Chapter 8 - Building a Team

Rogan Steelheart was exactly where Kael expected to find him—at the same noodle shop where Thorn had died, loudly discussing his latest failed monster hunt.

"—and then the Stone-Fur Bear just sat on Chen! Boom! Flat as a pancake! I tried to help but the damn thing was three tons of angry fur and—oh, hey! It's the mysterious guy from Old Man's shop!"

Kael slid into the seat across from Rogan, ignoring the stares from other patrons. His reputation had spread—the "demon cultivator who killed Madam Lotus"—and most civilians gave him wide berth now.

"Rogan," Kael said by way of greeting.

"That's me! Rogan Steelheart, former Iron Mountain sect disciple, current professional monster hunter and occasional bodyguard!" He gestured to his bowl. "You want noodles? The pork here is amazing, though probably not as good as human blood or whatever demon cultivators eat."

[TARGET: ROGAN STEELHEART]

[LIFE POINTS: 3.2]

[CULTIVATION: BODY REFINEMENT STAGE 4 - 67%]

[TEMPERAMENT: LOYAL, IMPULSIVE, HONEST]

[RECRUITMENT PROBABILITY: 87% (HIGH COMPATIBILITY)]

"I eat normal food," Kael replied. "And I'm not technically a demon cultivator. Just a cultivator who uses demon path techniques."

"Is there a difference?"

"Legally, yes. Practically, not really." Kael ordered tea from the passing server. "I have a proposition for you."

Rogan's eyes lit up. "A job? Hell yes! My crew just dissolved after the bear incident and I'm down to my last twenty gold pieces. What needs killing?"

"Nothing immediately. I'm building a team to handle gang-level threats and territory management. I need someone with combat experience, loyalty, and enough strength to be useful without being so strong they'll challenge my authority."

"So basically you need a strong, loyal idiot to hit things?" Rogan grinned. "I'm perfect for that! When do I start?"

[RECRUITMENT SUCCESSFUL: ROGAN STEELHEART]

[COMPANION SLOT 1/3 FILLED]

[ROGAN STEELHEART LOYALTY: 65/100]

[BONUS TRAIT: HONEST - WILL NOT BETRAY, WILL SPEAK TRUTH EVEN WHEN UNCOMFORTABLE]

Kael blinked at how easy that was. "You're agreeing without knowing the pay, the specific duties, or the risks involved?"

"Sure! You seem competent, you killed a gang leader which is impressive, and honestly I'm tired of being broke and jobless." Rogan slurped his noodles enthusiastically. "Plus you've got this whole mysterious demon cultivator thing going on. That's way more interesting than hunting rabbits in the outer forest."

"The pay is fifty gold per month plus combat bonuses. The duties involve protecting my territory, eliminating threats, and occasionally dealing with situations I can't personally handle. The risks include fighting other cultivators, possibly dying in horrible ways, and being associated with someone the criminal underworld actively wants dead."

"Sold!" Rogan extended his massive hand. "When's the first job?"

Kael shook it, bemused. The system was right. Loyalty-based recruitment is significantly easier than transactional.

"First job is tomorrow. We're going to intimidate the Iron Talon gang into not retaliating for me killing their mercenary."

Rogan's grin widened. "Intimidating gangs! Now that's proper cultivator work!"

They spent the next hour discussing logistics. Rogan's combat style was pure frontal assault—Body Refinement Stage 4 strength focused on devastating physical attacks with minimal technique refinement. He was a hammer, useful for problems that required direct application of force.

Which, conveniently, was exactly what Kael needed for a companion. His own style was stealth, poison, tactical manipulation. Having someone who could handle straight combat freed him to focus on his strengths.

[TEAM SYNERGY DETECTED]

[ROGAN'S FRONTAL ASSAULT + KAEL'S TACTICAL SUPPORT = 40% COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS INCREASE]

As they parted ways—Rogan heading to collect his belongings from whatever flophouse he'd been staying in—Kael felt an unfamiliar sensation.

Not quite friendship. Not yet. But potential for it.

Is this what normal people feel? Connection? Trust?

[EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT DETECTED]

[CAPACITY FOR HUMAN BONDS: INCREASING]

[WARNING: MAY CONFLICT WITH OPTIMAL TACTICAL DECISIONS]

Great. The system is worried I'll become too human to kill efficiently.

