Chapter 48 - Chapter 10 The War Before History

No one aboard the *Argonaut* breathed.

No alarms.

No radio chatter.

Just silence.

Beyond the golden barrier protecting the human fleet, two powers older than civilization itself faced one another across the endless Graveyard.

Harbinger One lowered its crystalline spear.

The Keeper stood unmoving, its golden rings rotating slowly behind its immense frame.

The contrast between them could not have been greater.

Harbinger One radiated absolute precision.

The Keeper radiated quiet patience.

Leon found himself gripping Sentinel's controls.

"They're... not even moving."

Flit answered softly.

"They don't need to."

---

The Keeper spoke first.

"Harbinger."

"You were not created for this."

Harbinger One's voice remained emotionless.

"I was created to preserve existence."

"You preserve order."

The Keeper corrected gently.

"There is a difference."

---

Across the human fleet, every sensor suddenly overloaded.

Rika stared at her display.

"I've lost all telemetry!"

Flint looked over her shoulder.

"No..."

His expression slowly shifted from confusion to astonishment.

"Our instruments aren't failing."

"They've exceeded what we can measure."

---

Without warning—

Harbinger One vanished.

Not with a flash.

Not with teleportation.

It simply ceased to occupy the space it had been standing in.

Leon instinctively looked around.

"Where—"

A shockwave erupted thousands of kilometers away.

The Keeper had caught the crystalline spear in one hand.

Neither giant had appeared to move.

The shockwave alone shattered dozens of drifting wrecks from long-dead civilizations.

Fragments the size of mountains scattered through space.

Mira stared in disbelief.

"...We couldn't even see them."

---

Harbinger One twisted the spear.

Space fractured around the Keeper's arm.

Entire sections of reality peeled away like broken glass.

The Keeper released the weapon and stepped backward.

Golden light flowed from the damaged limb.

Within seconds...

The missing armor reformed.

Leon blinked.

"It regenerated."

"No."

Flint whispered.

"It rewrote itself."

---

The Keeper raised one hand.

One of the golden rings detached from its back.

It floated forward before unfolding into an enormous circular lattice filled with countless glowing symbols.

Harbinger One attacked again.

This time the spear met the lattice.

Instead of exploding...

The energy disappeared.

Completely.

Captain Rolf looked toward Flint.

"What happened?"

"I..."

Flint shook his head.

"I don't know."

---

The Keeper lowered the lattice.

"This technology..."

It looked sadly toward Harbinger One.

"...was once yours."

Harbinger One remained silent.

For the first time...

Its attacks became more aggressive.

Crystalline wings multiplied.

One became six.

Six became thirty-six.

Each spear of crystal folded space around itself before converging on the Keeper simultaneously.

Leon whispered,

"Nothing can survive that."

The Keeper closed its eyes.

Then...

It smiled.

---

Time slowed.

Not for the Keeper.

For everyone else.

Leon watched the impossible unfold.

The golden giant moved.

Not with speed.

With elegance.

Every crystal passed harmlessly around it.

Not because they missed.

Because the Keeper guided each attack away with the smallest possible movement.

It was less a battle...

And more a dance.

---

Flit watched in stunned silence.

"...It's predicting every attack."

"No."

The AGE Device suddenly displayed unfamiliar symbols.

Flit's eyes widened.

"...It's teaching."

---

Back aboard the *Argonaut*, the Helix crystal inside Sentinel began glowing brightly.

Flint immediately noticed.

"It's reacting!"

Rika compared the readings.

"The psycho-frame is synchronizing by itself!"

Leon looked down at his controls.

The cockpit displays were changing.

Complex mathematical patterns filled every monitor.

Then they simplified.

Sentinel's AI spoke.

**"Ancient combat heuristic received."**

Leon frowned.

"What does that mean?"

**"Updating movement prediction algorithms."**

Before Leon could ask another question—

Sentinel moved.

On its own.

Only slightly.

Just enough to mirror one of the Keeper's defensive motions.

---

Flint nearly dropped his tablet.

"...It's learning."

---

The battle intensified.

Harbinger One finally struck the Keeper directly.

The crystalline spear pierced the guardian's chest.

Golden light burst outward.

Mira gasped.

"It got through!"

The Keeper looked down at the wound.

Then back toward Harbinger One.

"You have grown stronger."

Harbinger One answered,

"So have you."

---

The Keeper smiled sadly.

"I have merely grown older."

Golden energy spread through the wound, slowly sealing it.

"But age..."

It looked toward the human fleet.

"...also brings perspective."

---

Suddenly—

The Keeper turned its head toward Leon.

Directly toward Sentinel.

Its voice entered only one cockpit.

**"Leon Ardent."**

Leon froze.

"...How do you know my name?"

**"Because I have waited for someone like you."**

---

Sentinel's cockpit disappeared.

Or at least...

It felt as though it had.

Leon found himself standing in a vast field beneath an unfamiliar sky.

The stars overhead were unlike any he had ever seen.

Before him stood the Keeper.

Not eight kilometers tall.

Simply human-sized.

Its face was no longer hidden behind golden light.

It appeared neither male nor female, its features serene and timeless, with luminous silver eyes that seemed to hold entire galaxies within them.

"Do not be afraid."

Leon looked around.

"...Am I unconscious?"

The Keeper smiled.

"No."

"We are speaking through the psycho-frame."

---

Leon frowned.

"You put those movements into Sentinel."

"I returned something."

The Keeper gently corrected.

"Helix left Humanity the key."

"I have merely shown you how to turn it."

A series of glowing symbols appeared between them.

"They call it the psycho-frame."

"It is not merely a machine."

"It is a bridge."

"A bridge between thought..."

The symbols shifted into images of countless civilizations.

"...and understanding."

---

Back in reality, only a few seconds had passed.

Sentinel's psycho-frame glowed brighter than ever before.

The green light beneath its armor slowly shifted...

To gold.

Harbinger One stopped attacking.

It stared at the white Gundam.

For the first time since Humanity had encountered the Ascendancy...

Its calm voice carried unmistakable surprise.

"...Impossible."

---

Deep within the Ascendancy flagship, alarms echoed across the command chamber.

The Supreme Arbiter stood.

"That energy signature..."

Another officer looked up from the tactical display.

"The Keeper has awakened the inheritance."

The Supreme Arbiter's expression darkened.

"So Helix truly succeeded."

It looked toward the battlefield.

"Humanity has inherited the First Light."

---

The Keeper's voice echoed once more inside Leon's mind.

"The Judgment was never meant to decide who deserved to live."

"It was meant to prepare civilizations to stand together."

"It has been corrupted."

Leon looked into the Keeper's eyes.

"Can it be stopped?"

The Keeper was silent for a long moment.

Then it answered.

"Yes."

"But not by Humanity alone."

Back in space, Harbinger One slowly lowered its spear.

Its glowing eyes remained fixed on Sentinel.

"The evaluation has changed."

Leon felt a chill.

Changed?

Into what?

The answer came not from Harbinger One...

But from the Supreme Arbiter itself, whose voice suddenly echoed across the entire Graveyard.

**"Prepare the Second Judgment."**

**"Humanity will no longer be observed..."**

A pause that seemed to shake the stars themselves.

**"...It will be tested."**
