"Wow! You seem to be having a great time."
Kurenai's voice carried a light, amused edge as she stepped out from the cover of the forest.
Behind her, Sakura, Hinata, Kiba, and Rin followed in a loose line as their attention quickly shifted forward the moment the scene revealed itself.
What greeted them was… a sight.
Naruto and Sasuke were hung upside down from a thick tree branch, bound at their ankles. Their bodies swayed slightly with breeze, hair falling downward in uneven strands. Both of them wore matching expressions of irritation—though expressed differently.
Naruto's face was scrunched in a deep, stubborn scowl, his cheeks faintly flushed with embarrassment as he avoided looking anywhere near Sasuke. His arms were folded as best as they could be in his position, fingers twitching occasionally with pent-up frustration.
Sasuke, on the other hand, had gone rigidly still. His jaw was set, his expression tight, but the faint tension around his eyes betrayed the same humiliation. He, too, had deliberately turned his gaze away—choosing the opposite direction from Naruto, as if even accidental eye contact would be intolerable.
And then there was Kakashi.
He lay sprawled along that very same branch, completely at ease. One leg was bent lazily, the other stretched out. In his hands—resting casually above his masked face—was a familiar orange book.
Make-Out Paradise.
His attention remained fixed on the page.
Kurenai paused just enough to take in the full picture—the dangling genins, the unbothered jonin—before her earlier comment settled fully into place.
Behind her, the others reacted in their own ways.
Sakura's eyes widened, her gaze darting rapidly between Naruto and Sasuke, disbelief mixing with second-hand embarrassment. Kiba blinked once, then again, as if confirming that what he was seeing was real, his lips already twitching like he was holding back a laugh. Hinata's posture stiffened, her fingers drawing together nervously as she processed the scene in quiet shock.
Rin remained still, as a little bit of guilt settled in.
He had convinced them for a strategy which failed due to lack of time, or more precisely because Naruto wasted more than half of it in attacking Kakashi all on his own.
Either way, not like he could blame Naruto for it.
Above them, Kakashi finally responded.
"Right back at you."
His tone was as relaxed as ever, almost absent-minded. Without any urgency, he let the book slip from its raised position, allowing it to fall and rest loosely against his chest.
Only then did he turn his head slightly, his visible eye shifting toward Kurenai, faintly amused beneath the surface.
After a while, the group had reorganized.
All six of them stood in a line, shoulder to shoulder, the earlier chaos now forced into something resembling order. The arrangement, however, wasn't without its own quiet tension.
Naruto and Sasuke had taken the far ends—standing at opposite edges of the line, as far from each other as possible. Even then, their bodies carried a stiffness that hadn't quite left them.
Naruto's posture was rigid, arms crossed tightly over his chest, his gaze angled off to the side with a lingering scowl.
Sasuke stood straighter, composed on the surface, but there was a faint tightness in his shoulders, his attention deliberately fixed forward—anywhere but toward Naruto.
In front of them, the two jonin stood.
Kakashi, as usual, looked entirely unconcerned, his posture relaxed, while Kurenai observed the group with a measured calm, her eyes subtly moving between each of them.
Rin, positioned next to Sasuke, shifted slightly to lean towards Sasuke.
His head tilted just enough so his voice wouldn't need to carry far.
"What happened between you two?"
The question slipped out plainly.
And instantly, it landed.
The reaction was immediate and impossible to miss.
Sasuke's composure cracked first. A faint flush rose across his face, subtle but unmistakable against his otherwise controlled expression.
"Mind you own business..."
His eyes flickered as he whispered to Rin.
At the same time, Naruto flinched.
A similar heat crept across his face, his earlier irritation now tangled with something far more awkward. His gaze shifted abruptly, anywhere but forward, anywhere but toward the center of attention that had just formed.
The shift didn't go unnoticed.
Everyone's attention snapped toward them—drawn with the question.
And Kakashi saw it.
A quiet chuckle escaped him. Without a word, he lifted his book just enough for it to be visible—angling it outward slightly.
Make-Out Paradise.
Then, with a casual motion, he tapped lightly against the title.
The gesture was small.
But it was enough.
Rin's eyes caught it.
And in that exact instant, realization hit.
There was a split second—just one—where he processed it.
Then he broke.
A laugh burst out of him, sudden and uncontrollable, cutting straight through the air as he tried—and failed—to hold it back.
"No… way…—Hhaaha—"
His shoulders shook as he struggled to contain it, one hand instinctively coming up as if that alone could stop the laughter spilling out. It didn't work. The more he tried to suppress it, the worse it became.
Naruto and Sasuke both turned toward him at the same time.
Their irritation was immediate and sharp—eyes narrowed, expressions darkened, the earlier embarrassment now flaring into something far more defensive under the Rin's reaction.
Rin, however, kept laughing.
He bent forward slightly at the waist, breath catching between bursts, still trying to regain control.
"Alright…—"
He managed between breaths, voice breaking under the strain of holding it in.
"—that definitely wasn't part of the strategy… Haha— Like how? Why? —Haha"
"What's going on here?"
