BOOM.
A thunderous boom tore through the earth, followed by a heavy, muffled impact. In the next instant, a colossal serpent burst forth from the ground.
The giant snake opened its jaws wide, and from within, Orochimaru leapt out.
At a glance, he appeared completely unscathed—but the state of his chakra told a different story. It had plummeted to a dangerously low level. He sucked in several sharp breaths, forcing air into his lungs before pushing himself upright, clearly intent on fleeing as quickly as possible.
Although he had already caused the underground laboratory to collapse, he had no illusions. Someone of that level wouldn't be trapped by something so trivial.
His objective had been simple from the start: escape that heavily sealed underground facility.
Within those walls, no matter how fiercely they fought, it would never attract the attention of Konoha's forces. Only by coming out into the open could the sensory unit and the ANBU detect the disturbance—only then could he hope for reinforcements.
Orochimaru was a rational man—at least, he was being one now. He understood that he was outmatched, and so the idea of fighting alone never even crossed his mind.
And beneath that reasoning lay a deeper motive: if Konoha could capture this man, then Orochimaru would have the chance to study him, to uncover the secrets hidden within him.
"Boom!"
Before he could get far, the ground suddenly began to tremble violently. In the next heartbeat, an overwhelming wave of chakra surged forward, bearing down on him with suffocating force.
"Alert! Alert!"
Inside the Hokage building, a sensory ninja abruptly shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Nine-Tails chakra detected within Konoha! I repeat—Nine-Tails chakra has been detected inside the village!"
He wasn't the only one. Every member of the sensory unit felt it.
They had experienced this power not long ago—it was unforgettable. That suffocating, monstrous chakra was etched into their memories.
None of them had ever expected to feel it again.
Reacting instantly, the entire unit sprang into motion. Within moments, a report had already reached Hiruzen Sarutobi.
"What? The Nine-Tails?"
Inside the Hokage's office, Hiruzen froze when he heard the report, momentarily stunned.
The Nine-Tails had already been sealed, hadn't it?
And Kushina and Minato were at Mount Myoboku—they couldn't possibly have returned to attack Konoha.
Could it be… just the Nine-Tails' chakra?
That, at least, would make some sense. There were those who studied the Nine-Tails' chakra, after all.
Take Natsuhiko, for example—he himself possessed a portion of it.
But something about this situation didn't feel that simple.
"Notify the ANBU. Have Senju Natsuhiko move out immediately."
Hiruzen rose to his feet, already reaching for his battle armor.
"And gather the defensive ninja. They're to mobilize at once."
"Yes, Hokage-sama!"
The ninja responded loudly before rushing out without delay.
By now, Konoha had already descended into chaos.
And yet, in stark contrast, Natsuhiko appeared calmly before Orochimaru.
He already understood Orochimaru's intentions. It had to be said—the man's reaction speed was impressive. Or perhaps… he had planned his escape route from the very beginning.
Natsuhiko had sensed the giant snake Orochimaru summoned long ago. It had remained hidden and inactive, so he hadn't paid it much attention.
As for the underground lab, though it had been sturdy, it was never meant to withstand the full force of their battle. Its collapse under Orochimaru's jutsu was hardly surprising.
In fact, Natsuhiko found the situation rather convenient. Continuing the fight would serve little purpose—he might as well end it here.
"I have to admit, you're quite interesting, Orochimaru."
Natsuhiko walked forward unhurriedly, his golden chakra still blazing brilliantly around him.
"You collapsed the underground lab on purpose—to draw me out. Once I used the Nine-Tails' chakra and emerged, Konoha would be able to track me. That gives you the time you need to escape.
"And especially since it's the Nine-Tails' chakra… Konoha has already suffered an attack from another 'Nine-Tails' before."
"I have to admit… for an ant, you've managed to bite me. Interesting—very interesting."
Orochimaru endured the crushing pressure of Natsuhiko's aura, yet he maintained his composure. He slowly ran his tongue across his lips before speaking again, his voice steady despite the overwhelming force bearing down on him.
"You are indeed powerful. In another village, perhaps no one could truly stand against you.
