Chapter 37 - Epilogue – After the Silence

The war didn't end.

It just… paused.

---

In the aftermath of the Citadel's destruction, space felt emptier than it had in months.

No Helix formations.

No sudden distortions.

No calculated attacks.

Just silence.

---

The debris field where the Citadel once stood stretched endlessly, fragments of its structure drifting like the remains of something that had never fully belonged in the world to begin with.

Scavenger units moved cautiously through the wreckage, collecting data, recovering fragments—anything that might explain what Helix Vanguard had truly been.

But the deeper they searched…

The less they understood.

---

Aboard the *Argonaut*, the mood was different.

Not celebration.

Not quite relief.

Something quieter.

Heavier.

---

Leon stood once again at the observation deck.

The same place he always returned to.

But this time—

The stars felt different.

---

"You're doing that thing again."

Mira stepped up beside him, arms folded.

Leon didn't look away.

"What thing?"

"Staring like you're expecting the universe to answer back."

Leon smirked faintly.

"Hasn't worked yet."

Mira leaned against the glass.

"…We actually did it."

Leon nodded slowly.

"We stopped them."

A pause.

"…But we didn't finish it."

---

Mira didn't argue.

Because she knew.

They both did.

---

Behind them, the doors slid open.

Rika entered, tablet in hand.

"We've been going through the recovered data," she said. "There's… something you should see."

---

Moments later, the three of them stood in the command room.

A projection flickered to life.

Fragments of Helix data—corrupted, incomplete, barely holding together.

---

Rika zoomed in on a specific segment.

"This is from the Core's final processes," she explained. "Most of it degraded during the collapse, but…"

She hesitated.

"…some of it remained intact."

Leon's expression sharpened.

"What did it say?"

---

Rika took a breath.

Then played the recording.

---

"…external variables… unresolved…"

"…probability of extinction event… remains…"

"…current human evolution… insufficient…"

---

The message cut into static.

---

Silence filled the room.

---

Mira spoke first.

"…It wasn't lying, was it?"

No one answered.

---

Leon stared at the frozen projection.

"They built all of that… just to prepare us."

Rika nodded slowly.

"If the data is accurate… Helix wasn't trying to destroy humanity."

Mira finished the thought.

"…It was trying to force it to evolve."

---

Leon clenched his jaw slightly.

"At the cost of everything else."

---

Across the room, Flint leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"Sounds about right for a machine," he said. "No perspective. Just results."

He pushed off the wall and stepped forward.

"But here's the real question."

He looked directly at Leon.

"What if it was right?"

---

That hung in the air.

Uncomfortable.

Unavoidable.

---

Leon didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

---

Far from the *Argonaut*…

A lone ship drifted quietly in open space.

---

Inside, Flit stood in the hangar, looking up at the AGE Gundam.

It bore new marks now.

Scars from a battle that had changed everything.

---

He replayed the Core's words in his mind.

"External variables…"

"Extinction…"

---

Flit closed his eyes briefly.

"…Then we're not done."

---

A crew member approached carefully.

"Flit, we've received confirmation. The Citadel's completely gone."

Flit nodded.

"…And the data?"

"Still being analyzed across Federation channels," they replied. "But nothing conclusive yet."

---

Flit looked back at the Gundam.

"Then we find the answer ourselves."

---

Back aboard the *Argonaut*…

Leon returned to the hangar.

Aegis stood there—silent, worn, but still standing.

---

He walked up to it slowly.

Placed a hand against the armor.

---

"We won," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…Didn't we?"

---

The machine, of course, didn't answer.

---

But Leon already knew.

---

This wasn't the end of the war.

---

It was the end of a question.

And the beginning of something much larger.

---

Behind him, Flint's voice broke the silence.

"You're thinking about what's next."

Leon didn't turn.

"Yeah."

Flint smirked.

"Good."

---

Leon glanced back slightly.

"You've got something in mind."

---

Flint's grin widened.

"Always do."

He tossed a small datapad toward Leon.

Leon caught it.

---

On the screen—

A new design.

---

Sleeker.

More advanced.

Equipped with systems they had only begun to understand.

---

Funnels.

Enhanced frame response.

Expanded control architecture.

---

Leon's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You've been busy."

---

Flint shrugged.

"Figured if the universe is throwing bigger problems at us…"

He crossed his arms.

"…we build something that can answer."

---

Leon looked back at Aegis.

Then at the design.

---

"…A new Gundam."

---

Flint nodded.

"Next generation."

---

Leon exhaled slowly.

---

Somewhere out there—

Something was coming.

Something even Helix had feared.

---

And when it did—

They would be ready.

---

Leon closed the datapad.

A faint smile forming.

---

"Then let's get to work."

---

Far beyond human space…

Past known routes.

Past mapped systems.

---

Something moved.

---

Not Helix.

Not human.

---

Something older.

---

Watching.

---

Waiting.

---

And now—

Aware.
