Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Currency of Survival

Forty-seventh.

The number followed Jarine through his fields, a persistent whisper in the Life-Web's hum. It was validation, yes. It was also a vulnerability threshold. At #47, he was no longer beneath notice. He was now a curiosity, a potential asset, a problem to be solved or acquired.

The Academy's Show of Force was seventy-three days away. He had no walls, no standing army, no battle mages. He had soil, roots, and a vein of pale fire beneath his feet.

He opened the System Shop.

The interface bloomed in his vision, its categories now familiar, its depths still infinite. His Credit balance glowed: 2,847 SC. The accumulated harvest of two years of survival—monster parts salvaged, quests completed, efficiency honed to a razor's edge. It was a fortune by frontier standards. It was also utterly inadequate for what he needed to build.

He navigated past the Tier 1 basics, past the Tier 2 improvements. His finger hovered over the Defensive Infrastructure section.

[Palisade Core - Tier 2]

Description: A enchanted foundation stone. When planted and supplied with mana, generates 50 meters of living, regenerating wooden wall. Height: 4 meters. Thickness: 0.5 meters. Durability: High.

Integration: Compatible with Life-Web. Can be upgraded.

Cost: 800 SC per core.

Recommendation: Purchase 4 units for complete perimeter enclosure.

[Sentry Grove Obelisk - Tier 2]

Description: A crystalline monolith. When activated, grants limited sentience to all trees within 100 meters. Bound flora gain basic threat assessment and can manipulate branches to impede, entangle, or strike.

Integration: Requires established tree cover. Compatible with Life-Web.

Cost: 1,200 SC per obelisk.

Recommendation: Purchase 2 units for overlapping coverage.

[Verdant Artillery Pod - Tier 2]

Description: A bio-organic siege weapon. Grows from specially prepared seed. When mature, launches high-velocity, armor-piercing seed pods at designated targets. Range: 200 meters. Rate of fire: 3 rounds/minute.

Integration: Requires dedicated nutrient supply. Compatible with Life-Web targeting.

Cost: 600 SC per pod.

Recommendation: Purchase 4-6 units for defensive coverage.

[Aetherium Conversion Catalyst - Tier 3 - RARE]

Description: An alchemical matrix that refines raw Aetherium into pure, mana-reactive alloy at 4x standard efficiency. Required for advanced crafting.

Integration: Requires workshop space, basic alchemical tools.

Cost: 2,500 SC.

Note: One-time purchase. Permanent benefit.

Jarine stared at the Catalyst. It was most of his savings. It did nothing to directly defend his territory. But with it, each Aetherium nodule he harvested would become four times more valuable, four times more useful. The vein beneath the Eastern Slopes held perhaps fifty ingots' worth of raw ore. With the Catalyst, that became two hundred ingots' worth of refined, combat-grade alloy.

Defense was not just walls and weapons. Defense was capacity. The ability to produce more, build faster, adapt quicker than whatever the Academy threw at him.

He purchased the Aetherium Conversion Catalyst.

[-2,500 SC]

[Remaining Balance: 347 SC]

[Item transferred to inventory. Recommended installation: Secure, climate-controlled workspace.]

The Catalyst manifested in a swirl of blue light: a foot-wide disc of interlocking crystal rings, each inscribed with flowing, pre-Cataclysm script. It hummed with contained potential, its core a void that seemed to drink the light. Jarine carried it to his workshop, to the reinforced table beneath the tower's foundation. He placed it at the center, then fed it his first offering: three raw Aetherium nodules, each the size of his thumb.

The Catalyst awakened. The crystal rings spun, their script flaring with pale, green-white fire. The nodules began to glow, to soften, to flow. Impurities separated, rising as dark smoke. The pure Aetherium coalesced into a single, shimmering ingot, perfectly formed, its surface alive with internal light.

[Refinement Complete.]

[3 Raw Nodules → 1 Refined Aetherium Ingot.]

[Value: 1,200 SC (×4 raw equivalent).]

One ingot. Enough to enhance a dozen tools, or forge a single, exceptional weapon, or trade for critical supplies. And the vein still held forty more nodules, waiting.

He set the ingot aside and returned to the Shop. 347 SC was not enough for a Palisade Core or a Sentry Grove. But it was enough for something else—something smaller, more targeted, more suited to his particular method of warfare.

He scrolled to the Pest Control subsection, then navigated deeper, to the category labeled Biological Countermeasures.