"But Konoha has Wood Release. The fact that you came for me instead of him means you're wary of him as well. If I can draw him here too, then—"
"A solid analysis," Natsuhiko cut in calmly, a faint trace of amusement flickering in his eyes. "But just because I'm wary of him doesn't mean I'm wary of you."
The thought almost made him laugh. Saying something like that to Orochimaru—essentially admitting he was cautious of himself—was a bit shameless, but undeniably entertaining.
Still, amusement was one thing. He needed to end this quickly.
His expression turned indifferent as he looked at Orochimaru and spoke in a quiet, measured tone.
"I've memorized your chakra. I know what you're doing—and I understand it clearly.
"Hand over what I want, and I'll guarantee this: as long as you don't provoke us in the future, we won't trouble you. Otherwise, I will kill you."
Orochimaru smiled faintly. This man was arrogant to the extreme.
And yet, he knew better than to dismiss it as empty pride. The person standing before him had every right to be this arrogant—and more importantly, Orochimaru believed him.
His research into Wood Release could never withstand scrutiny. If the remains of Hashirama Senju were ever discovered, there would be only one outcome awaiting him:
Defection.
There would be no other path. Not even his teacher could protect him from something like that.
And once he lost Konoha's protection, if this man used his sensory abilities to track him down… the consequences would be disastrous.
That said, Orochimaru felt little attachment to staying in Konoha.
Yes, the village offered him protection—but that same protection came with chains. It hindered his pursuit of knowledge.
What he truly desired was to explore the unknown—whether it be kekkei genka, forbidden techniques, or even the mysteries of life itself.
Yet the things he wished to study were precisely the things Konoha forbade him from touching—at least, on the surface.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have allied with Danzo. Otherwise, he wouldn't have hidden himself away in the shadows, conducting experiments underground.
Perhaps, even without this incident, he would have chosen to leave someday.
But now that the situation had escalated to this point, he had no choice but to decide. If he didn't act, he might one day find himself hunted by a terrifying existence—unable to continue his research in peace.
"…You want my research reports?" Orochimaru asked, licking his lips again. After a brief pause, he nodded calmly. "Very well. And what else?"
"Simple." Natsuhiko didn't hesitate, already anticipating Orochimaru's thoughts. "For insurance, I want your experimental subject list—and a portion of Hashirama Senju's remains."
Then his gaze sharpened, his voice turning cold.
"Don't try to bargain. You don't have that right in front of me."
…
"What a haul."
Holding a thick stack of documents along with fragments of Hashirama Senju's remains, Natsuhiko appeared at the far end of the village.
He had left right in front of Orochimaru.
If one was going to act, then the act had to be convincing. For form's sake, he had even performed a summoning technique.
Of course, nothing had actually been summoned—only a cloud of smoke.
Using that brief cover, he activated the Flying Thunder God Technique, creating the illusion of a reverse summoning and vanishing from the scene.
As for whether Orochimaru believed it or not, Natsuhiko couldn't care less.
At worst, the next time they met, he would simply make his natural chakra presence a bit more pronounced.
After all, during their encounter, he had completely masked himself in the Nine-Tails' chakra.
There had never been any risk of exposure to begin with.
Once he returned to his identity as Natsuhiko Senju, he decided it would be best to keep the Nine-Tails' chakra properly concealed.
Even if he couldn't hide it completely, at the very least it shouldn't appear so overwhelming and conspicuous.
Natsuhiko was confident he could manage it—and the little Nine-Tails within him had already given a reassuring answer.
"As I continue absorbing and familiarizing myself with this chakra, I've started to gain a bit of control over my own power," it explained. "I can't say I've fully mastered it yet, but suppressing its presence isn't a problem anymore.
"However, I've also noticed something else. The chakra you've absorbed carries an incredibly potent natural energy. It's somewhat similar to your Sage Mode. That probably explains why you've been able to seal it within yourself without suffering any major backlash."
Natural energy?
Natsuhiko couldn't help but twitch slightly at the corner of his mouth. He had never really taken the time to carefully examine the chakra of the Ryūmyaku.
To him, it had always been more like fuel—or even a tool for intimidation. Unlike the Nine-Tails, he had never continuously absorbed or studied it in depth.
