Evelyn
"Well, well, is that our king,"
I heard a cold and dangerous voice.
I turned toward the direction, a very handsome vampire stood with a proud grin on his face, like he owned the place. All the vampires here were so beautiful.
'Anyway, he was not as handsome as my Damian', Eva purred. I agreed, my Damian was the most magnificent.
Wait — my Damian? I cleared my throat.
The man came closer to us with a smirk tugged at his lips, his eyes turned red as they landed on me. Oh goddess, not again — but they turned black as soon as he spotted Damian's arms wrapped around my waist possessively.
"Greetings, King Damian." He bowed, but it felt like mockery to me.
"Cut the crap, Ronan," Damian said coldly and proudly, expressionless, just like the first time I saw him. I guess Damian knew this man's greeting was fake.
"It's a pleasure you came. I was not expecting you here, as you are a busy person," the man — Ronan — paused, his eyes flickering to me before he continued, "but still, it was my duty to invite you."
"Of course I had to come here. I want to talk to you about something."
Great. Just great. I knew it…this man came here for something else entirely, and on top of that he proudly admitted it. Then Damian pulled me closer and introduced me.
"She is Lady Evelyn.., my girlfriend."
My eyes widened and snapped toward him. I was shocked, he was introducing me as his girlfriend. I wanted to protest, but hearing those words, I felt electricity shoot through my body.
I didn't say anything, just enjoyed the feeling.
"Greetings, Lady Evelyn. Nice to meet you," Ronan said.
I smiled. "Likewise, Mr… umm—" damn, what was his last name?
"Sinclair," Ronan offered, slightly amused.
"Oh yes, Mr. Sinclair."
"Well, it is the first time in history a vampire has had a werewolf girlfriend," Ronan said, glancing at Damian.
But Damian said nothing, his expression completely blank. Damn, these two men were so dominating. I felt the testosterone heavy in the air and it was suffocating.
To lighten the mood, I forced a chuckle and said, "What has never happened before will eventually happen someday."
He shrugged.
"Is this your birthday?" I asked Ronan, since Damian was staying quiet. What was wrong with him? Oh goddess, this man — I was sure he had a personality disorder.
Ronan shook his head. "No, Lady Evelyn, it is not my birthday. I don't even remember when my birthday comes. I am 140 years old, I think — not confirmed," he said casually.
'He's ten years younger than Damian', Eva said. What was I supposed to do with that information?
"Then whose birthday is it?"
"My best friend's daughter," Ronan said.
I raised my brow. Then he said suddenly, "Ah, she's here." My eyes went toward the stairs, a very stunning young girl was walking down, wearing a beautiful gown.
I was shocked because the girl was human. The moment she reached the bottom, she went straight to Ronan, shyly.
Ronan's eyes softened. "You look gorgeous, Alessia," he said very softly. Alessia's blush deepened. Then Ronan introduced the girl and told us he was her guardian.
Damian didn't say anything — arrogant jerk, but I smiled warmly.
"Hello, Alessia. Nice to meet you, and happy birthday!"
Goddess, I felt embarrassed. I wished I had brought something to gift her.
I hadn't even thought about that. The girl was shy, but she suddenly hugged me. I hugged her back.
"Thank you, ma'am," she said.
"Call me Evelyn."
"Let's cut the cake, Alessia," Ronan said, and she smiled.
Ronan ordered someone to bring the cake. The big cake arrived at the center of the room.
My eyes went to Damian..he looked bored. I hissed at him, "What are you doing, Damian?"
"What did I do, little wolf?" he said, like he had no idea.
"Can't you behave?" He still looked at me, confused. I sighed. "Just act normal. You're behaving like you're the king."
He chuckled lightly, low enough that only I could hear. "I am," he said arrogantly. Well, he was right though.
Alessia cut the cake and fed Ronan a piece. Everyone clapped. I didn't think any vampire was particularly happy to be at a birthday party — especially a human one — but they came because of Ronan.
"Let's talk," Damian said to Ronan. More like ordering him.
Ronan nodded, then glanced at Alessia, placed his hand on her shoulder and told her he'd be right back.
The look in her eyes was enough, she didn't want him to go. Interesting. He was her guardian, her father's friend, but something about them felt like something else entirely.
Eva chuckled. 'I'm smelling something forbidden between them. Like crushing on my father's best friend type story', she commented.
I was amused. Damn, Eva.. I won't read those forbidden romance stories anymore. Eva always got stupid ideas from those books. Once she had cast Damian as my teacher and me as his student, making our whole relationship sound like some scandalous fiction.
"Stay here, little wolf. I'll only be a few minutes," Damian said, then kissed my cheek. I blushed — didn't he know we were in a public place?
"Jacob, stay with Lady Evelyn. Guard her with your life."
Jacob looked horrified, like he wanted anywhere but with me, he quickly schooled his expression and bowed.
I rolled my eyes. Guard me, like I was a child. Then Damian walked out with Ronan.
I noticed Alessia still staring at Ronan's back.
"Let's sit here, Alessia." She smiled and we settled onto the sofa tucked in the corner. Jacob followed but kept his distance.
"So, how old are you, Alessia?"
"Today I turned twenty."
"Oh, you're so young." I paused. "Ronan is your guardian — do you know what he is?" I asked. I had a feeling she already knew.
She nodded. "Yes, I know he's a vampire. Are you one too?" she asked hesitantly.
"No, I'm a werewolf."
Her eyes went wide. "I can't believe it. The creatures I saw on TV are actually real."
I laughed. "Yes, many creatures are real."
"Are you not scared of Ronan?"
"I could never be scared of him. I'm actually safest with him." A sad smile appeared on her face. "This is the first birthday I've celebrated in years, and it's only because of him." Her eyes filled with tears.
"Where are your parents?" I asked her.
Her tears slid down her cheeks. "They died in an accident when I was nine. I was living with my uncle and aunt after that — they made my life hell. If Ronan hadn't helped me, I probably would have died." She finished, tears still on her cheeks.
Oh goddess. I pulled her into a hug, trying to comfort her. "I'm so sorry, dear."
She waved her hand. "I'm fine now, Evelyn. I'm safe and happy.. because of him." She said it softly, and then blushed.
So my suspicion was right. Ronan wasn't just a guardian to her. He meant something far more than that.
We talked for a few more minutes. Damian still hadn't come back. What was he talking about for so long?
This man was a mystery to me, always hiding something.
