Chapter 56 - The Betrayal Within

The boardroom smelled like polished wood and fear.

Ethan walked in knowing he was outnumbered.

But he didn't expect to be outplayed.

Twelve directors sat around the long glass table. Faces he had trusted. Men and women who toasted his leadership at galas. Who praised his "vision."

Now they avoided his eyes.

Margaret was not physically present.

She didn't need to be.

Her influence filled the room like smoke.

The lead director cleared his throat.

"Given recent instability and market decline, we are holding a vote to determine temporary leadership adjustment."

"Adjustment?" Ethan repeated coldly. "Call it what it is."

No one answered.

A digital screen lit up.

Vote in progress.

Ethan scanned the room. His allies. Or so he thought.

Thomas Reed — abstained.

Clara Mendez — against him.

Richard Lowe — switched sides.

His jaw tightened.

"You're reacting to panic headlines," Ethan said evenly. "The investigation will clear this company."

Richard finally met his eyes.

"We're reacting to risk."

Risk.

That word.

It always meant money.

Never morality.

The votes finished tallying.

Majority decision:

CEO Ethan Kingsley – Suspended pending investigation.

For a moment, the world went silent.

Then the director continued:

"Margaret Kingsley will resume interim control."

It wasn't about protecting shareholders.

It was about protecting themselves.

Ethan stood slowly.

"You're giving control back to the very person under investigation."

Thomas avoided his gaze. "We're protecting stability."

"You're protecting your bonuses."

The room stiffened.

But no one denied it.

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

"You just chose survival over truth."

He walked out without looking back.

Aria watched the announcement on live television.

"Effective immediately…"

Her chest tightened.

This was her fault.

If she hadn't pushed him to expose everything…

He would still be CEO.

Her phone rang.

Ethan.

She answered immediately.

"They suspended me," he said quietly.

"I'm so sorry."

Silence.

Then something changed in his voice.

It wasn't anger.

It wasn't grief.

It was clarity.

"I've been protecting the company," he said slowly. "Protecting the board. Protecting the brand."

"And now?"

"Now I protect nothing."

The shift was dangerous.

"They think removing my title weakens me," he continued. "But they just removed my leash."

Aria felt a chill.

"What are you going to do?"

His answer was calm.

"I'm going to finish this."

Later that night, there was a knock at Aria's door.

A man in his early fifties stood nervously in the hallway.

"I worked in Kingsley's offshore accounts department," he whispered. "I saw your press conference."

Her pulse spiked.

"I kept copies," he said. "Encrypted. Hidden. I knew one day I might need insurance."

Insurance.

He handed her a small envelope.

"My name is Daniel Cross. If something happens to me, release everything."

Aria felt the weight of it in her hand.

This wasn't just exposure anymore.

This was war with casualties.

Was the board wrong to suspend Ethan?

Comment WRONG or NECESSARY