But if what the little Nine-Tails said was true… if that chakra really was a form of natural energy, then perhaps he could make use of it while in Sage Mode.
Any method that could enhance his combat strength was something he wouldn't ignore.
In the past, he simply hadn't known. But now that he did, if he failed to act on it, he'd be doing a disservice to his identity as a transmigrator.
At that thought, his mind drifted to another issue—his Sage Mode was still stuck at the Intermediate level.
He had yet to grasp the "seed" of an Advanced Sage Mode, and that was far from good news.
The truth was, he didn't have much of a clue where to begin. After his last battle with Jiraiya, he had even gone out of his way to investigate further, only to end up disappointed.
Still, now wasn't the time to dwell on that.
He already had more than enough plans in motion, and the items he had just acquired were exciting enough on their own—there was no need to burden himself with other concerns.
It had to be said, Orochimaru was a remarkably clever man. The saying "a wise man submits to circumstances" fit him perfectly.
It was no wonder that someone like him could assassinate the Fourth Kazekage, launch an attack on Konoha, and even provide the "core technology" that would later shape the Fourth Great Ninja War…
And yet, despite all that, he ultimately walked away unscathed.
He hadn't even attempted to bargain. Instead, he had handed over everything Natsuhiko demanded without hesitation.
Because of that, Natsuhiko obtained exactly what he wanted: a sufficient number of Hashirama Senju's remains, along with Orochimaru's experimental subject lists, detailed procedures, and final reports.
In truth, the list and the remains alone would have been enough for him.
But Natsuhiko understood one thing very well—if you were going to put on an act, you had to see it through to the end.
Even if he had no real use for those research materials, taking them would create the impression that his attacker had wanted them.
That way, suspicion would never fall on him.
"No matter what, I'm still a Konoha ninja. There's no way I'd attack one of my own."
Muttering to himself, Natsuhiko quickly restored his black hair back to its original silver. The clothes and mask he had worn earlier were sealed into a scroll, then burned to ashes without hesitation.
Once everything was taken care of and he had changed into a fresh set of clothes, he activated the Flying Thunder God Technique once more, returning to the forest where it had all begun.
Moments ago, he had been an unknown ninja who attacked Konoha.
Now, he was Natsuhiko Senju—the Commander of the ANBU.
Moving swiftly toward the site of the earlier battle, it didn't take long before he realized that Orochimaru was still there, waiting in the same place.
Natsuhiko couldn't quite tell whether Orochimaru truly believed he wouldn't pursue the matter any further, or whether he was simply confident that he could still hold his ground—even against a Nine-Tails–empowered opponent.
In the end, Natsuhiko didn't bother dwelling on it. Instead, he subtly stirred the senjutsu chakra within his body, carefully maintaining control so that he didn't fully enter Sage Mode.
Only after making those preparations did he move swiftly toward Orochimaru.
"Orochimaru-sama, what are you doing here? Are you alright?"
He appeared beside him like a ghost, his presence almost imperceptible. A warm, gentle smile spread across his face, giving him an unexpectedly bright and approachable air.
"What happened here? Why did I sense the Nine-Tails' chakra earlier?"
"Commander Natsuhiko. This is our first meeting, isn't it? I didn't even have the chance to congratulate you on becoming the Commander of the ANBU."
Orochimaru sensed the chakra approaching from behind and grew cautious. But when he detected the special natural energy within it, he knew who it was.
He turned to look at Natsuhiko, then spoke in his raspy voice.
"It was the Nine-Tails. More precisely, someone wielding its power attacked me."
"Oh?"
Natsuhiko raised an eyebrow, deliberately putting on a look of mild surprise.
"The Nine-Tails' power? It seems there are quite a few ambitious individuals in this world. Not long ago, the Third Hokage and I retrieved a portion of the Nine-Tails' chakra from the Land of Fire's capital."
At those words, the corner of Orochimaru's lips twitched faintly.
If it were merely a portion of the Nine-Tails' chakra… would it really have driven me into such a corner?
Would it have forced him to the brink of death, leaving him no choice but to surrender valuable materials just to survive?
Still, this was not something he could easily explain. The implication that there might be more than one "Nine-Tails" was far too significant.