Kael dismissed the notification and headed to his next recruitment target.

Sera Bloodlily found him first.

"I heard you recruited the loud idiot from the Iron Mountain sect," she said, appearing from the shadows of an alley. Her stealth technique was genuinely impressive—Kael's spiritual sense had barely detected her approach.

"Rogan, yes. He's loyal, strong, and follows orders. Useful qualities."

"He's also impulsive, reckless, and will probably get himself killed doing something stupid." Sera crossed her arms. "But I suppose beggars can't be choosers when building a team."

"Are you offering to join?"

"Maybe." She studied him with those calculating eyes. "Depends on the terms. I'm not abandoning the Shadow Lily sect completely, but I could... provide assistance on a contract basis."

[RECRUITMENT OPTION: SERA BLOODLILY]

[TYPE: CONTRACT ALLY (NOT FULL COMPANION)]

[LOYALTY: CONDITIONAL]

[BENEFITS: STEALTH SUPPORT, INTELLIGENCE GATHERING, ASSASSINATION CAPABILITY]

Kael considered. Full recruitment would be better, but Sera was too pragmatic to abandon her sect backing entirely. Contract work was acceptable as a starting point.

"Terms: You provide intelligence, stealth support, and assassination services when needed. I pay per job plus provide access to my cultivation resources and any techniques I acquire that suit your style."

"Generous," Sera noted. "What's the catch?"

"No catch. But I expect actual loyalty during operations. If you're going to betray me, do it before accepting the job, not during."

She laughed. "Fair enough. I can work with that." She extended her hand. "Contract accepted. First job?"

"Tomorrow. Intimidating the Iron Talon gang."

"Oh good. I was hoping for something violent." Her smile was predatory. "I'll bring my poison needles."

[CONTRACT ALLY ADDED: SERA BLOODLILY]

[COMPANION SLOT 2/3 FILLED (CONDITIONAL)]

[SERA BLOODLILY LOYALTY: 45/100 (PROFESSIONAL INTEREST)]

[ROMANTIC INTEREST: MODERATE (GROWING)]

They discussed specifics—the Iron Talon gang's leadership structure, their territory, their likely response to losing a Core Formation mercenary. Sera's intelligence was thorough, suggesting the Shadow Lily sect had been monitoring the situation closely.

"The Iron Talon boss is named Wei Iron-Hand," Sera explained. "Body Refinement Stage 5, specializes in metal-element techniques. He's got three lieutenants, all Stage 4, plus about fifty gang members of various cultivation levels."

"Stronger than the Crimson Lotus was," Kael noted.

"Significantly. Crimson Lotus relied on Madam Lotus's Qi Gathering cultivation to carry them. Iron Talon is built on a broader foundation of competent fighters." Sera pulled out a hand-drawn map. "Their main compound is here, eastern commercial district. Heavily fortified, always guards present."

"Direct assault would be costly even with Rogan's help."

"Agreed. Which is why I'm suggesting we hit their revenue streams instead. Force them to negotiate from a position of weakness."

Kael examined the map, noting the locations Sera had marked—protection racket collection points, drug trade distribution centers, illegal gambling dens. All profitable operations that funded the gang.

Destroy their income and they'll be forced to either negotiate or commit to total war. Either works for me.

"We'll start tomorrow night," Kael decided. "Simultaneous strikes on three locations. I'll take the northern gambling den with Rogan. You handle the southern drug distribution center. We coordinate timing to make it look like a larger force."

"Clever. Make them think you've got a small army instead of just three people." Sera approved. "I like it."

As she left—disappearing into shadows with practiced ease—Kael found himself thinking about the team he was building.

Rogan: the loyal warrior, strong and direct.

Sera: the calculating assassin, pragmatic and skilled.

And himself: the tactical commander, growing stronger through systematic murder.

This could actually work. If I don't get them all killed.

[QUEST PROGRESS: BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH 3+ COMPANIONS]

[PROGRESS: 2/3]

[TEAM SYNERGY: DEVELOPING]

[RECOMMENDATION: RECRUIT ONE MORE COMPANION FOR OPTIMAL BALANCE]

Who else would fit?

