Chapter 62 - Megan- 2

The air in the King's office was thick with the scent of old parchment, heavy cedar, and the sharp, metallic tang of raw Lycan power. Megan stood near the back of the group, her large, curvaceous frame making her a head taller than most of the furniture, though she felt like a colorful splash of paint against the somber stone walls. She was fiddling with a loose thread on her sleeve, her red ringlets bouncing as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

At the center of the room, King Leo stood like a mountain range in silk, his presence demanding every ounce of gravity in the room. Beside him, Queen Selene sat on the edge of the mahogany desk, her legs swinging slightly, looking less like a monarch and more like a little girl with a very big secret.

"I asked Leo a question this morning," Selene started, her voice bright and melodic, cutting through the heavy silence. "I asked him when the last time he- or anyone from this kingdom, actually traveled to the other packs and neighboring kingdoms to see if they wanted any changes to the treaty. Apparently, it's been a couple of hundred years!"

Megan blinked her hazel eyes, a wide grin spreading across her face. A couple of hundred years? That sounded like a whole lot of stagnant paperwork and missed gossip.

"So," Selene continued, her purple-and-white eyes shimmering, "we've got a mission for you all!"

Leo stepped forward, unfolding several scrolls with a crisp, authoritative snap. Megan felt the familiar hum of duty vibrate in her chest, but this felt different. This wasn't a war mission. This wasn't about collapsing tunnels or crushing rebellions. This was... diplomacy?

"Drew, Jax," Leo said, his voice a deep rumble as he handed a paper to the two blonde men. "You're visiting the Western and Northern packs. Check the borders, hear their grievances, and remind them that the Crown is listening."

Jax smirked, elbowing Drew. "Road trip," he whispered, earning a dry look from the King.

"Megan, Christian," Leo continued, turning his gaze toward her. Megan stood a little straighter, her earth-bending spirit leaning into the floorboards. "You're heading to the Vampire Kingdom. It's been far too long since we've had a formal presence in the Sanguine Courts. Ensure the blood-trade treaties are still favorable and that no rogue covens are pushing their luck."

Megan's grin widened. The Vampire Kingdom. It was dark, it was gothic, and the fashion was always top-tier. She looked over at Christian, who was already scowling as if the thought of sunlight-deprived aristocrats was a personal insult.

"Leah and John," Leo finished, handing the final scroll to the fire-bender and the telekinetic. "You're visiting the Witches' Covens. Keep your wits about you. Witches have a way of twisting words that even John's mind can't always unknot. Each of you take as long as you like. Just come back when we call."

The room hummed with a sudden, restless energy. For the Seven, being stationary for too long was like holding a coiled spring. Megan felt a surge of excitement. She loved the Palace, but she loved the road even more.

"What about Mack?" Christian asked, his voice rough. He looked toward the corner where Mack was standing as a silent shadow behind Violet.

Violet was sitting in a chair nearby, her white-streaked hair catching the light of the hearth. She looked remarkably small compared to the giants in the room, but her new, bright blue eyes were sharp and attentive.

Selene hopped off the desk, walking over to place a hand on Violet's shoulder. "We're not going to separate a newly paired couple," she said, her tone softening with maternal warmth. "And Violet can't join him. She's safest right now at the palace while her body settles into the change. Mack stays here."

Violet flushed a deep, rosy pink at the mention of being a "paired couple," her eyes darting to Mack. Mack didn't move, but the air around him seemed to thicken with a protective, possessive layer of shadow.

Megan felt a pang of sweetness in her heart. She remembered that feeling- the early days of the bond where every second away felt like a limb was being torn off. She looked at Mack, giving him a supportive wink that he completely ignored, as per usual.

"Well!" Megan chirped, breaking the tension as she stepped forward, her heavy boots clunking cheerfully on the stone. "If I'm going to be surrounded by pale, brooding vampires, I'd better get a head start. Christian, stop looking like you've been sentenced to the gallows! Think of the wine! Think of the fancy capes!"

She marched over to Christian, who was a solid 6'8" of tanned muscle and grumpiness. Without waiting for his consent, she hooked her arm firmly around his, her grip like iron disguised as a hug.

"Come on, Grumpy. We have a Kingdom to visit," Megan laughed. She turned back to the King and Queen, giving a theatrical bow. "Don't worry, My King. I'll make sure he doesn't punch any Counts. And Mack? Take care of our girl. If I come back and she's bored, I'm turning your garden into a swamp!"

