Chapter 137: Battle at Gym
After a brief exchange, Ash and the others learned the identity of the little girl.
She was Mahri, the younger sister of Rudy, the Gym Leader of Trovita Gym.
As the boat docked, Mahri's brother, accompanied by several people, was already waiting on the shore.
"Mahri!"
Upon seeing him, Mahri ran quickly into her brother's arms: "Brother!"
"I've been looking for you for so long!"
"I'm sorry!"
"Thank you all, I really don't know how to thank you!" Rudy bowed to Ash and the others in gratitude.
He had witnessed the entire rescue of Mahri from the shore and truly couldn't distinguish which of the two identical Gardevoir was Mahri's savior.
Ash didn't want his girlfriend to get too close to strangers, so he secretly signaled his two Gardevoir to guard Serena and Misty tightly, giving him no opportunity at all.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Misty stated her purpose: "We're here to challenge the Gym, Rudy. Are you available now?"
"Challenge the Gym? Yes, but you'll need to pass a move test first. Are all of you challengers?" Rudy asked.
If all four of Ash's group were challengers, it would be a lot of work.
"No, I'm the one challenging the Orange League; they are all my companions," Misty explained.
Before long, Ash and the others were led to a river.
"For the move test, you need to use your Pokémon to smash targets that pop up along the way. Each target only gets one chance."
"Alright, I'm counting on you, Kingdra."
Misty chose Kingdra, known for its strong aiming abilities.
"Move test, ready, begin!"
With the referee's command, the small boat carrying Ash and the others floated downstream.
"Kingdra, Water Gun ready!"
Misty reminded.
"Hechi!"
Kingdra nodded, its eyes becoming sharp.
A target popped up on the bank. Kingdra shot out a rapid stream of water, easily shattering it.
One, two... From popping up to being shattered, each target took an average of less than three seconds.
After the move test, Rudy said, "The rules for the Gym challenge are a three-on-three battle, and we'll schedule it for tomorrow."
"No problem!" Misty nodded.
.....
Early the next morning.
Ash and his two companions rode in the Trovita Gym's hot air balloon, arriving above the battle arena.
Meanwhile, Misty and Rudy stood at the positions where Trainers should stand.
"Miss Misty, my first Pokémon is—Electabuzz!"
Rudy was the first to send out his battle Pokémon.
"An Electric-type Pokémon? Omastar, I'm counting on you!"
Misty sent out the fossil Pokémon she had caught earlier in Grampa Valley. The Omanyte she originally caught had evolved after reaching the Orange Islands.
"Electabuzz, use Quick Attack."
"Omastar, use Mud Shot!"
Omastar spat mud at the rapidly approaching Electabuzz. After missing three times, a blob of mud accurately hit Electabuzz's face. With mud in its eyes, Electabuzz had to stop its attack and vigorously shake the mud off its face.
"Now, Omastar, use Hydro Pump!"
Seizing the advantage, Omastar's Hydro Pump instantly knocked out Electabuzz.
The skill level of Trainers in the Orange Islands was inherently lower than in other regions. The Electabuzz Rudy sent out was only at the early stages of the Excellent-Advanced level, while Misty's Omastar, though having battled less, had long since stabilized its strength at the Gym-Mid level.
After deciding to participate in the Orange League, Misty also asked Ash to help her Pokémon with special training. Under the guidance of Pikachu and Gardevoir, the strength of the Pokémon Misty carried had significantly increased. Therefore, it was very natural and reasonable for Omastar to defeat Electabuzz despite the type disadvantage.
"The winner of the first match is Misty from Cerulean City."
"Exeggutor, I'm counting on you!"
For the second match, Rudy sent out the Grass/Psychic-type Exeggutor.
Exeggutor's level was slightly better than Electabuzz's, at the Gym Beginner standard.
After recalling Omastar, Misty said, "Kingdra, this match is yours!"
"Exeggutor, use Seed Machine Gun!"
"Kingdra, use Dragon Breath!"
The green energy bullets spat out by Exeggutor were directly blown away by the powerful breath exhaled by Kingdra.
The attack didn't work, so Rudy gave another command: "Exeggutor, use Egg Bomb!"
Exeggutor fired several white energy bombs into the sky from its head.
These energy bombs fell towards Kingdra.
"Kingdra, use Whirlpool to return the Egg Bombs to it!"
Receiving the command, Kingdra tilted its head back and created a water vortex, catching each of the energy bombs thrown by Exeggutor and then returning them.
Seeing the water vortex flying towards it, Exeggutor panicked greatly.
Rudy quickly shouted: "Exeggutor, Protect!"
At the last moment, Exeggutor deployed a barrier, blocking Kingdra's Whirlpool, but it failed to block its own Egg Bomb attack and still sustained considerable damage.
"This is tough. Exeggutor, Mega Drain!"
"Kingdra, don't give it a chance! Use Dragon Pulse to finish it!"
With the final Dragon Pulse launched, it was time for Exeggutor to withdraw.
Of course, if Misty had simply let Kingdra unleash powerful moves from the start, Exeggutor would probably have been eliminated much earlier, as there was a significant difference in their overall power levels. But considering that the opponent was also a Gym Leader, Misty still gave Rudy enough face and didn't defeat him with two quick, flawless moves.
Seeing his opponent's two consecutive losses, Misty asked, "Rudy, do you still want to continue the last match?"
"No need, Miss Misty. Your skill level has far surpassed mine. This gym badge belongs to you."
Rudy handed the Gym gym badge to Misty.
