Chapter 21 - Chapter 5- The Hidden Pressure

Jack blinked once, caught off guard. His eyebrows lifted in surprise.

For a brief moment, silence hung between them — filled only by the soft wind, distant birdsong, and the subtle hum of foxfire.

Then, a slow grin spread across his face. This was it.

He rolled his shoulders once, relaxed, energized — eyes sharpening with interest instead of fear.

"Trials, huh… good," he said with a light scoff of amusement. "I was getting bored already."

The confidence in his tone rang clean and effortless, cutting through the quiet like a spark in the mist.

"Oooohhh!" he burst out, bouncing once on his heels, tail fluffing wide with excitement. His eyes sparkled like polished gold. "He said the line — he said the hero line!"

He leaned toward Mizuri and whispered loudly — not quietly at all:

"He's really something else."

Mizuri allowed the faintest smile to touch her lips — small, controlled, but unmistakably approving.

The foxfire lamps brightened for a moment as another breeze passed through, swirling glowing sparks around the three of them like a silent omen of what was to come.

Mizuri's expression warmed just a fraction more.

"Rest today," she told Jack. "Observe. Breathe. Let your strength settle fully."

Jack nodded. No argument this time.

"…Yeah," he said softly. "I'd like that."

The courtyard settled into a gentle stillness after the announcement.

Sunlight streamed between the shrine roofs in long golden bands, dust motes and foxfire sparks drifting together like two worlds overlapping. The wind chimes sang softly overhead.

Mizuri gave Jack one last calm look — steady, reassuring — then turned gracefully. Her robes flowed behind her like a pale ribbon as she walked across the courtyard stones.

Each step was quiet, measured, almost soundless. The foxfire lamps along the path brightened subtly as she passed, as if acknowledging her presence.

Without hurry, without backward glance, she disappeared beneath the wooden archway leading deeper into the shrine grounds.

The moment she was out of sight —

Yukito exploded with energy.

"Yay! Trials..." he cheered, breaking into a playful run across the courtyard.

Yukito dashed along the stone path, then leapt onto the low edge of the koi pond, balancing perfectly for half a second before springing off again.

His tail streamed behind him like a banner, ears perked high, laughter echoing bright and wild.

He spun once mid-run, sliding across the polished wood walkway, then hopped onto a pillar base and struck a dramatic pose toward Jack.

"This is gonna be fun, man!" he declared, eyes shining. "You're gonna get tested, trained, tossed around, probably yelled at — it's the full hero package!"

Jack folded his arms, watching the chaos with a crooked smile.

"You seem way too happy about me getting tossed around," he said.

Yukito dropped from the pillar and jogged backward now, facing Jack, still grinning.

"Of course! I get front-row seats!"

A playful gust of wind rushed through the courtyard, swirling leaves and foxfire into a small spiral around Yukito as he ran through it, laughing. The shrine bells answered with a soft, ringing note.

Trails are coming.

The courtyard shimmered under the morning sun. Leaves drifted lazily from the tall shrine trees, spinning through shafts of light. Foxfire motes floated between pillars like glowing pollen.

The laughter slowly fades into the open air.

Yukito's footsteps begin to slow.

The courtyard settles again—wind carrying the last traces of foxfire through the sunlight.

Jack remains where he stands, arms still folded, watching him with quiet amusement.

Yukito comes to a stop.

A pause.

His expression shifts—just slightly.

"…Oh."

A small realization.

His ears twitch once.

He lifts a hand to the back of his neck, scratching lightly.

"…Right."

Jack raises an eyebrow.

"Now what?"

Yukito exhales through his nose, half-annoyed at himself.

"I have an important work to complete…"

A brief pause.

"…I kinda forgot."

Jack lets out a short, dry chuckle.

"Of course you did."

Yukito grins, unapologetic.

"Hey, I had important things to do."

He gestures vaguely—

"Like witnessing the birth of a hero."

A beat.

He rolls his shoulders once—then turns.

The energy changes.

Still light—but now there's direction beneath it.

"I'll catch you later," Yukito says, starting off.

He lifts a hand in a casual half-wave.

Then—

he moves.

Not rushing—

but no longer drifting either.

His pace carries intent now.

Footsteps fade along the stone path as he heads toward the inner shrine.

The courtyard settles behind him.

The morning sun lingers low, casting a warm golden hue across the shrine grounds.

A distant wooden wind chime echoes gently.

Footsteps.

Yukito walks along the stone path toward the inner shrine—

—but this time, there's a slight urgency beneath his relaxed posture.

Walking slightly bored…

…but his pace is a little quicker than before.

Not rushed—

just enough to show he's making up for lost time.

"Mm… sun's bright today…"

He squints slightly, glancing ahead.

