Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: First Shift

[No-Ah]

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

No-Ah lay on her back, staring at the ceiling like it personally offended her.

A few seconds passed.

Then a few more.

"…annoying."

She sat up.

That was it.

☆☆☆

The sign wasn't even that noticeable.

Small.

Slightly crooked.

Now Hiring.

No-Ah slowed.

Stopped.

Looked at it.

"…sure."

☆☆☆

The bell chimed softly as she stepped in.

Warm air.

Faint coffee.

Quiet, but not empty.

Her eyes moved once—

tables, counter, exits—

then settled.

Normal.

"…we're hiring," someone said.

"I saw."

A pause.

"Any experience?"

"…no."

"…you'll learn fast?"

"I will."

Another pause.

"…you can start today."

"…okay."

Just like that.

☆☆☆

"Apron's over there."

No-Ah tied it without asking how.

"Menu's simple. You'll memorize it."

She nodded once.

"Don't pick fights with customers."

"…they'll have to start it."

A look.

"…don't."

"…fine."

☆☆☆

"Min-Ji."

No-Ah glanced up.

A man stood near the counter.

Same uniform.

Apron tied neatly.

Hair pulled back in a small bun.

Clean.

Put together.

"Show her around," the manager said.

"Okay!"

He stepped closer.

"So... No-Ah."

"…yeah."

A pause.

Min-Ji's eyes rested on her for a second longer than necessary.

Not obvious.

But not quick either.

"this way, please."

No-Ah followed.

☆☆☆

"Orders go here."

A light tap on the counter.

"Drinks there."

Another.

"Don't mix them up."

"…I won't."

"You sure?"

No-Ah glanced at him.

"…yes...?"

He met her gaze.

Calm.

"…you don't look like you make careless mistakes."

A beat.

No-Ah looked at him for a second.

"…you don't know me."

"Ouch. Cold."

Silence.

Then—

No-Ah turned.

"Your shift starts tomorrow."

☆☆☆

The shift wasn't busy.

A few customers.

Low noise.

Easy pace.

No-Ah moved without hesitation.

Picked things up quickly.

Didn't ask unnecessary questions.

Didn't make unnecessary conversation.

"…table three."

She grabbed the drink.

Walked over.

Set it down.

"Americano."

"…thanks."

She turned.

Simple.

Done.

☆☆☆

Back at the counter—

Min-Ji was watching her.

Not directly.

Not obviously.

But—

watching.

"…what?" No-Ah said.

He didn't react immediately.

Then—

"…nothing."

A pause.

"…you're adjusting fast."

"Is that a problem?"

"…no."

Silence.

"…it's good."

No-Ah clicked her tongue softly.

Turned away.

☆☆☆

Later—

"Break."

"…okay."

No-Ah stepped outside, the bell chiming behind her.

Cooler air.

Quieter.

Better.

She leaned lightly against the wall, arms crossed.

A small exhale left her.

"…not bad." A low velvety voice said.

The door opened again.

She didn't turn.

Didn't want to.

Footsteps stopped beside her.

Not too close.

Not far.

"…first day."

It was girl's voice.

"…yeah."

"…you're not tired."

"…should I be?"

"…most people are."

"Most people are slow."

A pause.

Then—

"…maybe."

No-Ah glanced at her.

She wasn't looking at her.

Just ahead.

But—

Something about her... felt

aware.

"…you've worked here long?" No-Ah asked.

"…long enough."

"Mm."

Silence.

Not awkward.

Not comfortable.

Just—

there.

"…you're quiet," She said.

"…so are you."

A small pause.

Then—

"What's your name?"

"...Ji Run-Seo."

"pretty."

No-Ah pushed off the wall.

"Break's over."

"…yeah."

They walked back in.

Side by side.

Not together.

Not separate.

Just—

aligned.

☆☆☆

The bell chimed softly behind them.

The café didn't change.

Same space.

Same quiet.

Same routine.

But—

something settled into place.

Subtle.

Unspoken.

Not visible.

Not yet.

Run-Seo tied her apron slightly tighter.

No-Ah didn't notice.

Or maybe—

she just didn't care.
