Chapter 18 - Not An Accident

Chapter Eighteen: Not An Accident

The doors did not open.

They were forced inward…

A blast of unseen power struck them from the outside and both massive panels flew inward, slamming against the stone walls with a sound that shook the chamber.

Every member of the High Court turned at once.

Kaelreth walked in.

He did not touch the doors and he looked furious…

The air around him felt charged, like a storm that had already decided to strike.

He moved straight to the throne at the head of the chamber and sat down without asking for acknowledgment.

Silence followed him.

The air felt Heavy and everyone was Watching.

"I will say this once," he said, voice low but carrying through every corner of the hall. "What happened in the library was not an accident."

No one spoke.

Even breathing felt loud….

"And whoever caused it," he continued, "will beg for mercy and will not receive."

A shift of unease moved through the elders.

He leaned forward slightly, elbows resting against the arms of his throne.

"You mistake my restraint for blindness."

The tension tightened.

And then—

A memory rose.

Hours earlier.

The library still smelled of smoke.

Ash drifted through the air in thin gray lines…

Kaelreth stood in the center of the damaged floor while the elders gathered around.

Elder Maevryn stepped forward slowly.

She was old, her hair silvered not by age but by power, her eyes pale and unfocused when she worked.

Her gift was simple and feared, She could sense intent, a cause of a situation

She knelt and placed her palm flat against the blackened stone.

The chamber stilled and Her breathing slowed.

Her eyes went distant, her pupils were no longer in sight

Kaelreth watched her without moving.

After a long moment, she spoke.

"It was guided."

The words were soft but they carried weight.

Kaelreth's gaze sharpened. "Clarify."

The fire did not begin from negligence, she said, voice strained now. "It was placed and deliberate. The energy signature is not wild. It is directed."

A muscle ticked in his jaw.

"Intentional," she finished.

Her hand trembled as she pulled it back.

The room had grown colder.

The present returned.

Kaelreth rose from his throne.

"It was intentional," he repeated to the full court.

A visible ripple of fear spread across the chamber.

They knew what he could do when angered.

They had seen realms bend under his command.

He stepped down from the throne.

"If the one responsible does not step forward, I will uncover you myself."

No one moved.

Serathiel stood among them, face composed, heart racing hard enough to bruise.

She knew.

If the trail led too far, if Maevryn sensed deeper currents, if Lyrisse faltered under questioning or fear got the better of her, the truth could rise.

And Kaelreth would not forgive her.

Not for this.

Not after the way he carried Elara from that fire.

Something sharp formed in her mind.

It was Clean and she acted Fast.

She stepped forward.

"My lord," she said, voice calm.

All eyes turned.

"I had hoped this would remain an unfortunate incident," she continued, "but since the elder has confirmed intent, I must speak."

Lyrisse stiffened where she stood along the side wall.

Serathiel turned slowly toward her and pointed at her..

"Lyrisse," she said evenly, "I saw you near the library shortly before the fire began."

Lyrisse blinked. "What."

"You were not assigned there."

"I was passing through." Lyrisse said

Serathiel tilted her head slightly. "Passing through a restricted archive corridor."

Murmurs started.

Lyrisse shook her head. That….. proves nothing, she stuttered

Serathiel's gaze sharpened. "Your control over flame currents is known. You have struggled to refine it."

"That is a lie."

"Is it," Serathiel replied calmly.

Kaelreth watched without interrupting.

The pressure in the room thickened.

Lyrisse's voice began to shake. "You…..cannot accuse me…..without….. proof."

Elder Maevryn stepped forward again, eyes narrowing slightly as she focused.

"Approach," she ordered Lyrisse.

Lyrisse hesitated at first but when she noticed the Guards moving towards her, She swallowed and stepped forward, visibly trembling now.

Maevryn reached out, not touching her, but hovering her palm inches from Lyrisse's chest.

The elder's eyes unfocused again and the chamber shook a little…

Lyrisse's breathing quickened.

"No," she whispered. "You cannot see that far back."

Maevryn's expression changed and she lowered her hand slowly.

"The flame was hers."

The words dropped like a blade.

A sharp intake of breath spread through the court.

Lyrisse staggered back. "No. I—"

"You guided it," Maevryn said. "You fed it. You intended harm."

Lyrisse's composure shattered.

"It was not meant to spread like that," she cried suddenly.

Silence fell….

She realized what she had admitted too late.

Kaelreth's presence shifted.

 He looked Dangerous.

"Not meant to spread," he repeated softly.

Lyrisse dropped to her knees. "I only wanted to frighten her…. To…. To.. weaken her. I did not think—"

"You thought," he interrupted coldly.

His power pressed outward without visible movement.

The torches along the chamber walls flickered violently.

"You thought you could burn someone under my protection."

Her sobs filled the room.

Serathiel lowered her gaze slightly, hiding her face filled with calculation….

Guards moved in,

"Take her to the dungeon," Kaelreth ordered.

"No," Lyrisse screamed as they seized her arms. "Please. I did not act alone."

The chamber froze and murmurs were all over

Serathiel did not move but was a bit shaken…

Kaelreth's eyes narrowed.

Lyrisse struggled against the guards, panic breaking her completely.

"I was—"

The pressure in the room spiked so sharply that her voice cut off into a choked gasp.

Kaelreth did not raise a hand.

He did not need to.

"If she remains in my sight for another moment," he said quietly, "I won't hold back."

The guards dragged her away.

Her screams echoed down the corridor long after the doors shut behind her.

No one spoke.

Not a single elder dared question him.

They had seen him furious before.

But never like this. And to top it all over a human.

That truth hung heavier than the smoke from the library had.

Kaelreth scanned the room once more.

"If there are others involved," he said calmly, which was somehow worse than shouting, "I will know."

His gaze lingered across every face.

Including Serathiel's.

She held his eyes steadily.

Unflinching.

Inside, her pulse raced fast...

He turned without another word and walked out.

The meeting dissolved in hushed whispers only after the doors sealed behind him.

Fear lingered long after he left.

Elara did not hear any of it.

She was somewhere unfamiliar…

Running and confused

The dream was unclear, shifting like broken glass, faces she did not recognize blurred past her, voices calling her a name she did not understand.

Not Elara but a name that Sounded older.

A woman knelt before her in the dream, dark hair braided with silver thread.

"You must not show them," the woman said urgently. "Hide it."

A man stood behind her, tall, eyes glowing faintly silver.

"They will come," he said. "They always come."

The scene shifted….

She saw Flames in a distance.

Bigger flames, worst than the one she encountered in the library…

She saw wings reflected in water.

Her own reflection did not look human.

She tried to speak.

The dream shifted again.

This time she heard a child's laughter.

Hands lifting her.

A voice whispering, "You are not meant to be small."

Then everyone screaming and Running…

Cold hands pulling her away from someone.

"Forget," the woman's voice commanded softly.

"Forget who you are."

Then Everywhere Shattered…

Elara jerked upright in her bed, breath tearing from her lungs.

Her chest pounding and The room was dark andQuiet.

Her hands trembled as she looked around.

The guards were still outside.

The walls were Intact.

But her heart would not slow down

She pressed her palm against her chest, The silver current stirred faintly beneath her skin.

It was Awake.

And for the first time, she was not sure if she doubted her existence..
