Chapter 6 - Chapter 6. My Friends

The transition from the manicured, stone-cold opulence of the palace to the raw, breathing heart of the forest felt like a return to life for Selene. As they crossed the invisible boundary into the deep timber, the air grew thick with the scent of damp earth, pine resin, and the wild, ancient magic that had sustained her for nine years.

Beside her, King Axe slowed his pace. The air around him began to distort, a physical manifestation of the power coiling within his muscles. With a sound like the snap of a whip, he shifted. One moment he was a man; the next, a mountain of shadow stood where he had been. His wolf was a terrifying marvel- easily twice the size of a standard Alpha. His fur was so profoundly black that it seemed to absorb the dappled sunlight, a void in the shape of a predator that looked like a tear in the fabric of space itself.

The giant beast turned his head, his snout gently tapping Selene's arm. The touch was a question, an invitation to join him in the skin he preferred.

"Your wolf is beautiful," Selene hummed, her voice a soft vibration in the quiet glade. She ran her fingers through the thick, coarse fur of his neck. To any other creature, that coat would feel like a mesh of razor blades, a warning of the violence he was capable of, but under her touch, it felt like velvet.

The wolf tapped her again, more insistently this time, a playful huff of air escaping his lungs.

"Okay, okay, I hear you," she chuckled.

Selene closed her eyes and let the internal heat take over. Her bones shifted and lengthened with a grace that few could manage. When the light faded, a massive white wolf stood in the clearing, her fur the color of a fresh snowfall under a full moon. While Axe was the abyss, Selene was the light. Her eyes, a swirling mix of sky-blue and violet, locked onto his dark ones.

She nudged his snout with her own, her tail giving a single, happy wag. Though her wolf was a creature of silence and power, the bond between them hummed like a live wire. She felt the thrill of the chase ignite in her blood. With a playful wink of her blue eye, Selene turned and bolted into the thicket, a streak of white lightning.

Axe let out a low, guttural bark of delight and lunged after her.

They tore through the forest like twin spirits of the wild. They leaped over moss-covered logs and weaved through the labyrinth of ancient oaks with a synchronized rhythm that only fated mates could possess. Every time Axe drew close enough to nip at her heels, Selene would put on a burst of speed, her paws barely touching the earth.

They were a blur of monochrome- black and white dancing through the emerald green of the woods.

As they reached the old, cracked road that marked the edge of her territory, Selene slowed. She ducked behind the massive trunk of a cedar tree and shifted back into her human form.

"We're almost there," she called out, poking her head from behind the tree. Axe remained in his wolf form, his tongue lolling out of his mouth as he panted, his eyes fixed on her. "You have to turn around now. I need to make something to wear. No peeking!"

The King's wolf gave a slow, knowing blink and turned his massive body away, sitting on his haunches like a loyal sentinel.

Selene hurried. Moving with practiced ease, she gathered broad, supple leaves and a handful of sturdy vines. Using her magic, she wove the molecular structure of the plants together until she had a simple, breathable tunic and shorts. She even fashioned a pair of leaf-shorts for Axe, knowing he couldn't walk into her sanctuary in his birthday suit once he shifted back.

"You can turn around now," she said, stepping out from the shadows.

Axe shifted back, the sheer power of his transition making the leaves on the ground swirl. He caught the leaf-shorts she tossed him with a grin, sliding them on before standing tall. He looked out of place in the wild, his tattoos and rugged handsomeness clashing with the peaceful green of the clearing.

"Everyone, I'm home!" Selene called out, her voice projecting into the trees.

For a heartbeat, the forest stayed still. Then, the silence began to break.

Axe watched in silent, slack-jawed shock as the woods began to move. It wasn't just a few animals; it was a horde. From the hollows of trees and the shadows of the brush, the wildlife appeared.

A herd of deer, led by the snow-white Lily, stepped into the clearing. Squirrels chattered as they descended from the canopy in droves. Birds of every color- blue jays, cardinals, and tiny sparrows, swirled down like living confetti. They gathered in a wide, perfect circle around Selene, their eyes filled with a trust that Axe had never seen in any living creature.

Selene sat on a stump, a small sparrow- Joan, landing immediately on her index finger.

"Joan, did you know it's possible to have two mates?" Selene asked the bird, her tone conversational and light. "This is one of them. The Lycan King."

The entire circle of animals shifted their gaze to Axe. The King, who had faced down armies and stared into the eyes of death without blinking, suddenly felt incredibly self-conscious.

"Um... hello?" he muttered, standing stiffly as a rabbit hopped over his foot.

Selene stood up and walked toward him, the animals parting for her like water. Joan stayed perched on her finger. "My King- "

"Axe," he corrected her instantly, his hand finding her waist and drawing her close. He needed the contact, the reminder that she was real and not some forest hallucination. "Call me Axe, little wolf."