After all, Tailed Beasts were weapons of strategic importance—and when that level of power was concentrated within a single individual, the results were almost unimaginable.
Unless faced with someone equally monstrous, such a person could challenge even the Five Great Ninja Villages.
It was the kind of power that could shatter the balance of the entire world.
"Commander Natsuhiko… it would be wise not to underestimate this."
Orochimaru shook his head lightly, running his tongue across his lips once more before turning to leave. His steps were slightly unsteady as he walked away, his voice drifting back over his shoulder.
"The world is vast, and we are far too small within it.
"That gap creates limits in our understanding… and traps us in ignorance.
"But perhaps you'll be fine, Commander Natsuhiko. After all, you possess a power that inspires fear."
With those cryptic words, Orochimaru gradually disappeared into the distance.
Natsuhiko watched him quietly, and only after his figure had completely vanished did a faint smile curl at the corners of his lips.
Not long after Orochimaru left, Hiruzen Sarutobi arrived with a group of defensive ninja, while members of the ANBU quickly gathered at the scene as well.
But the moment Hiruzen took in the surroundings, his expression changed dramatically.
He immediately ordered everyone to form a perimeter and forbade them from approaching any closer, choosing instead to step inside alone.
Before long, he reached the center of the battlefield—where Natsuhiko and Orochimaru had clashed. As he looked at the collapsed laboratory and the lingering traces of chakra in the air, a faint unease tightened in his chest.
And when he noticed a lone figure standing there, calmly observing everything, his heartbeat quickened even more.
"Commander Natsuhiko, you're already here?" Hiruzen steadied his emotions as he walked over. "Where is Orochimaru? Why haven't I seen him?"
"He's already left, Hokage-sama."
Natsuhiko turned, letting out a soft chuckle before sighing lightly.
"But this place… is rather surprising. I didn't expect it to be a laboratory.
"That man Yamato… he was created in a place like this, wasn't he?"
"Yamato?"
Hiruzen frowned, clearly confused by the name.
"I'm not sure I understand what you mean, Commander Natsuhiko. Who is Yamato?"
"Ah—my apologies, Hokage-sama. That was my mistake."
Natsuhiko smiled, shrugging slightly before continuing in a more deliberate, meaningful tone…
"Yamato is that kid who can use Wood Release," Natsuhiko said casually. "I just gave him a name.
"Oh, and Hokage-sama—this place is dangerous. It would be better if you returned. Leave this area to the ANBU; we'll take over from here."
The moment Hiruzen Sarutobi heard those words, he immediately understood the implication, and his eyes sharpened with vigilance.
Leave?
What kind of joke was that?
Was he supposed to step aside and let the ANBU take control—only to watch them tear this place apart and uncover evidence that should never see the light of day?
And what about Orochimaru? Why had he left so abruptly without explaining anything? The entire situation was still shrouded in uncertainty.
Hiruzen felt a surge of irritation rising in his chest, though he forced himself to suppress it. Taking a slow, steady breath, he spoke in a firm, controlled tone.
"There's no need for you to concern yourself with this, Commander Natsuhiko. I believe I can handle the matter myself."
"Is that so?" Natsuhiko raised an eyebrow, a smile still lingering on his face as he looked at Hiruzen. "Are you certain you don't need my help, Hokage-sama? This concerns Konoha, after all. As a member of the ANBU, I have a duty to act."
"Commander Natsuhiko." Hiruzen's expression turned stern. "Since you understand this involves Konoha, then you should also remember that I am the Hokage. Do not overstep your bounds—you are not the Hokage."
"I see." Natsuhiko nodded lightly, his smile never fading. "Understood. But Hokage-sama, do be careful. Don't let me catch anyone or anything beyond Yamato."
With that, he turned cleanly on his heel, not even sparing a glance at Hiruzen's darkened expression as he walked away.
There was no need to push things further. They hadn't completely fallen out yet, and that was enough—for now.
It wasn't that Natsuhiko lacked the strength to force the issue. Rather, his foundation within Konoha simply wasn't solid enough yet.
Brute force could solve problems, but it also brought complications—far too many of them.
