Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26: BREACH

CHAPTER 26: BREACH

The alert arrived at 2:17 AM.

Sharp.

Relentless.

And impossible to ignore.

Every screen inside Knox Global's cybersecurity division lit up in red.

Access breach detected.

Encrypted files accessed.

Unauthorized internal transmission.

Within minutes, the quiet night inside the building turned into controlled chaos.

Phones rang.

Security teams rushed through corridors.

And deep inside the executive floor, Adrian Knox was already awake.

Adrian's Office

The door burst open without warning.

Elara stepped inside.

Her hair was still damp from the rain outside, and the urgency in her eyes said everything before she even spoke.

"There's been a breach."

Adrian didn't look surprised.

He was already standing near his desk, jacket on, laptop open.

"Which sector?"

"Executive archive."

That answer made the room fall silent for a second.

The executive archive was Knox Global's most protected database.

Strategic contracts.

Internal communications.

Long-term corporate acquisitions.

And something else.

Something even more sensitive.

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"How long?"

"Seventeen minutes."

Elara walked closer.

"Our systems detected a massive encrypted transfer."

"To where?"

"We don't know yet."

Adrian closed the laptop slowly.

"Show me."

The Cybersecurity Floor

Rows of monitors filled the dimly lit room.

Lines of code scrolled endlessly across the screens.

Engineers spoke in low, rapid voices.

When Adrian and Elara entered, the room went noticeably quieter.

Marcus Vale turned toward them.

His expression was grim.

"We've contained the external connection."

"But?" Elara asked.

Marcus hesitated.

"But the files were already copied."

Elara felt her chest tighten.

"What files?"

Marcus tapped a keyboard.

One screen displayed a list.

Dozens of documents.

Strategic expansion plans.

Internal board communications.

Financial structures.

But one file stood out.

Highlighted in red.

Marcus glanced at Adrian.

"This one."

Elara leaned closer.

The file name appeared clearly.

Project Helios.

She frowned.

"What is that?"

The room felt suddenly heavier.

Because Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Adrian's Silence

Elara turned toward him.

"You know what that is."

Adrian's gaze remained fixed on the screen.

"Yes."

Her voice sharpened slightly.

"Then why have I never seen it before?"

Because Elara Vale had clearance for nearly every strategic file inside Knox Global.

Except this one.

Marcus cleared his throat awkwardly.

"This project is restricted."

Elara crossed her arms.

"Restricted from me?"

Adrian finally spoke.

"It's restricted from everyone."

The answer only made things worse.

"Then why does it exist?"

Adrian's jaw tightened slightly.

"That's not important right now."

Elara stared at him.

"Someone just stole it."

Now it became important.

For a brief moment, the room went completely silent except for the faint hum of the servers.

Marcus spoke carefully.

"The transfer is still active internally."

Elara blinked.

"Internally?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian's eyes sharpened instantly.

"Meaning the attacker is still inside our system."

"Exactly."

Elara's voice dropped.

"So whoever did this…"

"…is still inside the building," Adrian finished.

Lockdown

Within minutes, Knox Global headquarters went into full lockdown.

Security doors sealed.

Elevators frozen.

External connections severed.

Employees still inside the building were instructed to remain where they were.

The board of directors began calling immediately.

Demanding explanations.

Adrian ignored them.

For now.

Instead, he stood in the center of the surveillance room, studying the network map.

Hundreds of nodes.

One blinking signal.

Moving.

Marcus pointed at the screen.

"There."

The signal shifted across internal servers.

Like someone navigating the company's digital bloodstream.

Elara whispered.

"They're still downloading."

Adrian nodded.

"Not downloading."

Marcus zoomed in.

The signal paused at another server.

A secondary archive.

Marcus frowned.

"They're searching."

"For what?" Elara asked.

Adrian answered quietly.

"For something specific."

The Board Intervenes

The emergency meeting began twenty minutes later.

Seven board members appeared across the conference screen.

Their expressions ranged from furious to frightened.

Victor Hale spoke first.

"We just received reports that confidential data has been stolen."

His voice carried the weight of accusation.