Kiba's voice cut in, edged with confusion as he looked from one person to another, clearly missing whatever had just passed between them.
"Did something happen?"
Sakura followed immediately, her tone carrying the same uncertainty. Her gaze flickered between Naruto, Sasuke, and Rin, trying to read the tension lingering in their faces, the embarrassment that neither Naruto nor Sasuke seemed capable of hiding despite their efforts.
In front of them, Kakashi's visible eye curved faintly, a smile forming beneath his mask.
Beside him, Kurenai had reached the same conclusion.
The moment understanding settled in, she facepalmed herself as a faint blush had already spread across her cheeks, second-hand embarrassment settling deep.
Rin, meanwhile, was still trying—and failing—to contain his laughter.
"Haha—Hmm… You don't get it…? Haha—"
His voice came out uneven, broken by lingering laughter as he turned slightly toward Kiba and Sakura.
"These two lovers kis—MMHHH!"
He didn't get to finish.
"Shut it!"
"Bastard!"
Naruto and Sasuke moved at the exact same moment.
There was no hesitation—no pause for thought. Both of them lunged, their earlier embarrassment from each other forgotten entirely as they closed in on Rin.
Their hands shot out simultaneously, clamping over his mouth before the words could fully leave it.
Their feet tangled and the trio went down in a rough heap against the ground.
Naruto and Sasuke ended up half over Rin, still pressing their hands firmly over his mouth, their faces flushed deeply with embarrassment, irritation flaring sharp in their eyes.
Rin, despite being pinned beneath them, was still laughing.
The sound came out muffled now, trapped behind their hands, but it was unmistakable—his shoulders still shaking beneath their grip.
"You guys seem pretty relaxed for a bunch who didn't snatch a single bell…"
Kakashi's voice finally cut through the lingering chaos, calm and measured, yet carrying just enough weight to bring everything to a halt.
His gaze settled on the three bodies tangled on the ground.
The effect was immediate.
Naruto and Sasuke stiffened.
The reminder hit.
The bells.
Failure.
Both of them pulled back, hands dropping away from Rin as the realization settled in fully. The irritation and embarrassment that had driven them just moments ago gave way to something heavier. Without a word, they pushed themselves up from the ground.
Rin, however, didn't follow immediately.
He remained where he was, lying on the ground for a second longer. Then, casually, he shifted—one leg crossing over the other before he drew himself up into a seated position.
His posture was loose, unbothered, with a slight curve of his smile.
He tilted his head upward, directing his attention toward Kakashi.
"Well, yeah… but we still passed, right?"
His voice came out lighter than the situation might have called for, still carrying traces of amusement.
As he spoke, he lifted a hand, brushing lightly beneath his blindfold where a tear had slipped through—drawn out from laughing just a little too hard moments earlier.
Kakashi's eye rested on him.
"And why do you think you all passed?"
The question came without pause. There was no dismissal in it—but no confirmation either.
Though there was a quiet acknowledgment behind his gaze, he was impressed with how level-headed Rin was, yet he didn't let it show beyond that.
Rin wasn't the only one standing there. Whatever answer came now had to exist beyond a single perspective.
Rin started to respond.
His mouth parted slightly, the beginning of an answer forming, but he stopped.
He closed his mouth again, the initial response held back, as he began to reconsider his answer.
Instead of speaking right away, he pushed himself up from the ground, rising to his feet.
Now standing, he faced Kakashi directly.
"A true Shinobi seeks…for the hidden meanings within hidden meanings."
As Rin spoke, the weight of his words didn't just settle on Kakashi—it rippled outward.
Kakashi's gaze shifted, subtle but deliberate, moving past Rin to the rest of the group. He caught it immediately—the way their eyes turned toward Rin. Pieces were falling into place for them now, connections being made in hindsight.
And Kakashi understood.
Sakura hadn't been with Naruto and Sasuke earlier.
Because she had gone to find Hinata and Kiba.
The intent was clear now. Whether it was to coordinate an attack on a single jonin or to create a three-on-one situation to increase their chances of taking a bell, or to simply keep the jonin's from teaming up, it didn't matter. The decision itself had been quick, made under pressure, executed within limited time.
And now, standing here, with Rin's answer spoken aloud…
It was obvious who had seen through the test first.
A faint smile touched Kakashi's face.
He turned his head slightly toward Kurenai.
She met his glance and gave a small, knowing nod.
Kakashi turned back to the genin.
"Correct. You all… pass."
The words dropped cleanly into the space between them.
"Hell Yeah!"
Sakura's face lit up instantly, relief and excitement surging through her as she stepped forward with a small jump, unable to contain it.
"I did it! I'm a Shinobi!"
Naruto reacted just as quickly—his earlier frustration completely gone as he threw his arms up, a grin breaking across his face.
"We got it! Akamaru!"
Kiba followed, energy snapping back into him as he celebrated alongside them
Rin, however, remained composed.
"Was there ever a scenario where only four of us would pass?"
He asked, even though he already knew.
He just wanted to hear it.
"No. It was either you all pass, or you all fail."
Kakashi answered.
And it settled things completely.
Rin moved without looking away.
He extended his palm outward—toward Naruto.