Kael mentally reviewed the cultivators he'd encountered. Most were either enemies, dead, or both. The few neutrals were either too weak to be useful or too strong to be controllable.

I'll find someone eventually. For now, focus on the Iron Talon situation.

He returned to his warehouse and spent the evening preparing. Explosive talismans, poison vials, throwing knives—all the tools of his trade. His cultivation had advanced to Stage 4 - 21%, making him genuinely dangerous by street standards.

But Wei Iron-Hand at Stage 5 would still have the advantage in direct combat.

Which is why I don't plan on fighting him directly. Not yet.

The next night, Kael and Rogan approached the northern gambling den.

It was a three-story building disguised as a textile shop, with the actual gambling operations hidden in the basement and upper floors. Six guards maintained watch, all Body Refinement Stage 2-3.

"Remember," Kael instructed Rogan as they approached. "We're making a statement, not starting a war. Disable the guards, destroy the operations, leave."

"Got it! Disable, destroy, leave!" Rogan cracked his knuckles enthusiastically. "Can I at least break some bones?"

"As many as necessary."

"Yes!"

They struck at exactly midnight.

Rogan went through the front door like a battering ram, his Stage 4 cultivation allowing him to simply overpower the door's defensive formations. The guards inside barely had time to react before he was among them.

"IRON TALON! Your protection ends tonight!" Rogan's voice boomed through the building. "Courtesy of the new management!"

Kael entered behind him, moving with Silent Shadow Movement to avoid detection. While Rogan drew attention—and several guard attacks—Kael systematically eliminated the actual threats.

Throat strike. Poison needle. Throwing knife.

Three guards down in as many seconds, their Life Points flowing into Kael's total.

[LIFE POINTS ABSORBED: +1.8]

[CURRENT TOTAL: 46.3/1]

Rogan handled the other three with enthusiastic violence, his fists pulping ribs and shattering jaws. The man was terrifyingly effective when properly unleashed.

Within two minutes, all six guards were either dead or unconscious.

"Basement or upstairs first?" Rogan asked cheerfully, not even winded.

"Basement. That's where the money is."

They descended into a surprisingly well-appointed gambling den—tables for various games, a bar stocked with expensive liquor, private rooms for high-stakes operations. Approximately thirty people were present, a mix of gamblers and staff.

All of them froze when Kael and Rogan entered.

"Everyone out," Kael announced calmly. "This establishment is closed. Permanently."

Most fled immediately. A few tried to grab their winnings. Rogan's warning shout—"MOVE OR GET MOVED!"—convinced the rest.

Once the building was empty, Kael set explosive talismans throughout the basement and first floor. Enough to demolish the structure but not collapse it into neighboring buildings.

They were two blocks away when the explosion lit up the night sky.

[IRON TALON OPERATION DESTROYED: NORTHERN GAMBLING DEN]

[ESTIMATED MONTHLY REVENUE LOSS: 150 GOLD]

Across the district, Sera would be hitting the southern drug distribution center with similar efficiency.

The message was clear: the Iron Talon gang's operations were no longer safe.

Wei Iron-Hand's response came the next morning.

A messenger arrived at Kael's warehouse—a young boy, maybe twelve, clearly terrified but doing his job.

"Message from Boss Wei," the kid squeaked. "He wants to meet. Neutral ground. Tomorrow at noon. Says he'll come alone if you do the same."

Kael studied the boy. No cultivation, no weapons, just a scared messenger doing what he was told.

"Tell Wei I accept. Location?"

"The old market square, center of the neutral zone."

"Agreed. Now go."

The kid fled.

[MEETING SCHEDULED: WEI IRON-HAND]

[ANALYSIS: 73% PROBABILITY OF AMBUSH]

[RECOMMENDATION: PREPARE COUNTERMEASURES OR DECLINE]

Of course it's probably an ambush. But I need to at least appear willing to negotiate.

Kael spent the rest of the day preparing. Not for negotiation, but for the likely combat.

He brought Rogan and Sera to the meeting despite Wei's "alone" condition. They positioned themselves in buildings surrounding the market square, ready to intervene if things went wrong.

Wei Iron-Hand arrived exactly at noon.