Adrian sat at the head of the table.

Composed.

"We're handling it."

"That's not good enough."

Another board member leaned forward.

"The press will destroy us if this gets out."

Elara remained silent beside Adrian.

Observing.

Watching the reactions.

Fear.

Anger.

But something else too.

Victor Hale spoke again.

"And apparently the stolen file includes something called Project Helios."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Care to explain that, Adrian?"

The room held its breath.

Adrian's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

The answer stunned the board.

Victor slammed a hand on the table.

"You will explain it!"

Adrian's voice stayed calm.

"When the situation requires it."

"This situation requires it now."

Adrian leaned back slightly.

"No."

The tension on the call exploded instantly.

One board member snapped.

"You don't have the authority to hide something like this from the board."

Adrian's gaze turned colder.

"I built this company."

"And you answer to it now."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then Elara noticed something.

Victor Hale wasn't angry.

He was watching Adrian carefully.

Too carefully.

As if he had expected that reaction.

And suddenly a thought formed in her mind.

What if the breach wasn't the real objective?

The Signal Moves

Back in the surveillance room, Marcus called urgently.

"Adrian."

Everyone turned toward the main screen.

The signal inside the system moved again.

Rapidly now.

Jumping across servers.

Searching.

Then it stopped.

Right on top of a new file.

Marcus zoomed in.

Elara read the title.

Her stomach dropped.

Board Member Communications — Private Archive

Someone was accessing the board's secret internal messages.

Marcus whispered.

"This isn't a hacker."

"No," Adrian said quietly.

"It's someone looking for leverage."

The file opened.

Hundreds of messages appeared.

Deals.

Conflicts.

Political maneuvering.

And then—

One message expanded automatically.

From: Victor Hale

To: Unknown recipient.

Subject: Stage Five

Elara's breath caught.

The room went silent again.

Because the message was short.

But devastating.

"Proceed once the breach begins. Knox won't see it coming."

Every eye in the room turned slowly toward Adrian.

And then toward the conference screen.

Where Victor Hale was still connected.

Still watching.

Still silent.

Realization

Elara's voice came out slowly.

"Victor…"

The board member's face didn't change.

But the tension in his posture did.

"You've been planning this," she said.

Victor smiled faintly.

"You're smarter than I expected."

The other board members exploded into chaos.

"What is this?"

"Victor, what did you do?"

But Victor ignored them.

His eyes stayed fixed on Adrian.

"You've controlled Knox Global long enough."

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"You staged a cyber attack."

Victor shrugged.

"Only partially."

"What does that mean?"

Victor's smile widened slightly.

"It means the breach wasn't meant to steal anything."

Elara's heart started beating faster.

"Then what was it for?"

Victor answered softly.

"To expose something."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Project Helios."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

The room felt like it had lost oxygen.

Elara turned toward Adrian slowly.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The secrecy.

The restricted files.

The silence.

"Adrian…" she whispered.

"What is Project Helios?"

Adrian didn't answer.

For the first time since she met him—

He looked genuinely conflicted.

And that frightened her more than anything.

Victor spoke again.

"Go ahead, Adrian."

His voice echoed through the room.

"Tell them."

"Tell them what you've been hiding."

The board waited.

The security team waited.

Even Elara waited.

And after a long silence—

Adrian finally spoke.

Quietly.

"Project Helios…"

He looked directly at Elara.

"…was never supposed to be discovered."

Her pulse pounded in her ears.

"Why?"

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Because if the world knew about it…"

He paused.

And the words that followed changed everything.

"…Knox Global wouldn't just collapse."

"It would start a war."

Elsewhere

In the dark control room from before—

Someone watched the entire confrontation unfold through hacked surveillance feeds.

Victor Hale.

Project Helios.

Stage Five.

All exactly as planned.

The unknown observer leaned back slowly.

A quiet voice whispered into the darkness.

"Perfect."

Then another command executed on the screen.

One final file opened.

A classified Knox document.

Title:

Helios Contingency Protocol

Status:

Active.

And beneath it—

A countdown had already begun.
