Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – The First Heat

Aarav realized__"Peace was never quiet"

It was just… fragile.

Three weeks after the Enigma Hunt, the palace had settled into a tense rhythm. Patrols tightened.

Trade resumed.

The council argued less loudly—but more strategically.

And Aarav—

Aarav was not fine.

He knew something was wrong the moment he woke up sweating.

His body felt… off.

Too warm. Too sensitive. His pulse was uneven, his senses sharper than usual—the scent of incense in the room was overwhelming, the silk sheets irritating against his skin.

"Great," he muttered, sitting up. "Either I'm dying or your world has weird allergies."

He swung his legs off the bed—and nearly stumbled.

A knock sounded at the door.

"Aarav?" Kaelith's voice.

Aarav froze.

Even through the door, Kaelith's presence felt… stronger. Closer. Like it was pulling at something inside him.

That was new.

"…Yeah," Aarav called, trying to sound normal. "Come in."

Kaelith entered—and stopped.

His eyes darkened instantly.

"Aarav," he said slowly, "what are you feeling?"

Aarav leaned against the table. "Overheated. Irritated. Slightly homicidal. Why?"

Kaelith took a careful step forward. "Your scent—"

"I don't have a scent," Aarav snapped.

"You do now."

Silence.....

Aarav stared at him. "Explain...Clearly. And quickly."

Kaelith exhaled. "You are an Alpha. In this world, Alphas experience their first heat cycle after awakening fully to their aura."

Aarav blinked. "…You're telling me this is biological?"

"Yes."

"And you didn't think to warn me?"

"I did not expect it to happen this soon."

Aarav pressed his fingers to his temple. "Of course it's soon. My life doesn't believe in gradual development."

The heat surged again—sharper this time. His breath hitched slightly.

Kaelith noticed immediately.

"You need to stabilize," he said, voice tightening. "Uncontrolled Alpha heat can overwhelm your system."

Aarav forced a steady breath. "I've handled worse."

"This is not something you can outthink," Kaelith replied. "Your body will override you."

Aarav glared at him. "Watch me."

He took two steps—and his knees almost gave out.

Kaelith caught him instantly.

The contact sent a shock through Aarav's body—heat spiking, senses flooding.

"Okay," Aarav muttered against his shoulder, "that's… significantly worse."

Kaelith's grip tightened—but controlled. "We need to get you to the sanctuary."

"No," Aarav said immediately. "No dramatic rituals. No audience. No panic."

"There will be no audience," Kaelith said. "But you cannot remain here."

Aarav hesitated—then nodded. "Fine. But if anyone tries to 'manage' me like a problem, I'm leaving the kingdom."

Kaelith almost smiled. "Noted."

The sanctuary room pulsed softly as they entered.

The moment the doors closed, Aarav exhaled sharply, bracing himself against the crystal wall.

"This is insane," he muttered. "I've performed nine-hour surgeries without shaking. Why is this harder?"

"Because this is not external," Kaelith said quietly. "It is you."

Aarav laughed weakly. "That's… deeply unhelpful."

The heat surged again—stronger.

Aarav clenched his jaw. "Tell me exactly what happens. No vague mythology."

Kaelith stepped closer, but not too close.

"Your body seeks equilibrium," he explained. "An Alpha in heat releases excess energy. Without grounding, it becomes unstable."

"Grounding," Aarav repeated. "Define."

Kaelith hesitated.

Aarav narrowed his eyes. "Say it."

"…Physical and aura contact with a compatible partner," Kaelith said.

Aarav stared at him.

"You're telling me the solution is you."

"I am the safest option," Kaelith said carefully. "As an Enigma, I can absorb and stabilize your aura without harm."

Aarav dragged a hand through his hair. "This world is ridiculous."

The heat spiked again, sharper than before—his breath hitching, vision blurring slightly.

"Damn it—"

Kaelith stepped closer, voice softer now. "Aarav. Look at me."

Aarav forced his gaze up.

"Breathe," Kaelith said. "With me."

Aarav tried.

It helped—barely.

Kaelith extended his hand, stopping just short of touching him.

"I will not act without your permission," he said. "Tell me what you need."

That—more than anything—cut through the chaos.

Aarav steadied himself, focusing.

"Control," he said. "I need control. Not instinct taking over."

Kaelith nodded. "Then we do this your way."

He gently took Aarav's wrist—the marked one.

The moment their skin touched, the heat shifted.

Not gone—but contained.

Aarav exhaled sharply. "Okay… that's… better."

Kaelith adjusted his grip, careful, deliberate. "Focus on the connection. Not the heat."

Aarav closed his eyes.

For the first time since it started, his body didn't feel like it was fighting itself.

The warmth settled—still intense, but no longer overwhelming.

"You're stabilizing," Kaelith murmured.

Aarav opened one eye. "Congratulations. You're officially medical equipment."

Kaelith huffed softly. "I will accept that title."

Time passed—minutes, maybe hours.

The heat didn't vanish—but it became manageable.

Aarav leaned back against the wall, breathing more evenly now.

"…Okay," he said. "I'm not dying. That's a win."

Kaelith didn't let go immediately. "This will happen again."

Aarav grimaced. "Of course it will."

"But next time," Kaelith said, "you will be prepared."

Aarav glanced at their joined hands—then at Kaelith.

"Next time," he said quietly, "we don't treat it like a crisis."

Kaelith met his gaze. "Agreed."

Aarav exhaled, tension finally easing.

"Your world is exhausting," he muttered.

Kaelith's lips curved slightly. "And yet… you are still here."

Aarav smirked faintly. "Yeah. Don't make it sentimental."

But this time—

He didn't pull his hand away
