Chapter 75 - The Betrayer’s Mistake

Harrison Cole believed he had already won.

From the corner office on the thirty-second floor of Kingston Holdings, the city stretched beneath him like a kingdom waiting to be claimed. Glass walls reflected the late afternoon sun, turning the room gold the color of power, the color of victory.

He stood with a glass of aged whiskey in his hand, watching traffic crawl along the avenue below.

Aria was in prison.

Ethan was distracted.

The board was frightened.

And frightened people were easy to control.

For years Harrison had watched Ethan Kingston dominate the corporate world with a mix of ruthless intelligence and inherited authority. The board adored him, investors trusted him, and the press treated him like a visionary.

But Harrison knew something the others didn't.

Kings can be removed.

You just have to strike when the kingdom is unstable.

And right now, Kingston Holdings was bleeding.

Stock prices had dropped twelve percent in two days.

Investors were nervous.

Rumors were spreading.

Exactly as planned.

Harrison set his glass down and leaned against the desk, allowing himself a rare smile.

Everything had unfolded perfectly.

Framing Aria had been the smartest move he'd ever made.

The public loved a scandal involving romance and power. It distracted them from the deeper numbers, the hidden transfers, the offshore accounts he had been quietly building for years.

By the time anyone discovered the truth, the company's structure would already be reorganized.

And Harrison would be the one holding the reins.

He checked his watch.

6:42 p.m.

Right on schedule.

The elevator outside the executive hallway chimed.

Footsteps followed.

His assistant entered the office, looking slightly uneasy.

"Mr. Cole," she said carefully. "There are some federal agents downstairs asking for access to company records."

Harrison didn't react immediately.

He simply lifted his glass again and took a slow sip.

"Routine," he said calmly. "Whenever there's a public investigation tied to a company executive, the regulators make a show of involvement."

"But they asked specifically for financial archives."

That made him pause.

Not long.

Just enough to calculate.

Still, Harrison waved a dismissive hand.

"Let them review whatever they want. Our internal compliance reports are spotless."

The assistant nodded uncertainly and left.

Harrison turned back toward the window.

The key to surviving investigations wasn't panic.

It was confidence.

People who panicked looked guilty.

People who welcomed scrutiny appeared innocent.

He had survived three audits already.

This would be no different.

Across the city, inside a concrete detention facility, Aria sat cross-legged on the narrow bed in her cell.

A thin blanket rested around her shoulders, but she barely noticed the cold.

Her attention was locked on the small notebook resting in her lap.

Every detail mattered.

Every number.

Every name.

Selena sat across from her on the floor, leaning against the metal bunk frame.

"You're very calm for someone facing federal charges," Selena observed.

Aria didn't look up.

"I'm calm because the charges won't last."

"You're confident."

"I'm prepared."

Selena studied her carefully.

"You expected something like this to happen."

Aria finally looked up.

"I didn't expect it," she said quietly.

"But I prepared for it."

She closed the notebook and slid it under the thin mattress.

"What Harrison doesn't understand," Aria continued, "is that people who grow up without power learn to protect themselves differently."

Selena raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

Aria smiled faintly.

"We keep receipts."

Back in the Kingston Holdings tower, the atmosphere had shifted.

The presence of federal investigators had spread through the building like electricity.

Employees whispered in hallways.

Managers avoided eye contact.

The compliance department was in chaos.

Harrison watched it all from his office with growing irritation.

This wasn't part of the plan.

Investigations were supposed to move slowly.

Weeks.

Months.

Not hours.

His phone buzzed.

A message from the company's legal team.

URGENT: Agents requesting access to archived financial backups.

Harrison's stomach tightened.

Archived backups?

That wasn't routine.

That meant someone had directed them to specific records.

Which meant someone had talked.

He opened his laptop quickly, accessing the secure internal database where his hidden transfers were routed through layered shell accounts.

The screen loaded.

And for the first time in years—

Harrison felt a flicker of unease.

One of the offshore accounts had been flagged.

Not by regulators.

By internal tracking.

Someone had accessed the archive server two nights ago.

The night before Aria's arrest.

His pulse quickened.

That wasn't possible.

The archive servers required executive clearance.

Only three people had that access.

Him.

Ethan.

And—

His breath stopped.

Aria.

Inside her cell, Aria leaned back against the wall, staring at the ceiling.

The fluorescent light flickered softly above her.

Selena watched her with curiosity.

"You're smiling," she said.

Aria didn't deny it.

"Because Harrison made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

Aria turned her head slowly.

"He thought I was the weakest piece on the board."

Selena leaned forward.

"And you're not?"

Aria's voice was calm.

"No."

Across the city, agents were copying financial drives.

Server logs were being extracted.

Encrypted accounts were being flagged.

The dominoes had already started falling.

And Harrison Cole still believed he was in control.

But Aria knew something he didn't.

She had accessed the backup server before her arrest.

She had copied every transaction Harrison had hidden.

Every offshore account.

Every illegal transfer.

And she had scheduled one final automated action.

If she remained in custody longer than seventy-two hours—

Those files would be sent directly to federal investigators.

Aria closed her eyes and whispered softly to herself:

"Checkmate."

If you were Aria, would you reveal the evidence immediately or wait until Harrison feels completely safe before destroying him?