He was a stocky man with arms like tree trunks and a face carved from granite. His Stage 5 cultivation radiated power, and his hands were literally iron—a permanent body modification technique that made his strikes devastating.

He came alone, as promised. Which made Kael more suspicious, not less.

"You're the demon cultivator," Wei said without preamble. "The one who killed Madam Lotus and Yuan Blacksteel."

"I am."

"You destroyed two of my operations last night. Cost me approximately three hundred gold in monthly revenue."

"I did."

Wei studied him with professional assessment. "You're Body Refinement Stage 4. Talented for your age, but not exceptional. Yet you killed a Qi Gathering cultivator and a Core Formation mercenary. How?"

"Tactics, preparation, and a complete disregard for fighting honorably."

Wei laughed—sharp and bitter. "Honest. I can respect that." He crossed his arms. "Here's my offer: join the Iron Talon gang as my lieutenant. I'll pay you three hundred gold per month, give you autonomy over the former Crimson Lotus territory, and provide protection from any retaliation."

[RECRUITMENT OFFER: IRON TALON GANG LIEUTENANT]

[BENEFITS: SIGNIFICANT INCOME, SECT-LEVEL RESOURCES, PROTECTION]

[COSTS: SUBORDINATION, LOSS OF INDEPENDENCE, POTENTIAL MORAL CONFLICTS]

Kael considered. The offer was genuinely generous—Wei was trying to absorb a threat rather than eliminate it. Smart leadership.

But Kael had spent too much effort building his own power base to subordinate himself now.

"Decline," he said simply.

Wei's expression hardened. "Then we have a problem. You're operating in my territory, destroying my operations, and I can't let that stand."

"Your territory is debatable. The Crimson Lotus areas are mine by right of conquest. Destroying your operations was retaliation for you sending a Core Formation cultivator to kill me."

"Fair points. But this ends one of two ways—you join me, or I crush you."

Kael smiled, cold and humorless. "Option three: I kill you and absorb the Iron Talon gang like I did the Crimson Lotus."

Wei's cultivation flared, killing intent washing over the square. "Bold words from someone two stages below me."

"Not bold. Tactical." Kael's qi began circulating. "I've killed stronger opponents than you. Adding your Life Points to my collection would be... satisfying."

[WARNING: COMBAT IMMINENT]

[WEI IRON-HAND BACKUP FORCES DETECTED: 12 CULTIVATORS APPROACHING]

[AMBUSH CONFIRMED]

There it is.

"You brought friends," Kael noted. "So much for coming alone."

"You expected me to face a demon cultivator without backup? I'm ruthless, not stupid." Wei's iron hands began to glow with qi. "Last chance—join or die."

Kael triggered his prepared signal—a small qi flare that Rogan and Sera would recognize.

"Option four," he said. "I brought friends too."

Rogan burst from a building to the north, roaring a battle cry. Sera appeared from the south, poison needles already flying toward the approaching Iron Talon reinforcements.

Wei's eyes widened. "You—"

[AI COMBAT MODE - TURN-BASED: ACTIVATED]

Time crystallized.

Wei Iron-Hand, Stage 5, preparing a devastating Iron Fist technique. Twelve Iron Talon cultivators converging, average Stage 3. Rogan engaging three of them. Sera eliminating two with poison.

The system highlighted optimal strategy:

Eliminate Wei quickly before his reinforcements can support. His Iron Body modification makes him resistant to physical attacks, but qi disruption poison will bypass.

Kael's throwing knife—coated with his best qi-disruption poison—flew toward Wei's throat.

The gang leader's iron hand caught it mid-air. "Nice try—"

The poison absorbed through his skin anyway. His cultivation stuttered, protective qi flickering.

Now.

Kael closed distance with Phantom Movement, creating after-images that confused Wei's targeting. His blade—also poisoned—stabbed toward the gang leader's exposed neck.

Wei blocked with his forearm, the iron-modified limb deflecting the blade. But the poison was already spreading, his qi circulation deteriorating rapidly.

"What—what is this poison?" Wei gasped.

"Something expensive." Kael's follow-up strike, Demon Fist Second Form, caught Wei in the solar plexus. "Harvested from a Shadow Viper, specifically designed to disrupt metal-element techniques."

