Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18: THE WATCHER

A week passed after the region clear.

Ji-hu fell into a rhythm that felt almost normal. Shop during the day, stocking shelves and greeting customers and selling bandages to Defenders who came through. Training in the evenings with Yuna, learning to control the fire and water that still came and went like unreliable guests. Small patrols at night, walking the perimeter and watching for monsters that rarely came.

But something was different now.

He felt her sometimes. At night when he sat alone on the dojo steps, a flicker of movement at the edge of his vision. During patrols when the hairs on his neck stood up for no reason. The sense of eyes on his back, watching, waiting.

She was always there. Always watching. Never approaching.

He started leaving things out. A blanket by the dojo door on cold nights, folded neatly where it could be seen. Food that disappeared by morning—bread, dried meat, once a small pot of soup that he left covered. A knife sharpening stone he found at the shop, placed next to the blanket.

Small offerings. Nothing dramatic.

He never mentioned it to Yuna. She noticed anyway. She just didn't say anything.

---

One night, he was sitting on the dojo steps when she appeared at the tree line.

Not approaching. Just visible. Standing there in the moonlight like a ghost who decided to let herself be seen.

Ji-hu: You know, most people use the front door.

Ara: Most people aren't me.

She didn't come closer. But she didn't leave either. Thirty meters between them. Shouting distance but not close.

Ji-hu: You've been watching me for weeks.

Ara: You noticed.

Ji-hu: Hard not to.

Ara: Most people don't notice. That's why I'm still alive.

Ji-hu: What changed?

She didn't answer right away. Just stood there, studying him like he was a puzzle she couldn't quite solve.

Ara: Your sister. Hana.

Ji-hu: What about her?

Ara: She came to visit you. After the Zone. I saw her.

Ji-hu: You were watching that too?

Ara: I'm always watching.

She said it like a fact. Not a threat. Just truth.

Ara: She loves you. That's rare. People who love like that don't find each other often.

Ji-hu: You don't know anything about us.

Ara: I know she held onto you like you were the only thing that mattered. I know you smiled when you saw her. Real smile. Not the one you wear for customers.

Ji-hu didn't know what to say to that.

Ara: Where did you learn to fight?

Ji-hu: Yuna teaches me. Basic stuff. I'm still learning.

Ara: You have instincts. Raw but there. The way you moved against those Dark Elves. That's not just training.

Ji-hu: Where did you learn?

She went quiet.

Ji-hu: You don't have to answer.

Ara: Somewhere you don't want to know about.

Ji-hu: Try me.

Long pause.

Ara: A world with no people. Just monsters. Just me. Two years of fighting to survive every single day. You learn fast or you die.

Ji-hu: Two years alone?

Ara: Alone is easier. No one to worry about.

Ji-hu: You keep saying that. I don't think you believe it.

She didn't argue.

---

Yuna came out of the dojo halfway through their conversation. She froze when she saw Ara at the tree line, her hand moving instinctively toward her weapon.

Yuna: That's her. The one from the Zone.

Ara: The one who saved your life.

Yuna: The one who disappeared before Valiant arrived.

Ara: Same person.

Tension crackled in the air. Yuna's eyes narrowed.

Yuna: You've been watching us. For weeks.

Ara: Watching him. You're just nearby.

Yuna: That's not comforting.

Ara: It's not meant to be.

Yuna took a step forward. Ji-hu stood up.

Ji-hu: Yuna. She's not a threat.

Yuna: You don't know that.

Ara: If I wanted to hurt either of you, you'd already be dead. Both of you. Multiple times by now.

She said it like a fact. Not a threat. Just truth.

Yuna stared at her for a long moment. Then slowly, reluctantly, she lowered her hand.

Yuna: I don't trust you.

Ara: Good. Trust gets people killed.

Yuna: But Ji-hu does. For some reason. So I'll tolerate you.

Ara: Tolerate. That's generous.

Yuna shook her head and went back inside, leaving them alone again.

Ara: She's protective.

Ji-hu: She lost someone. Before the Convergence. Her son.

Ara: Everyone's lost someone.

Ji-hu: Yeah. They have.

Silence settled between them. Comfortable in a way that surprised them both.

Ara: I should go.

Ji-hu: You always say that.

Ara: Because I always should.

She didn't move.

Ji-hu: Stay. Just for a while. Not close. Just... stay.

Long pause. He could see her thinking, calculating, weighing risks.

Ara: Okay.

She sat down at the tree line. He stayed on the steps. Thirty meters between them. The furthest apart two people could be while still being together.

Then the night exploded.

---

Three figures emerged from the darkness down the street.

They didn't sneak. They didn't hide. They walked straight toward the dojo with purpose written in every step. Dohyun led them, lightning flickering around his hands, casting his face in harsh blue light. Behind him, two other hunters moved in formation—one with earth affinity, one with speed. A-rank patches on all of them.

Dohyun: Nameless trash! Get out here!

Ji-hu was on his feet instantly. Twin blades drawn. Yuna burst from the dojo behind him, telekinesis already humming.

Yuna: What the hell is this?

Dohyun: This is settling a debt. Your boy embarrassed me in front of my entire guild. I'm here to return the favor.

Ji-hu: This is about the duel? You lost. Get over it.

Dohyun: I didn't lose. The fight was stopped. Now I'm finishing it.

He signaled. The three of them spread out, surrounding the dojo yard with practiced coordination.

Ji-hu's eyes flicked toward the tree line. Ara was still there, still sitting, watching. She hadn't moved. But something in her posture had changed. She was ready.

Ji-hu: Yuna.

Yuna: I see them.

Dohyun raised his hand. Lightning gathered.

Dohyun: By morning, you'll be too broken to talk. And your little dojo will be ash.

The night held its breath.