Having once received a comprehensive education in his previous life, having studied the kind of "dragon-slaying arts" of politics that many countries would never openly teach, he understood this principle all too well.
There's still time. I can take this slowly.
With that thought in mind, Natsuhiko left the area without hesitation.
But instead of returning home, he chose to head out of the village.
This battle had been effective—too effective, in fact. It made him realize something important: the strength he possessed under the identity of a "Konoha ninja" was still lacking.
The combat power he displayed in his Nine-Tails mode was undeniably overwhelming. Even without the Flying Thunder God Technique, he could crush his opponents with ease.
In comparison, his strength while acting as a Konoha shinobi felt… somewhat lacking.
Yes, he had the Flying Thunder God Technique. He had Wood Release. He even had the assistance of Lizardmaru.
But deep down, Natsuhiko knew the truth.
The core of his strength came from Sage Mode.
His intermediate Sage Mode already surpassed the Nine-Tails in terms of chakra quality—there was no doubt about that.
Even beings on the level of the Six Paths could ignore ordinary chakra, yet still be injured by senjutsu chakra.
But when it came to sheer quantity… there was simply no comparison.
Especially against ordinary ninja, the difference between senjutsu chakra and normal chakra wasn't that significant in practice.
Under such circumstances, the explosive power and immense reserves of the Nine-Tails' chakra far outclassed Sage Mode.
Which meant one thing:
Improving his Sage Mode was an urgent priority.
More importantly, Sage Mode was the key that amplified all his other abilities. If he wanted to grow stronger overall, he needed to elevate it further.
If I can find the "seed" of advanced senjutsu chakra… and then nurture it using the Ryūmyaku's chakra, which already contains natural energy…
…the results might be far beyond what I expect.
At that thought, Natsuhiko swiftly formed a shadow clone.
The clone gave him a brief nod before heading straight toward the ANBU headquarters, while Natsuhiko himself put on a mask once more. In the next instant, he activated the Flying Thunder God Technique and vanished from where he stood.
…
By dusk, Sora slowly returned to the Uchiha compound.
She still looked somewhat dazed, as if her mind hadn't fully caught up with everything she had experienced that day.
If everything that happened yesterday had felt like a dream—her astonishment at seeing her classmate, still so young, rise to become the Commander of the ANBU—then what she had witnessed today was something far more profound.
It was no longer just surprising.
It was shocking.
At last, she understood why that same classmate had been able to climb to such a position. It wasn't something that could be achieved through strength alone.
It required a clear and calculating mind, bold and daring ideas… and methods that were, frankly, terrifying.
Her classmate had personally killed the former ANBU commander on the night of the Nine-Tails' attack, then secured the support of the Fourth Hokage to ascend to his position.
But even before that, he had already proven his strength—fighting alongside the Hokage to seal the Nine-Tails.
Between eliminating a commander who had refused to act and his performance during the Nine-Tails incident, he had built immense prestige for himself.
It was that reputation, combined with undeniable strength, that had paved the way for his current status.
And yet, to fully control the ANBU—and to strengthen it—he had done far more behind the scenes.
Things that made even Sora feel a chill run down her spine.
This was nothing like the Natsuhiko she remembered—the one who always wore a gentle smile.
It was as if they were two entirely different people.
"Sora… are you alright?"
Just as she returned home in a daze, Uchiha Shin's concerned voice reached her ears.
"…Hm?" She blinked, snapping back to reality before shaking her head lightly. "I'm fine. Just a little…"
"That's good." Shin let out a relieved breath before she could finish. "There was another surge of Nine-Tails chakra in Konoha this afternoon, and since you're in the ANBU, I was worried…"
"Don't worry, Grandpa." By now, Sora had fully composed herself. She forced a small smile. "I won't be assigned to missions like that. I'm safe."
Her words made Uchiha Shin freeze for a moment. Then, as he processed what she had said, his expression shifted—excitement flickering across his face.
If she wasn't being sent on missions, that meant she wasn't part of a frontline combat unit.
And if that was the case… then her safety was far more assured.
Still, there were many non-combat divisions within the ANBU—interrogation, intelligence analysis, administrative work…
He couldn't help but wonder where exactly his granddaughter had been placed.