"Axe," she smiled, her eyes twinkling. "This is Joan." She gently transferred the bird to his finger.

Axe held his breath, staring at the tiny, fragile life resting on his scarred hand. He had killed men with these hands; he had torn apart monsters. To hold something so small and delicate was a revelation.

"And this is Lily," Selene continued, petting the albino doe who had tucked her head under Selene's hand. "And these are Luca and Happy."

Two squirrels scrambled up Selene's leg, while a third, more portly squirrel decided to scale Axe's leg. It perched on his forearm, sitting up on its haunches and letting out a series of high-pitched, angry-sounding squeaks.

"Oh, that's Grouchy," Selene giggled. "He's the self-appointed guardian of the perimeter. He's very protective."

Grouchy seemed to be giving the King a stern lecture, his little paws gesturing wildly. Axe looked at the squirrel, then at Selene, who was glowing with a radiant, unburdened love as she introduced him to her "family."

Grouchy stopped mid-squeak. He leaned forward, sniffed Axe's thumb, and then looked the King in the eye. The squirrel gave a single, solemn nod of his head, as if to say, 'You'll do. Don't mess this up.'

Axe couldn't help it; he let out a genuine, booming laugh. He reached out with his free hand and gave the squirrel a tiny, two-fingered pet on the head. "I like you, Grouchy. You've got spirit."

"Now you all, be nice to him while I pack up my things," Selene said sternly to the animals.

She disappeared into her cottage, leaving the King of the Lycans standing in a field surrounded by a silent, watchful audience of forest creatures. He spent the next twenty minutes being inspected by a curious fox and watched by an owl, realizing for the first time that the "White Wolf" wasn't just a threat to his throne- she was the heartbeat of the world he was supposed to protect.

When Selene emerged, she was carrying a small, weathered canvas bag containing her few meaningful possessions- a hand-carved comb, a tattered book of poetry, and the small wooden wolf her father had carved for her when she was a child.

She looked at the animals, her bottom lip trembling. "I wish I could take you all with me," she sighed, the sadness raking through her. "But I can't take a whole forest. There wouldn't be enough room."

Axe stepped forward, dropping the bird-holding hand to take her bag. He looked at the vast circle of animals, then back at the woman who had lived in isolation to keep them safe.

"If you stay with me," Axe said, his voice deep and echoing with the weight of a royal decree, "you can have as many friends stay on the palace lands as you'd like. My gardens are vast, and the royal forest has been empty for too long."

Selene's eyes widened, shimmering with unshed tears. "Really? You would let them stay?"

"Of course," Axe smiled, pulling her into the crook of his arm. "If they are dear to your heart, they are under my protection. I'll do anything to keep that smile on your face, Selene."

"Thank you," she whispered, her heart thumping a frantic, happy rhythm against her ribs.

The journey back was a strange, beautiful procession. They didn't run this time. They walked, a king and his queen leading a literal army of animals across the road and through the gates of the palace.

Axe stayed true to his word. He led the animals to the massive, overgrown royal gardens they had visited that morning. "You all can stay here," he told the animals as they began to explore the hidden nooks of the wisteria and the rosebushes. "I'll have the palace architects build shelters- elegant ones, so you'll never have to worry about the winter again."

Selene stood amidst her friends, watching as Lily began to graze on the lush palace grass. She couldn't help but wonder about Nik. Would the Alpha of a rugged mountain pack have been this accommodating? Or would he have expected her to leave her past behind?

Before she could dwell on it, a messenger approached, bowing low. "Sire, the Mighty Seven are assembled for the strategic briefing."

Axe let out a frustrated sigh, his eyes darkening as he turned back to Selene. He reached out and pulled her into a tight, possessive embrace, burying his face in the crook of her neck. He inhaled deeply, the scent of the forest and her own sweet skin acting like a drug to his restless soul.

"I'm being called to a meeting," he muttered against her skin, his voice a low vibration that made her toes curl. He leaned in, his lips pressing a slow, searing kiss against the sensitive cord of her neck.

Tingles exploded through Selene's body, her knees going weak as the mating bond flared in response to his touch. A small, involuntary moan caught in her throat.

"Feel free to go where you want, my Queen," Axe whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "The palace is yours. But... if you could, stay within the walls. I don't want to spend my meeting worrying about where my heart has wandered."

He kissed her one last time- a lingering, promise-filled touch, before turning to follow the messenger.

Selene stood in the garden, surrounded by her forest friends and the lingering scent of a mad king who was slowly becoming her world. She touched the spot on her neck where his lips had been, her heart racing. One day down, six more to go... and she was already starting to fear what would happen when this week ended.