Wei's iron hands began to crack, his body modification failing as the poison spread. He tried to retreat, to call for help—

Sera's poison needle took him in the back of the neck.

The gang leader collapsed, his Stage 5 cultivation unable to overcome the combined poison assault.

[LIFE POINTS ABSORBED: +3.8]

[CURRENT TOTAL: 50.1/1]

The Iron Talon reinforcements, seeing their boss fall, hesitated. Rogan used the opportunity to pulp another one with his fists. Sera eliminated two more with precision needle work.

"RETREAT!" one of the smarter gang members shouted. "The boss is down! RETREAT!"

The remaining Iron Talon cultivators fled, abandoning their dead leader and wounded companions.

Kael stood over Wei's corpse, breathing hard but victorious.

[OPTIONAL QUEST COMPLETE: ELIMINATE IRON TALON LEADERSHIP]

[REWARD: TERRITORY CONTROL, 500 SYSTEM POINTS, SPECIAL TECHNIQUE]

[IRON TALON GANG ABSORBED]

[NEW TERRITORY: EASTERN COMMERCIAL DISTRICT]

[TOTAL MONTHLY INCOME: 700 GOLD]

Rogan approached, grinning despite being covered in blood. "Boss! We won! That was amazing!"

Sera appeared beside them, her needles already cleaned and sheathed. "Efficient. I'm impressed you actually killed a Stage 5 cultivator in open combat."

"Poison and teamwork," Kael replied. "Neither of which is particularly honorable, but both very effective."

[TEAM SYNERGY: EXCELLENT]

[ROGAN STEELHEART LOYALTY: 75/100 (+10 FROM SUCCESSFUL BATTLE)]

[SERA BLOODLILY LOYALTY: 55/100 (+10 FROM SUCCESSFUL BATTLE)]

[ROMANTIC INTEREST (SERA): SIGNIFICANT (IMPRESSED BY COMPETENCE)]

They looted Wei's body and secured the area before city guards arrived. As before, the guards seemed more relieved than concerned—another gang eliminated, another problem solved by the mysterious demon cultivator.

Back at the warehouse, Kael examined his new assets:

[LIFE POINTS: 50.1/1]

[SYSTEM POINTS: 1,400]

[CULTIVATION: BODY REFINEMENT STAGE 4 - 21%]

[TERRITORY: FORMER CRIMSON LOTUS + IRON TALON AREAS]

[MONTHLY INCOME: 700 GOLD]

[SUBORDINATES: 89]

He'd essentially become a crime lord, though one who was actively reforming the criminal operations toward legitimacy.

The question was what came next.

[MAJOR QUEST UNLOCKED: ESTABLISH LEGITIMATE POWER BASE]

[OBJECTIVES:]

[- ADVANCE TO QI GATHERING STAGE]

[- RECRUIT REMAINING COMPANION (1/3 NEEDED)]

[- ELIMINATE OR ABSORB REMAINING GANG THREATS]

[- FORM LEGITIMATE SECT OR ORGANIZATION]

[REWARD: SECT MASTER PRIVILEGES, ADVANCED TECHNIQUES, TERRITORY RECOGNITION]

Forming a sect. The system wants me to go legitimate.

It made sense tactically. Operating as a criminal, even a morally grey one, limited his growth potential. Sects had access to resources, protection under cultivation world laws, and paths to real power.

But it also meant politics, bureaucracy, and playing by someone else's rules.

Unless I make my own rules.

Kael smiled. The idea was ambitious bordering on insane—creating a new sect from scratch, built on demon path techniques and systematic efficiency.

But I've done more insane things this month.

He looked at Rogan and Sera, his first two companions. Both loyal in their own ways, both competent, both willing to follow his admittedly questionable leadership.

With a proper team, proper resources, and the system's support... maybe I can actually pull this off.

[QUEST ACCEPTED: ESTABLISH LEGITIMATE POWER BASE]

[TIME LIMIT: 6 MONTHS]

[FAILURE PENALTY: SYSTEM SUPPORT REDUCED, EXTERNAL THREATS INCREASED]

Six months to build a sect from nothing.

It should be impossible.

But Kael had the system, had Life Points, had companions, and had a complete willingness to do whatever was necessary to succeed.

Let's build something.
