Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

Marineford, the headquarters of the Marines

stood as a monumental symbol of power and justice.

Located within the first half of the Grand Line, it formed a strategic triangle alongside Enies Lobby and Impel Down, the Great Underwater Prison.

Massive Gates of Justice controlled the currents surrounding these three strongholds, generating a government-controlled vortex system that allowed only authorized vessels to pass safely.

From above, Marineford's geography resembled a crescent moon.

A natural fortress.

The island was not solely a military bastion.

Beyond its colossal battlements, artillery emplacements, and training grounds, Marineford housed residential districts.

Homes.

Families.

Children of Marines.

The headquarters' main structure was carved directly into the island's mountainous terrain, creating layers of defensive advantage against large-scale assaults.

A design born from centuries of warfare.

At that moment, within the Fleet Admiral's Office, the highest-ranking figures of the Marines had assembled.

Fleet Admiral Sengoku.

Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp.

Vice Admiral Tsuru.

Admirals.

And the former Admiral turned instructor

Zephyr, known across the seas as "Black Arm" Zephyr.

The reason for this rare gathering:

A Celestial Dragon seeking entry into the Marines.

"Are the World Nobles planning to tighten their leash around us?"

The speaker was Monkey D. Garp, his arms crossed, expression grim.

"I doubt it."

Zephyr's voice remained steady.

"It would be absurd for the World Government to send a teenage girl as a political overseer."

Garp snorted.

"Since when have those bubble-wearing aristocrats behaved rationally?"

"Garp."

Sengoku's tone sharpened.

"Mind your words."

"They are still Celestial Dragons."

Garp laughed loudly.

"Hahaha! Did I mention Celestial Dragons?"

"I was clearly talking about bubble-headed fools!"

Sengoku sighed, already imagining the paperwork should such remarks be reported.

Vice Admiral Tsuru finally intervened.

"We are speculating without evidence."

"A period of observation is the most logical course."

Sengoku nodded slowly.

"…Agreed."

"However, security is paramount."

"Nothing must happen to a Celestial Dragon within Marine jurisdiction."

A low, firm voice followed.

"As long as it does not interfere with justice, I have no objections."

Admiral Sakazuki spoke without hesitation.

No one expected warmth from him.

Only certainty.

Saint Roselith Seraphina had originally intended to join through the standard Marine recruitment process.

Unfortunately, the enlistment period had already closed.

After inquiries at the registration counter, only one viable option remained:

The Marine Special Training Camp.

An elite internal selection program.

Thus Seraphina and Bruce submitted their applications.

Her Celestial Dragon identity remained concealed.

Yet even without disclosure…

The paperwork reached Sengoku's desk.

Victor Roselith's silent influence ensured that much.

Sengoku reviewed the documents carefully.

Then requested a status update on Victor Roselith.

"Everything remains normal."

"But Saint Seraphina's safety must be guaranteed."

"…What are they planning now?"

Sengoku muttered.

Still

He approved the applications.

At least this Celestial Dragon had chosen dignity.

No forced commission.

No political insertion.

She had applied to begin as a Sergeant candidate.

The Marine Special Training Camp existed for one purpose:

To forge exceptional soldiers.

Its chief instructor:

Black Arm Zephyr.

Entry requirements were notoriously severe.

Physical endurance.

Combat aptitude.

Written examinations on Marine tactics and strategy.

When Seraphina stepped forward for testing, few paid attention.

Until

"Impact force… 5000?!"

The Marine Major monitoring the instrument nearly dropped his clipboard.

The white-haired girl stood calmly before the reinforced striking machine.

Unbothered.

Whispers rippled across the testing area.

"That can't be right…"

"Check the calibration!"

"Is the device malfunctioning?!"

Yet repeated diagnostics confirmed the result.

The Major stared at her.

This girl looked younger than his own child.

Yet her strike dwarfed his own several times over.

And the anomalies did not end there.

Reaction speed.

Stamina.

Precision.

All outstanding.

Then came the written examination.

Seraphina studied Marine tactical theory for only a few days.

Perfect score.

Within Sengoku's office, the results arrived before public announcement.

"…Unbelievable."

He scanned the data repeatedly.

A Devil Fruit?

A genetic anomaly?

"…Or something else entirely?"

Still

Nothing violated regulations.

Nothing justified rejection.

Thus Seraphina and Bruce entered the Special Training Camp.

This year's instructional staff remained largely unchanged.

Zephyr continued his supervision.

The deputy instructor, however, drew immediate attention.

A tall Marine wearing a white vest over a dark blue shirt.

Relaxed posture.

Half-lidded gaze.

Admiral candidate Kuzan.

Better known as

Aokiji.

User of the Logia-type Ice-Ice Fruit (Hie Hie no Mi).

"Listen up, recruits."

Kuzan's lazy voice drifted across the formation.

"You can call me Instructor Aokiji."

A pause.

"I sincerely hope all of you survive long enough to complain about the training."

Murmurs.

Unease.

"Now then…"

"Thirty-kilometer warm-up."

Groans erupted instantly.

"Move."

Zephyr's voice cracked like thunder.

Seraphina and Bruce blended effortlessly into the running formation.

For Bruce, this regime was mild compared to CP0 conditioning.

For Seraphina…

It barely qualified as exercise.

Days passed peacefully.

Almost disappointingly so.

Until

"Hm."

Seraphina suddenly accelerated.

Then lightly tapped the Marine ahead of her.

"You there."

Smoker turned, irritation flashing.

"…Who are you calling 'you there'?"

Seraphina smiled faintly.

"The large smoking chimney in front of me."

"…Chimney?!"

Smoker's eyebrow twitched.

"Even if you're a woman, that's"

He turned fully.

Then froze.

"…Ah."

Words failed him.

Before him stood an impossibly beautiful silver-haired girl.

Eyes gently closed.

Expression serene.

Smoker's face flushed violently.

"…W-well…"

He cleared his throat awkwardly.

"I suppose I can overlook it…"

Nearby Marines, already gasping for breath, stared in disbelief.

There's someone like THAT in this batch?!

Morale surged instantly.

Seraphina tilted her head.

"You run."

"You smoke."

A playful pause.

"What else would you be if not a chimney?"

Smoker coughed.

Struggling between dignity and embarrassment.

"…Smoker."

He finally replied.

"User of the Smoke-Smoke Fruit (Moku Moku no Mi)."

His earlier annoyance had evaporated completely.

Replaced by youthful fascination.

And Seraphina

Smiled.

Somewhere deep within her consciousness

A familiar presence stirred.
