## NARRATIVE
It starts small.
Week one after he gets back from Dubai, she tells him she's fine when she's clearly not fine.
He lets it go.
Week two, she picks a fight about something stupid—he left a towel on the floor—and escalates it until they're both yelling.
He apologizes even though it's not his fault.
Week three, she tells him she needs space.
"How much space?"
"I don't know. A few days."
"Okay."
He goes to a hotel. She lasts six hours before calling him at midnight.
"Come back."
He's there in twenty minutes.
Week four, she tells him she cheated on him.
That's when it gets bad.
---
They're having dinner at his place when she says it.
Casual. Like she's commenting on the weather.
"I slept with someone else last week."
His fork stops moving.
"What?"
"When you were in Dubai. I went to a party. Met someone. Went home with him."
He sets down his fork very carefully. "You're lying."
"I'm not."
"You are." His voice is tight. "You were home the entire time I was gone. I checked the security footage."
"You checked the—" She stops. "You're spying on me?"
"I'm not spying. I wanted to make sure you were safe after—" He gestures vaguely at her scars. "After everything."
"So you're watching me. Monitoring me."
"That's not what I'm doing."
"Then what are you doing?"
He stands up. Walks to the window. Stands there with his back to her.
"Why did you lie?" he asks quietly.
"I didn't."
"Roman—"
"Fine. I lied. Are you happy?"
"No, I'm not fucking happy." He turns around. "Why would you lie about cheating on me? What possible reason—"
"I wanted to see what you'd do."
"What I'd—" He stops. Breathes. "You wanted to see if I'd leave."
"Yes."
"And if I had?"
"Then I'd know. I'd know that you have limits. That there's a line I can cross that would make you leave."
"There isn't."
"There has to be."
"There isn't." He crosses the room. Stops in front of her. "You can lie to me. You can test me. You can tell me you cheated. And I will stay. Every single time."
"That's not healthy."
"I don't care."
"You should care."
"Well I don't." He sits down heavily. "Is there anything else? Any other lies you want to tell me? Any other tests you want to run?"
She doesn't answer.
---
Two days later she tries to leave.
Actually packs a bag. Calls an Uber. Gets as far as the front door.
He's in his office on a call when he sees her bag.
"I have to call you back."
He finds her in the entryway, bag in hand, staring at the door like it's a thousand miles away.
"What are you doing?"
"Leaving."
"Why?"
"Because this is insane. Because I'm dependent on you and that's not healthy. Because I'm testing you constantly and that's not fair. Because—" Her voice cracks. "Because eventually you're going to leave anyway and I'd rather control when it happens."
"I'm not leaving."
"You will. Everyone does."
"I won't."
"You don't know that."
He takes the bag from her hand. Sets it down. "Yes I do."
"How?"
"Because I love you. Because I've decided I'm staying. Because there is nothing—and I mean nothing—you can do that will make me leave."
"What if I actually cheat?"
"I'll be devastated. I'll probably break something. But I won't leave."
"What if I lie again?"
"I'll call you on it. But I won't leave."
"What if I keep testing you until you can't take it anymore?"
"Then I'll keep passing the tests." He pulls her close. "You can push me away as hard as you want. I'm not going anywhere."
She starts crying. Actually crying. The bag forgotten on the floor.
"I don't know how to stop," she says into his chest.
"Stop what?"
"Testing you. Lying. Trying to push you away before you can leave first."
"Then don't stop. Keep doing it. I'll keep staying."
"That's not sustainable."
"Maybe not. But it's what we have right now."
---
Week six she disappears for an entire day.
Doesn't tell him where she's going. Turns off her phone. Just—vanishes.
He finds her at 2 AM sitting in her car outside her old apartment building.
The one she gave up. The one that doesn't exist for her anymore.
He knocks on the window.
She unlocks the door. He gets in the passenger seat.
They sit in silence for five minutes.
"I thought about leaving," she says finally. "Driving somewhere. Starting over. Becoming someone who doesn't need anyone."
"Did it work?"
"No. I sat here for eight hours and all I could think about was coming back to you."
"So come back."
"I'm scared."
"Of what?"
"Of this. Of needing you. Of what happens when you realize I'm too broken to fix."
"You're not broken."
"Yes I am."
"Okay. Then you're broken and I love you anyway." He takes her hand. "Come home."
"What if I do this again? What if I disappear again?"
"Then I'll find you again."
"You can't promise that."
"Watch me."
---
They fight constantly now.
Not about real things. About stupid things. Towels and dishes and whether the thermostat should be at 72 or 74.
But underneath every fight is the same question: Will you stay?
And every time, his answer is: Yes.
---
She tells Avery about it over coffee.
"I'm sabotaging everything."
"I know."
"I keep lying to him. Testing him. Trying to make him leave."
"And?"
"And he won't. He just—stays. No matter what I do."
Avery is quiet for a moment. "Do you want him to leave?"
"No."
"Then why are you trying to make him?"
"Because I'm terrified. Because if he stays and then leaves later, it'll destroy me. But if I can make him leave now, I can survive it."
"That's not how it works."
"I know."
"So stop."
"I can't."
Avery sighs. "Then you need to figure out how to be this terrified without destroying everything. Because he's not leaving. And you're going to have to accept that eventually."
---
Month fourteen, she wakes up at 3 AM in a panic.
Khalid is asleep next to her. She watches him breathe.
She's tested him for six weeks straight. Lied about cheating. Tried to leave. Disappeared for a day. Picked fights about nothing.
And he's still here.
She reaches out. Touches his face gently.
He wakes up. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Roman—"
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For testing you. For lying. For trying to leave. For—" She stops. "For being so broken that I can't just accept that you love me."
He pulls her close. "You're not broken."
"I am."
"Okay. Then you're broken and I'm staying anyway."
"Why?"
"Because I love you. And because your broken fits with my broken. And because I've decided that this—" he gestures between them "—is worth it."
"Even when I'm testing you?"
"Especially when you're testing me. Because every test I pass proves I mean what I say."
She's quiet for a long moment. Then: "I'm going to keep doing it."
"I know."
"I'm going to keep testing you. Maybe forever."
"Okay."
"And you're going to keep staying?"
"Yes."
She presses closer to him. "That's insane."
"Probably." He kisses her forehead. "But it's what we have."
---
Two days later, she tries one more test.
Small one. Tells him she's going to a party alone. That he can't come.
"Okay," he says.
"You're not going to fight me on this?"
"No."
"You're not going to ask who's going to be there?"
"No."
"You're not going to worry I'll do something stupid?"
"I trust you."
She stares at him. "You shouldn't."
"But I do."
She goes to the party. Lasts forty minutes. Comes home.
He's reading in bed when she walks in.
"You came back early," he says.
"I couldn't do it."
"Do what?"
"Be there without you. Be anywhere without you." She sits on the edge of the bed. "I think I'm done testing."
"You're not done testing."
"I want to be done testing."
"That's different." He sets down his book. "You'll test me again. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week. And I'll stay. Every time."
"How do you know?"
"Because I've decided. And I don't change my mind."
She climbs into bed next to him. "I love you."
"I know."
"No, I mean—I love you in a way that makes me understand why you stay. Because if you tried to leave, I'd do the same thing. I'd chase you. I'd prove I meant it. I'd stay no matter what."
"I know that too."
"Then we're both insane."
"Probably." He pulls her close. "But we're insane together."
