Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: The Otaku Finds the Sanctuary

Chapter 56: The Otaku Finds the Sanctuary (And It's Not What Anyone Expected)

The second day in the foothills was worse than the first.

The path narrowed until it was barely a ledge. The rocks grew sharper. The air grew thinner. And the pressure at the edge of Meliodas's awareness never stopped growing.

Closer.

Always closer.

Kaelen climbed behind him, breathing controlled, the loop on his wrist flickering between white and pale pink. He was tired. They all were.

But he didn't complain.

Rem stayed close to Meliodas, her tail occasionally brushing his leg for balance—or comfort. Hard to tell with her.

Edrin and Lira still hadn't spoken, but they moved together like they'd been doing this their whole lives. Years of training didn't disappear just because trust did.

Vex walked in silence, watching the sky more than the path. Waiting for something.

Bud remained on Meliodas's shoulder, glow dim, eyes sharp.

'The pressure is closer.'

'I know.'

'It's not just following anymore. It's circling.'

Meliodas stopped.

Looked at the sky.

The clouds moved wrong. Swirling in patterns that didn't match the wind.

"The crack is trying to open again," Vex said quietly. "Not fully. Just enough to push through more scouts."

Meliodas nodded. "How long?"

"A day. Maybe two." She met his eyes. "It's learning. Adapting. The hand failing made it angry."

"Good. Angry makes mistakes."

Vex almost smiled. "You really believe that?"

"I've survived this long."

She didn't argue.

---

They climbed higher as the sun peaked and began its slow descent.

The mountains loomed above them, ancient and indifferent.

And then, suddenly, the path ended.

Not at a cliff.

At a wall.

Stone, smooth and seamless, rising fifty feet high. No door. No gate. No visible entrance.

Kaelen stared. "The map says the sanctuary is here."

Meliodas looked at the wall.

{Observation Haki} stretched.

Nothing.

Just stone.

Impossibly smooth stone.

Bud hopped off his shoulder and grew to cat-size, pressing his nose against the surface.

'It's not natural.'

'I noticed.'

'There's magic here. Old magic. Sleeping.'

Meliodas filed that away.

'Can you wake it?'

'I can try. But it might not like me.'

'Why?'

'I'm a dragon. Old magic is picky about guests.'

Meliodas considered.

Then he stepped forward and placed his palm against the stone.

{Knowledge Mage} activated.

Blue text unfolded at the edge of his vision.

[LOCATION: VELDRA'S REST — ANCIENT SANCTUARY]

[STATUS: SEALED — AWAITING BLOODLINE CONFIRMATION]

[NOTES: Constructed by followers of Veldrind during the Age of Dragon Kings. Keyed to specific bloodlines. Unauthorized entry triggers defensive measures.]

Meliodas read it twice.

'Veldrind. One of the Three True Dragons.'

He looked at Kaelen.

"Put your hand on the wall."

Kaelen blinked. "Master?"

"Your bloodline is the key. Try it."

Kaelen stepped forward, hesitant, and pressed his palm against the stone.

Nothing happened.

For a long moment.

Then the stone began to glow.

Faint at first. Then brighter. Symbols etched themselves into the surface, ancient and precise, pulsing with soft blue light.

The wall didn't open.

It dissolved.

Not like crumbling stone. Like morning mist burning away under sunlight.

Beyond it lay a valley.

Hidden. Sealed. Protected.

Lush green grass. A crystal-clear lake. Buildings of white stone, ancient but intact. And at the center, a massive tree whose leaves shimmered with golden light.

Kaelen stared. "This... this has been here the whole time?"

"Hidden," Vex breathed. "The whole valley, hidden behind a wall of illusion."

Rem stepped through first, ears perked, tail high. "It's beautiful."

Meliodas followed, {Observation Haki} stretched.

No threats.

Just peace.

Old, ancient peace.

Bud flew in, wings spread, light brightening.

'This place feels like... like the memories. From the whelp.'

Meliodas looked at him.

'Good memories or bad?'

'Old. Powerful. Not dangerous.'

Good enough.

---

They walked through the valley toward the central building.

The air was warmer here. Softer. Like the valley itself was breathing.

Kaelen's loop glowed steady white for the first time in days.

Rem kept glancing around, tail swishing with barely contained curiosity.

Edrin and Lira walked apart but closer than before. The silence between them had shifted. Not healed. Just... less sharp.