The gesture was simple. Expectant.
Naruto flinched at Rin's teasing smile.
The reaction was immediate, his body tensing as realization hit him again—this time from a completely different angle. The excitement on his face faltered, replaced by a mix of embarrassment and reluctant acceptance.
"…Tch."
Grumbling under his breath, he reached into his pocket, pulling out the money with visible reluctance. His movements were slower now, weighed down by the sting of having lost.
He placed it into Rin's waiting hand.
Rin took it without hesitation.
Rin had made a bet that he was right in order to convince Naruto to join the plan.
Which Naruto began to regret now.
"The test's meaning was to see if you're capable of making your own decisions instead of following everything I say like mindless puppets."
Kakashi spoke, his gaze moved across each of them as he spoke, making sure the words landed, that they were understood.
The group had quieted completely now.
The earlier excitement, the laughter, even Naruto's complaints—they had all faded into stillness under the weight of what was being said.
"As Rin said, a true Shinobi seeks for the hidden meanings within hidden meanings."
Kakashi's eye shifted upward, his head tilting slightly as his attention drifted toward the open sky.
"In the Shinobi world, those who violate rules and fail to follow orders… are treated as scums."
The statement was blunt.
Unfiltered.
Kurenai's expression changed.
Standing beside him, her gaze moved toward Kakashi, concern flickering subtly in her eyes. There was recognition there—of what he was saying, of where it came from—and a quiet unease at how plainly he chose to put it.
Kakashi didn't look at her.
He continued.
"However…
…those who abandon their friends…are worse than scum."
The words settled heavily.
Naruto froze where he stood, his gaze fixed forward as the words sank in.
Rin, too, went still.
For the first time his expression lost that easy lightness.
Kurenai stepped forward.
"Alright, the test is now concluded. You all pass."
Her voice broke the stillness.
"That's all for today. Team 7 and Team 8… your duties will commence tomorrow."
The declaration marked the end of it.
And just like that, the moment transitioned.
As Kurenai declared it, a small, satisfied smile resting on her face, the atmosphere finally loosened completely.
One by one, the group shifted, turning away as the moment naturally came to an end.
Naruto moved first.
Without warning, his hand shot out, grabbing Rin by the back of his collar. The grip was sudden, leaving no room for resistance before he turned and started dragging him along.
"WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE AT ICHIRAKU!!!"
His voice burst out loud and full of energy.
Rin didn't resist.
His body followed the pull easily, hands still tucked casually into his pockets even as he was dragged along. His posture remained relaxed despite being hauled by Naruto.
"You're just trying to get the money back from the bet, aren't you?"
Rin spoke, the accusation slipping out as he tilted his head slightly in Naruto's direction.
Naruto ignored him completely.
Rin let out a quiet breath through his nose, the faintest hint of a smile still lingering as he allowed himself to be dragged along without protest.
As the clearing emptied and the last traces of chatter faded into the distance, only Kakashi and Kurenai remained.
They walked side by side, the forest path stretching ahead of them in quiet calm.
"So, did you notice anything?"
Kurenai's voice broke the silence, her gaze angled slightly toward Kakashi.
"Not a thing."
The response came simply.
"If I hadn't known already about his condition, I could... never have guessed…"
There was no exaggeration in his tone—only quiet acknowledgment.
"He seemed just like he shows… a young talent and... full of life."
Kurenai listened, her expression softening just slightly at that.
"Well, that's good, right?"
She replied, though she quickly followed it up, her voice turning more practical.
"I don't mean it that way. But missions can be dangerous, and having a liability around would've been a very exhausting task."
Her words carried a layer of realism that neither of them could ignore.
Even if genin were rarely sent into truly lethal situations, the nature of their world didn't guarantee safety. Things could escalate. Situations could shift. And in those moments, even a small weakness could become critical.
As they continued walking, Kurenai's thoughts drifted—pulling her back to a specific moment during the test.
The genjutsu.
She had trapped them all within it. It hadn't been anywhere near her strongest illusion, but more than enough for fresh graduates to remain caught without outside interference.
And yet…
They had broken out.
Her memory sharpened.
She saw it again in her mind—the exact sequence.
She also remembered the kunai she saw near the spot where the genins were trapped in genjutsu.
It all lead to one conclusion.
That before attacking her, Rin had thrown a kunai—chakra imbued into it. At Sakura's feet. The impact had triggered a small burst—not destructive, but disruptive.
Just enough.
The chakra disturbance had spread outward, interfering with the flow within those caught in the genjutsu.
It was a simple solution.
But not an obvious one.
And certainly not something most fresh graduates would think to do—let alone execute with that level of timing and control.
Kurenai's gaze narrowed slightly as she recalled it, the faintest trace of impressed concern settling beneath her calm exterior.
It hadn't been a high-level genjutsu.
But that wasn't the point.
Understanding how to disrupt it—and acting on it in the moment—that was what stood out.
And Rin had done it without hesitation.
'The missions going forward are going to be real interesting...'
Both Kakashi and Kurenai thought with a quiet smile.
Ready for the eventful days which are gonna follow from tomorrow.