If—if it was administrative work…
"About your assignment…" After his initial excitement, Shin's tone became cautious, almost tentative. "Can you tell me a little? Of course, if it involves confidentiality, you don't have to say anything."
"I already asked about that," Sora replied, understanding exactly what he wanted to know. "I'm allowed to disclose a little."
Renge had made it very clear—some information could be shared, but never too much.
The ANBU had its own inspection mechanisms. Sora had studied them carefully and understood what "not too much" truly meant.
And Renge had also told her that this decision came directly from Natsuhiko.
"Well?" Shin's body trembled slightly as he tried to keep his emotions in check.
"I work in the administrative division," Sora answered at last. "I'm sorry, Grandpa. I can't say anything more about what I do—that's the rule."
"Hahahaha!"
Uchiha Shin suddenly burst into laughter, his joy completely unrestrained.
For him, that answer alone was more than enough.
Rules were rules. If she couldn't say more, then she wouldn't—and he had no intention of pressing further.
Sora's assignment to the administrative division was something the Uchiha clan hadn't touched in decades—how could Uchiha Shin not feel overjoyed?
Even if it was limited to the ANBU, even if Sora's position wasn't particularly high, it didn't matter.
This alone was enough.
It was the beginning—the first step toward breaking free from the restraints that had bound the Uchiha for so long.
Watching her grandfather's excitement, Sora couldn't help but smile faintly. If he knew what she was truly going to learn… what she would actually be involved in… he would probably be even happier.
But after that joy would come something else.
Pressure—unprecedented pressure.
Sora could already feel it.
The work she was about to undertake would give her access to the core secrets of the ANBU. If anything went wrong, the consequences wouldn't fall on her alone.
Not only would she face severe punishment, but her entire clan might be viewed with suspicion—perhaps even hostility—by the ANBU, or worse, by Konoha itself.
Even so, she had already made her decision.
She would do this properly.
She would not lose this opportunity.
…
"Looks like I came to the right place… though perhaps a bit too late."
Standing in the forest beneath the Valley of the End, Natsuhiko tilted his head slightly, gazing up at the colossal stone statues of Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha. A faint smile tugged at his lips.
The moment he left Konoha, he had come straight here.
In truth, he had passed by this place many times before—but he had never stopped to thoroughly search it.
At first, he hadn't possessed the Flying Thunder God Technique, and later, when he did, he had simply been too busy.
On top of that, before the Nine-Tails incident, he had deliberately held back his strength and avoided coming here altogether.
He had been afraid.
Afraid that if he found what he was looking for, he wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to act on impulse.
Human nature was fragile in that way. Even someone as battle-hardened as Natsuhiko wasn't immune to moments of reckless optimism.
But today was different.
He had made sufficient preparations, and he finally had the time.
That was why he had chosen to come here now.
The results of his search were… acceptable. After all, so much time had passed—there was only so much that could still be found.
"But even so… I got what I wanted."
He quietly brought up his status panel, and a satisfied smile spread across his face.

Natsuhiko studied the panel in silence, unable to suppress the smile that crept onto his face.
Of the five basic chakra natures, he had already obtained Advanced seeds for all except Lightning Release.
Perhaps it was because few people in Konoha specialized in Lightning techniques… or perhaps the one who did hadn't yet fully matured.
Even when he had gone to the battlefield the day after the devastation of the Nine-Tails incident, he hadn't found anything resembling such a seed.
Still, Lightning Release wasn't a major concern.
He could always obtain it from the shinobi of Kumogakure in the future. He had no doubt about that.
As for Yin and Yang Release, his gains had been minimal.
Perhaps his path of growth would ultimately require obtaining fragments of Indra's or Asura's power.
Once he gathered all forms of chakra, the most difficult and dangerous step would begin—
The fusion of these powers, to reach the level of a Kekkei Mōra.
The path Natsuhiko intended to walk was clear: to reclaim the power of the Ōtsutsuki, to unite it with the strength of the Tailed Beasts, and to achieve the ultimate bloodline.
With the foundation he had built, he believed he could accomplish it.
"…But before all that," he murmured softly, "Let's get this Sage Art power under control."
