything that size."
Kurana stared at the cave entrance without answering at first. His voice came out rough. "Neither have I. And I've seen more than most people should."
Earlier, the two of them had pushed deeper into the easternmost plains than any previous expedition. What they found there had no place in any report. A giant volcano-like structure had risen out of the land as if it had always been there, yet nothing in the old maps showed it. The entire formation was black — black stone, black slopes, and thick black lava that moved slowly down its sides like living tar. The heat coming from it was wrong. It did not burn in the normal way. It pressed against the skin like a weight.
When they moved closer, they saw the creature.
The black dragon rested near the upper ridge of the volcano, its body coiled around a section of the dark stone. It was the largest living thing either of them had ever witnessed. Its scales absorbed light. Its wings, even half-folded, stretched farther than any building in the western capital. When its eyes opened and locked onto them, the pressure alone nearly forced them to their knees.
The dragon rose with a sound like mountains shifting. It became aggressive in an instant. Black flame gathered in its throat.
Kurana did not waste a second. "Move!"
They scrambled back onto the quadbike. Kurogami drove. The engine screamed as they tore across the cracked ground. A wave of black fire slammed into the earth behind them, melting stone into liquid. The heat chased them for hundreds of meters before the dragon finally stopped at the edge of its territory. It did not follow far from the volcano. That single fact was the only reason they were still alive.
Now, inside the cave, the two men sat in silence for a long time. Outside, the distant roars of other monsters occasionally rose and then cut off abruptly. The black dragon was hunting. It killed whatever came near the volcano and fed without hesitation. In a twisted way, its presence had cleared the immediate area of lesser threats, giving Kurana and Kurogami a narrow window of survival. But both of them knew the truth. If the dragon saw them again, there would be no second escape.
Kurana finally spoke. "We need a sample of that black lava."
Kurogami turned his head. "You're serious."
"I am. Whatever that substance is, it's not normal magma. If we can study it, we might understand what that creature really is… or what created this place."
Kurogami was quiet for a moment, then gave a short nod. "Then we go back. Fast in, fast out. No mistakes."
They waited until the distant sounds of the dragon's hunting moved farther along the ridge. Then they left the cave.
The return to the volcano was tense and silent. They kept the quadbike low and used the broken terrain for cover. When they reached a relatively stable flow of the black lava at the base of the structure, Kurana worked quickly. He pulled a reinforced container from his pack and carefully collected a thick sample of the dark liquid. The substance clung to the edges of the container like it was alive. Even through protective gloves, he could feel a strange cold pressure coming from it.
"Got it," Kurana said under his breath. "We're leaving."
Before they could move, a new presence entered the area.
A woman walked out of the haze near the lower slope of the volcano. Her figure was clear even at a distance. She wore dark, form-fitting armor that looked worn from long travel. She did not hide her approach. She walked straight toward the black structure as if she had come for it specifically.
The dragon noticed her almost immediately.
It rose from the upper ridge with a deep, resonant growl that shook the ground. Black flame already burned between its teeth. The woman did not run. She raised one hand, and a dense field of energy formed around her.
The fight began without warning.
The dragon released a wide stream of black fire. The woman moved sideways at high speed, the flames scorching the ground where she had stood. She responded with a concentrated blast of force that struck the dragon's lower jaw and snapped its head upward. For a moment it looked as if she had the advantage. She closed the distance, leaping onto one of the dragon's forelegs and driving a powerful strike into a gap between the black scales. The impact sent a visible shock through the creature's body.
Kurogami watched from cover, eyes narrowed. "She's strong."
Kurana did not look away. "Strong enough to push it back… for now."
The woman kept pressing. She moved along the dragon's body with sharp, efficient attacks, targeting joints and the thinner scales beneath the wings. Each strike carried heavy force. The dragon staggered once, then again. It swiped at her with a claw large enough to crush a vehicle. She narrowly avoided it and answered with a downward blow that cracked one of the scales on its shoulder.
For a short time, she was dominating the exchange.
Then the dragon adapted.
Its eyes locked onto her with clear focus. The black flame in its throat changed. It no longer released wide, wasteful waves. Instead, it gathered the fire into a dense, compressed sphere and released it at close range. The explosion of black energy caught the woman directly. The ground beneath her feet shattered. Her armor smoked. She was thrown across the slope and rolled hard before forcing herself back up.
The dragon did not give her time to recover. It closed the distance with terrifying speed for something so large. A second blast of black fire engulfed the area where she stood. This time the flames clung to her. Her protective energy flared desperately, but the black fire ate through it. The woman let out a sharp sound of pain as the heat seared across her side and shoulder. Her armor began to melt in places. The dragon had "cooked" her defenses in a single concentrated assault.
She still refused to fall.
Gritting her teeth, she gathered what power she had left and launched one final counter. A spear of condensed energy formed in her hands and pierced into the dragon's neck, drawing a roar of pure rage. Black blood — or something like it — sprayed across the dark stone. The dragon reeled, but its stamina did not drop. If anything, the injury only made it more aggressive.
The woman staggered. Her body was reaching its limit. Another wave of black flame forced her to retreat down the slope, her movements no longer as sharp as before.
Kurana made the decision instantly. "We're helping her. Now."
Kurogami already had the quadbike ready. They broke from cover and raced toward the woman's position. The dragon's attention was still fixed on her, giving them a narrow opening. Kurana reached out as they passed and pulled the injured woman onto the back of the vehicle. She was heavier than she looked, her body still radiating residual heat from the black fire.
"Hold on," Kurana ordered.
The woman did not waste breath arguing. She gripped the side of the bike as Kurogami turned it hard and accelerated away from the volcano. Behind them, the black dragon released one last stream of fire that scorched the ground only meters behind the vehicle. But true to its earlier behavior, it did not chase far beyond the boundary of the black structure. After a short distance, the great creature stopped, watched them for a long moment with burning eyes, and then slowly turned back toward its volcano.
Only when the black formation was far behind them did Kurogami slow the bike.
They returned to the cave in silence. Once inside, Kurana set the woman down against the wall and immediately checked her injuries. The black fire had left deep burns across her side and shoulder. Her armor was partially destroyed. Yet even in that state, her breathing remained controlled.
Kurogami stood near the entrance, watching the outside. "The sample is still intact."
Kurana nodded while pulling medical supplies from his pack. "Good. We'll need it."
The woman opened her eyes. Her voice was hoarse but steady. "You should have left me."
Kurana did not look up from her wounds. "We needed the sample. You needed to not die. Both problems are solved for now."
She studied the two of them for a moment, then closed her eyes again. Outside the cave, the distant presence of the black dragon remained like a constant pressure on the land. The easternmost plains had revealed something far older and far more dangerous than any of them had expected.
And the volcano was still there, waiting.