The transition from the Palace to the road was Megan's favorite part of being a Lycan. As they left the golden gates behind, she felt the earth beneath her feet change from the "tame" dirt of the gardens to the wild, ancient soil of the outskirts.

Christian walked beside her, his strides long and brooding. He was the "strength" of the Seven, and while Megan was a ray of sunshine, Christian was the storm that came after.

"You're going to talk the entire way, aren't you?" Christian muttered, adjusting the heavy pack on his shoulders.

"Probably!" Megan chirped, dodging a low-hanging branch with a graceful skip. "I haven't been to the Vampire Kingdom in at least a hundred and eighty years. Last time I was there, the High Lady had a fountain that flowed with pomegranate juice and silk. It was very chic. Do you think they still use those ridiculous carriages with the velvet curtains?"

Christian grunted. "I think they're parasites. And I think this mission is just Selene's way of clearing the house so she can play matchmaker with the Ghost and the Librarian."

Megan laughed, the sound echoing through the trees. "Oh, Christian, you have all the romance of a wet rock! Of course it is! And thank the Goddess for it. Mack was turning into a literal statue. He needed a girl with some sass to remind him that he's alive. Besides, don't you want to see the world? My son, Alex, told me that the vampires have started a new trade route through the Shadow Peaks. There's a lot to see!"

Christian looked at her, his brown eyes softening just a fraction. He had always had a soft spot for Megan, mostly because it was impossible to stay mad at someone who radiated so much genuine light. "You talked to Alex today?"

"Always," Megan said, her voice turning warm and tender. "He's doing great. His youngest started her first shift last week. A little grey thing, he said. Strong as a bull. Thomas would have been so proud."

She paused, looking down at her boots as she stepped onto the dark, loamy soil of the forest floor. "That's why this mission is good for us, Christian. The world keeps moving. We can't just sit in the Palace and watch the moss grow. We're the Seven. We're the heartbeat of the land."

Christian shifted his weight, his rough edges smoothing out under Megan's infectious energy. "Fine. But if a vampire tries to bite me, I'm collapsing their castle."

"That's my boy!" Megan cheered, giving his arm a playful shove that would have knocked a human over.

As they moved toward the border, Megan began to feel the earth change. The vibrant, life-filled soil of the Lycan territories began to give way to something cooler, something more still. The Vampire Kingdom was built on land that didn't like to grow; it liked to hold. It was a land of ancient secrets and deep, dark caves.

Megan closed her eyes for a moment as they walked, letting her spirit sink into the ground. She could feel the tectonic plates far below, shifting with a slow, grinding patience. She could feel the roots of the trees seeking water, and the vibration of a thousand small creatures scurrying through the undergrowth.

She felt powerful. She felt confident. And she felt deeply, truly silly.

"Hey, Christian!" she called out, scurrying ahead of him.

"What now, Megan?"

She pointed to a large, grey boulder that sat by the side of the road. "I bet you ten gold pieces I can make that rock look like Leo's face before you can reach the next mile-marker."

Christian rolled his eyes, but a small, hidden smile touched his lips. "You're on, Earth-Shaker."

Megan stomped her foot, the ground groaning in response. With a few quick flicks of her wrists, the boulder began to warp and shift. Within seconds, a remarkably accurate- if somewhat craggy, depiction of King Leo's stern face appeared in the stone.

"See?" Megan laughed, her red curls flying as she danced around her creation. "I still got it!"

As they crested the final hill, the Vampire Kingdom came into view- a sprawl of dark spires and silver-capped towers rising out of a valley of eternal mist. It was beautiful, in a haunting, cold sort of way.

Megan stopped, her hazel eyes reflecting the silver light of the valley. She thought about her long life- the four hundred years of service, the wars she had won, the husband she had loved and lost, and the son she adored.

She thought about the "heavy things" she had seen, the blood she had spilled under King Spear, and the way she had chosen to keep her heart light despite it all.

She felt a surge of gratitude for Selene. The Queen hadn't just given them a mission; she had given them a chance to be themselves again, away from the heavy weight of the Crown's immediate shadow.

"Ready, Grumpy?" Megan asked, her voice soft but full of excitement.

Christian stood beside her, his presence a solid, grounding force. "Ready, Sunshine."

Megan hooked her arm back into his, and together, the Strength and the Joy of the Seven descended into the valley of the night. Megan was already planning exactly how she was going to greet the High Lady. She figured a landslide of flowers would be a good start- something to liven up all that dreary marble.

Because that was Megan. She was the daughter of the mountain, the mother of the future, and the woman who knew that no matter how dark the kingdom, the earth always knew how to find the light.