[Void-Wasp Nest (Colony Starter) - Tier 2]

Description: A dormant queen and twenty workers. Void-Wasps are extra-dimensional predators that feed on ambient mana and the life-force of magical creatures. They do not attack non-magical beings unless provoked. Their venom induces temporary mana-sickness, rendering spellcasters and enchanted creatures incapable of sustained magical activity.

Integration: Requires established territory bond. Wasps will recognize bonded domain and defend it as their own. Warning: Difficult to control. Aggressive reproductive cycle.

Cost: 300 SC.

[Corpse-Bloom Seed Cluster - Tier 2]

Description: A carnivorous plant that mimics the scent of injured prey. Attracts and consumes small-to-medium predators. Root system produces potent paralytic that spreads through soil contact. Effective area: 15-meter radius per cluster.

Integration: Compatible with Life-Web. Requires regular feeding.

Cost: 280 SC.

[Shade-Weaver Cocoon - Tier 2]

Description: A larval extra-dimensional arachnid. When matured, weaves nearly invisible webs that absorb light and sound. Creatures caught in webs are subject to progressive mana-drain. Webs are highly flammable.

Integration: Requires vertical surfaces. Can be directed via Life-Web.

Cost: 320 SC.

He chose the Void-Wasps.

It was a risk. The description's warnings were explicit: difficult to control, aggressive reproductive cycle. But Jarine understood ecosystems. Every predator had a niche, and every niche could be managed if you understood its boundaries. The Wasps fed on magical creatures. The Blackwood Vale was full of magical creatures. And the Academy's Show of Force would undoubtedly feature something large, powerful, and saturated with combat mana.

He purchased the colony starter.

[ -300 SC ]

[Remaining Balance: 47 SC]

The nest materialized in a containment sphere of smoked glass: a fist-sized, organic mass of iridescent black chitin, pulsing with slow, rhythmic contractions. Twenty workers clung to its surface, their bodies slender, their wings folded like razor-edged silk. They were beautiful in the way of all efficient predators—streamlined, purposeful, utterly alien.

Jarine carried the sphere to the Eastern Slopes, to a sheltered overhang near the Aetherium vein's hidden entrance. The Wasps, he sensed through the containment field, were aware of him. Not hostile, but watchful. Assessing.

He broke the seal.

The queen's antennae twitched. The workers stirred, unfolded their wings, and took flight in a silent, synchronized spiral. They orbited Jarine once, twice—a reconnaissance, a judgment—then dispersed into the crevices of the slope, their chitin blending perfectly with the shadowed rock.

[Void-Wasp Colony Bonded.]

Status: Acclimating. Queen is evaluating territory suitability.

Warning: Colony satisfaction is variable. Ensure adequate magical prey population. Failure to provide sufficient sustenance may result in colony migration or aggression toward bonded entities.

Jine placed his hand on the rock face, extending his awareness through the Life-Web. The Wasps were there, at the very edge of his perception—a new, alien frequency in the symphony of his domain. They were not integrated like his Thornroots or his beetles. They were allies, not organs. They had their own will, their own hunger.

But they were his. For now.

---

The remaining 47 SC bought him nothing of strategic value. He spent it on Iron-Bark Acorns (4 Credits each) —eleven seeds, which he planted in a dense ring around the Eastern Slopes' base. They would take years to mature into true trees, but their initial growth was rapid. Within a month, they would be waist-high saplings. Within three, they would be tall enough to weave into a secondary defensive perimeter.

The Show of Force was seventy-one days away.

---

That night, Jarine sat in his workshop, the Aetherium Conversion Catalyst humming softly, one refined ingot glowing on his workbench, forty more nodules waiting in the hidden chamber. The Void-Wasp queen pulsed in his peripheral awareness, her colony already beginning to expand. The World-Sense Lotus sprout had grown a third leaf, its roots now a dense network wrapped around its Aetherium shard.

He was not building a fortress. He was building an ecosystem of war.

The Academy expected walls and weapons, soldiers and siege engines. They would find none of those things. They would find soil that remembered, roots that reached, and wasps that drank the magic from living flesh. They would find a Farmer who did not fight, but cultivated—and whose harvest, this season, would be measured not in bushels, but in the broken bodies of whatever they sent to destroy him.

Seventy-one days.

He picked up the refined Aetherium ingot, feeling its weight, its warmth, its terrible potential. Then he began to forge.