Vex watched everything with the eyes of someone cataloging intelligence.

Meliodas let them explore.

He stood at the edge of the lake, watching his reflection.

He hadn't meditated in days. He could feel it. The edges of his power frayed. {Sun Fruit} still there. {Rush} still ready. But dulled. Tired.

He sat.

Closed his eyes.

Breathed.

{Recharge}.

Two hours.

He'd need them.

---

When he opened his eyes, the sun had moved.

Rem sat beside him, tail curled around her ankles, watching him quietly.

"You done?"

"For now."

"That looked peaceful."

"It was work."

She snorted. "Only you would call meditation work."

He stood, stretching.

Kaelen was at the central building, examining the carvings on its doors. Edrin and Lira stood nearby, actually standing near each other for the first time. Vex was at the tree, touching its golden leaves with something like reverence.

Bud landed on Meliodas's shoulder.

'This place is safe. For now.'

'For now?'

'The crack knows we're here. It can't enter. But it's waiting.'

Meliodas looked at the sky.

The clouds were still wrong.

Still circling.

Waiting.

"Then we use the time."

He walked toward the central building.

Kaelen looked up as he approached. "Master, these carvings... they tell a story. About a dragon. About a war. About a sanctuary built to protect something precious."

Meliodas looked at the carvings.

Dragons. Warriors. A great battle. And at the center, a single figure—human-shaped, but radiating light.

Kaelen's voice was quiet. "Master... is that...?"

"I don't know."

But he had a guess.

---

They entered the building together.

Inside, it was simple. A single large room with a raised platform at the center. On the platform, a crystal. Clear. Pristine. Pulsing with soft light.

Vex's voice was hushed. "That's a bloodline crystal. They were used to... to stabilize those with dangerous inheritances. To help them control what they were."

Kaelen stared at it. "It could help me?"

"It could save you."

Meliodas nodded. "Then that's what we do."

Kaelen stepped forward.

Then stopped.

The crystal pulsed brighter.

And a voice filled the room.

Not aloud.

In their minds.

"Welcome, child of blood. We have waited long for you."

Kaelen froze.

The voice continued, warm and ancient.

"This sanctuary was built for those like you. Those whose blood carries the weight of ages. Rest here. Heal here. Learn here."

Meliodas stepped closer to Kaelen.

"Can you do it? Can you use it?"

Kaelen swallowed. "I... I think so."

"Then do it."

Kaelen approached the crystal.

Placed his hand on its surface.

Light exploded.

Not painful. Not violent. Just... everywhere.

Kaelen's loop flashed red, then orange, then white—and stayed white.

His eyes closed.

His breathing slowed.

And for the first time since Meliodas had met him, he looked at peace.

---

The light faded.

Kaelen opened his eyes.

They were different. Not glowing. Just... deeper. Older.

"Master," he said quietly. "I know what I am now."

Meliodas waited.

"I'm not just a prince. I'm not just a target." He looked at his hands. "I'm the last of my line. The only one left. My mother's dead. My father wants me dead. Any other relatives either died long ago or distanced themselves from the royal bloodline." His voice was calm, accepting. "The crack wants me because my blood can anchor something that's been trying to enter this world for millennia."

Meliodas absorbed that.

"And now?"

Kaelen met his eyes. "Now I know how to stop it."

"How?"

"With help." He looked at Meliodas. "With you. With Rem. With everyone who's willing to stand against it."

Meliodas nodded slowly.

"Then we stand."

Kaelen almost smiled.

Almost.

---

Outside, the sky had darkened.

Not night.

Something else.

The clouds were thick now, swirling, pulsing with sickly light.

The crack was opening.

Not fully.

But enough.

And through it, a voice echoed.

"You cannot hide forever, little prince."

Kaelen didn't flinch.

He stepped out of the building, Meliodas beside him, Rem flanking, Edrin and Lira behind, Vex watching the sky with grim recognition.

"We're not hiding," Kaelen said. Not loud. But clear.

The crack pulsed.

"Then you will die."

"Maybe." Kaelen looked at Meliodas. "But not alone."

Meliodas met his eyes.

"No," he said quietly. "Not alone."

The light from the valley caught them both—Kaelen calm and steady, Meliodas silhouetted against the ancient stone, Bud glowing on his shoulder, Rem close at his side.

If this was a last stand, it was a beautiful one.

The crack widened.

And the waiting ended.
