Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: “Your Runner-Up Title Is a Joke” — Duelist Kingdom Begins

"All right," Kisaragi said casually, as if she were sweeping dust off a table. "Now you've only got a 300 ATK monster left on the field."

Weevil stood there in a daze. Everything that had just happened was too sudden—before he could even react, the formation he'd spent turns building had collapsed completely.

"How boring." Kisaragi lifted her arm. "Let's end this."

The Finisher

"Battle! Bountiful Artemis attacks Centipede!"

Weevil's Life Points dropped.

Weevil LP: 4000 → 2700

"And now—Sky Scourge Sage Minerva and Sky Scourge Enforcer Motius, direct attack!"

"AAAGH!" Weevil screamed as the impact hit him full force.

Weevil LP: 2700 → 0

Kisaragi Aoi wins!

"D-Duel… over! The winner is Kisaragi Aoi!" The referee stared blankly for a moment—he'd expected the finals to drag on, but it ended in a handful of turns, like a guillotine drop.

A Finals That Felt Like a Speedrun

For a beat, the stadium was silent—then the shock hit and voices exploded everywhere.

"Wait… was that really the finals? It's over already?"

"That was so one-sided!"

"Even Joey in the semifinals traded blows with Kisaragi—this Weevil guy couldn't do anything!"

Some spectators were furious.

"I paid that much for tickets just to watch it end in a few turns?!"

"This is all Weevil's fault—he's too weak!"

And after what had happened earlier—his underhanded sabotage—the criticism became outright contempt.

"What a joke. He tried dirty tricks and still got flattened!"

"This 'runner-up' is embarrassing!"

Weevil didn't just lose—he became infamous.

In the VIP seats, Mokuba stared like he'd witnessed a miracle.

"Kisaragi姐姐 is incredible… she won the championship that easily!"

Kaiba snorted.

"Hmph. A bug is a bug. Letting him duel here was an insult to this arena."

Even Pegasus frowned slightly—regretting, for the first time, that he'd ever bothered sending Weevil a Duelist Kingdom invitation.

But at the same time, Pegasus's interest in Kisaragi only deepened. From his perspective, she still hadn't shown her true ceiling—and this Angel deck didn't feel like what she normally relied on.

At Yugi's House

Honda scoffed at the TV.

"That Weevil was pathetic. Joey, I honestly feel like even you could beat him. His 'second place' title is a complete joke!"

"Hey, you punk—why drag me into it?!" Joey snapped back.

Anzu looked to Yugi.

"What do you think, Yugi?"

Yugi's eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

"Kisaragi feels like a fog bank. You can't see where her limit is. The only way to know is to stand across from her in a real duel."

Anzu smiled, half-excited.

"A duel between you and Kisaragi… that would be amazing."

Awards Ceremony: Weevil Runs, Kisaragi Is Crowned

At the ceremony, Weevil couldn't endure the jeers. He slipped away wearing a mask, like a rat fleeing through cracks—hunted by every stare.

Kisaragi stepped up and accepted the trophy from Pegasus himself.

"Miss Kisaragi," Pegasus said, smiling, "your skill truly makes even the father of Duel Monsters see you in a new light."

Kisaragi looked at the man with one eye hidden behind his hair and felt nothing but wariness. In the original story, he might be the early boss—but he was also one of the most oppressive: the power of the Millennium Eye, reading tactics and intent like turning pages.

"Thank you," she replied evenly. "I still have a long way to go."

Pegasus chuckled. "Such humility. But besides this trophy… I have something else for you."

He clapped. A bodyguard in black carried over a box.

Inside was:

A pair of red gloves, each wrist fitted with star-shaped slots

Two gold metal star chips

Two cards: one depicting a treasure-filled chest, the other completely blank

Kisaragi's eyes narrowed slightly.

So it's here… the Duelist Kingdom invitation.

Pegasus Announces Duelist Kingdom

Pegasus took the microphone and addressed the crowd.

"Three days from now, Industrial Illusions will host the Duelist Kingdom Tournament on my private island!"

"All duelists I acknowledge will receive these items: the gloves, two gold star chips, and two cards—proof of entry!"

The audience erupted into chatter.

"Duelist Kingdom? Hosted by Industrial Illusions?"

"I want one of those gloves!"

Kaiba strode forward, voice like a blade.

"Pegasus—what is the meaning of this? Are you trying to make Kisaragi enter your so-called tournament?"

Pegasus smiled, unfazed.

"Correct, Kaiba-boy. Miss Kisaragi is far beyond ordinary tournaments. I want to see her true strength."

Kaiba's stare sharpened.

"It's not that simple. What's your real objective?"

Pegasus ignored the question and continued his announcement.

"The champion of Duelist Kingdom will be recognized by Industrial Illusions as the Duel King."

"And not only a title—there will be a substantial prize."

"And the winner earns the right to duel me—the father of Duel Monsters!"

The crowd ignited.

"That's insane—duel Pegasus himself?!"

Pegasus added, letting the hook sink in:

"And the duelist who defeats me… will receive 60% of Industrial Illusions' shares—becoming the company's largest shareholder."

The arena went wild.

"Fame and fortune!"

"If I could just get invited…"

Pegasus concluded:

"Those who receive these items—assemble at the Duelist Pier in three days. Our private ship will take you to my island."

Then he turned toward Kisaragi.

"Miss Kisaragi—these belong to you. I hope you will participate."

Kisaragi accepted the box without hesitation.

"Of course. I'll join."

Pegasus smiled, satisfied, and departed—while Kaiba continued to watch him with a cold, unblinking intensity.

Afterward: Kaiba's Unease

In the competitors' lounge, Kaiba's brow remained tightly furrowed.

"Kaiba… what's wrong?"

"Nothing," he said curtly. "I just have a bad feeling. Pegasus is hiding another scheme."

"Maybe," Kisaragi replied, looking down at the box. "But if we want the truth, we'll only find it by entering."

At that moment, Mokuba came in.

"Brother, the crowd's almost gone—and the car is here. Let's go home."

"…Fine," Kaiba said. "We'll talk back at the mansion."

And with that, Kaiba led Kisaragi and Mokuba out of the arena—while the shadow of Duelist Kingdom quietly spread over the city.