A few shrine maidens pass in the distance, calm and focused.

The faint scent of incense drifts through the air.

Yukito exhales.

"…Shouldn't have delayed."

A quiet mutter.

He adjusts his pace just a little faster.

His gaze drifts upward—

sunlight flickering through leaves—

for just a second too long.

Inside the inner shrine grounds—

A shrine maiden walks along the turning path.

MIZUKI.

In her hands, a bundle of charms tied with red threads, along with folded cloth.

Her movements are graceful.

Precise.

Focused.

She pauses near a wooden pillar, adjusting a charm carefully.

A breeze brushes past her hair.

She resumes walking—

turning into the same path Yukito is approaching from.

Two paths.

One moment.

Neither notices.

Yukito moves forward—

pace steady—

eyes just returning from the sky—

Mizuki turns—

adjusting her grip—

A charm loosens—

she shifts—

And—

Thud.

The collision is sudden—but light.

The bundle slips.

Charms scatter across the stone floor.

Soft chimes echo.

Mizuki steps back—

balance faltering—

—but before she falls—

Yukito reacts instantly.

His hand catches her arm.

Firm.

Steady.

Natural instinct.

Silence.

The world slows.

Sunlight settles between them.

A loose strand of her hair sways gently.

Their eyes meet.

Just for a moment—

everything else fades.

Yukito blinks once—like snapping back.

He releases her arm smoothly.

"…Are you okay? Sorry—I wasn't looking."

Mizuki blinks, slightly startled with a cute blush.

"Ah… yes. I'm fine… no need to worry."

A small pause.

Then—

from the side—

a voice cuts in playfully.

"Heeey~ that looked a little too perfect!"

Miko leans out from behind a pillar, eyes sparkling.

She steps closer, hands behind her back, grin widening.

"You sure that wasn't on purpose?"

Yukito glances at her—

a brief pause—

then raises an eyebrow, calm but slightly amused.

"…You give me way too much credit."

Miko circles him slowly, inspecting.

"Catching her like that? Suspicious~"

Yukito exhales lightly.

Doesn't argue.

Just a faint smirk.

Mizuki kneels, gathering the fallen charms.

Her movements are calm.

Unhurried.

"It's alright… it was just an accident."

Her voice is soft.

Grounding.

Yukito watches her for a second—

then crouches down as well.

Without a word.

He picks up one charm.

Small.

Delicate.

Faint scent of incense.

He pauses briefly—

then extends it toward her.

Their hands almost meet.

A breath of distance.

A quiet pause.

Then—

she takes it.

Simple.

Natural.

Real.

Mizuki looks at him with a soft blush—

just a moment longer this time.

A soft smile forms.

"Thank you."

A gentle breeze flows through.

The charms sway.

Tiny bells chime.

Light shifts as the sun dips lower.

Then—

Yukito turns.

And walks away in hurry.

Footsteps fading along the stone path.

Miko leans closer to Mizuki, whispering with a grin:

"He's kinda interesting~"

Mizuki watches Yukito's back—

sunlight outlining his silhouette.

Her expression softens.

A quiet pause.

"…Yes."

The wind chime echoes again.

The courtyard has grown quieter.

The laughter from earlier is gone—

replaced by a soft, lingering stillness.

Wind drifts through the shrine… slower this time.

Measured.

Jack walks alone across the courtyard stones.

No rush.

No sound but his footsteps.

His hands rest loosely at his sides—but there's tension beneath the stillness.

Subtle.

Controlled.

He stops.

Right at the center of the courtyard.

The same place where everything felt light just moments ago.

Now—

it feels different.

A faint breeze passes.

The foxfire around him trembles.

Just slightly.

Jack's eyes lower.

His expression shifts.

The easy grin from before… gone.

Replaced by something quieter.

Sharper.

"…That was close."

His voice is low.

Barely above a whisper.

A pause.

His fingers twitch once.

Almost unnoticeable.

For a brief moment—

the air around him feels… heavy.

Like something unseen is pressing outward—

then—

it settles

Gone as quickly as it came.

Jack exhales slowly.

Measured.

Deliberate.

"How am I supposed to control it…"

He mutters to himself.

Not frustrated—

but focused.

Thinking.

He lifts his hand slightly—

staring at it.

As if expecting something.

As if remembering something.

A flicker of tension passes through his jaw.

Then—

he clenches his fist.

Tight.

"…and not let anyone notice."

The words fall quieter.

More serious.

His gaze sharpens.

That same confidence returns—

but now it feels different.

Not carefree.

Controlled.

Intentional.

"…I'll have to be more careful."

A beat.

The wind chime rings softly in the distance.

Clear.

Cold.

Jack turns.

Slowly.
