The east wing cellar door slammed shut behind them. The heavy wooden panel echoed through the quiet underground room, sealing away the dark tunnels below. For a moment, none of them spoke. The only sound was the faint drip of water somewhere in the cellar and the uneven breathing of the injured man leaning against the wall.
Xu Shen carefully lowered him onto a wooden crate.
"Stay here," he said shortly. "You're not walking anywhere."
The man nodded weakly.
Zhou Yiran leaned against a nearby stone pillar, trying to slow the pounding in her chest. The chase through the tunnels, the gunshots, the voice calling her name everything still lingered like smoke in her mind.
Zhang Weiyu stood near the cellar entrance.
Watching her.Not the room...Not the injured man but Her. The silence stretched longer than it should have. Finally he spoke.
Low and Controlled.
"Explain something to me."
Zhou Yiran looked up. "What?"
Zhang Weiyu stepped forward slowly.
His expression was calm, but the tension in his eyes had sharpened. "All of this," he said quietly, gesturing toward the cellar door behind them. "The intruders. The tunnels. The message."
His gaze locked onto hers. "It started after you married me."
Xu Shen paused mid-step but said nothing.
Zhou Yiran felt the weight of the accusation immediately. "Are you blaming me?" she asked calmly.
"I'm asking a question."
His voice was still even, but the temperature in the room dropped several degrees.
"Who are you exactly, Zhou Yiran?"
The words hit like a stone.
Xu Shen glanced between them but remained silent.
Zhou Yiran folded her arms slowly.
"I'm your wife," she replied.
Zhang Weiyu's lips curved slightly not amusement.
Disbelief. "That's not what I asked."
She held his gaze. "And that's still the answer."
His voice hardened. "No."
He stepped closer. "You arrived here quietly. No past problems. No enemies."
His eyes flicked toward the cellar door.
"And suddenly people are breaking into my house, carving messages in the walls, and chasing us through secret tunnels."
He leaned slightly closer.
"They call your name."
Silence filled the cellar. Zhou Yiran forced herself not to react.
"I can't control what criminals shout in a tunnel," she said evenly.
Xu Shen rubbed his temple slightly but kept listening.
Zhang Weiyu wasn't finished. "They didn't shout my name."
He tilted his head slightly. "They didn't shout Xu Shen's name."
His gaze sharpened. "They shouted yours."
Zhou Yiran replied without hesitation.
"Maybe they know you married me."
"That doesn't explain recognition."
"It could," she said calmly. "You're a very powerful man. Your wife is not exactly invisible."
Xu Shen finally spoke quietly.."She has a point, sir."
Zhang Weiyu didn't look at him.
His eyes remained on Zhou Yiran. "You're avoiding the question."
"And you're inventing suspicions," she replied.
For a moment, the air between them felt like glass about to crack.
Then...
Footsteps echoed from the far side of the cellar. Xu Shen turned sharply. His voice cut through the tension. "Sir."
Zhang Weiyu glanced toward him.
"What?"
Xu Shen's expression had changed. He looked toward the crate. The place where they had left the injured man. It was empty.
Zhou Yiran straightened. "What?"
Xu Shen moved quickly across the cellar, checking behind the crates, the shadows near the wall. Nothing.
His voice lowered. "He's gone."
Zhang Weiyu stared at the empty crate.
"Impossible."
"He could barely stand," Zhou Yiran said.
Xu Shen checked the floor.
Fresh scuff marks led toward the far cellar door.."He didn't walk out alone," Xu Shen muttered.
Zhang Weiyu's patience snapped instantly.
His voice exploded through the room.
"Xu Shen!"
The sharp tone froze both of them.
"You were responsible for him!"
Xu Shen straightened immediately. "Yes, sir."
"And now he disappears from a locked cellar?"
Xu Shen didn't argue. "I'll find him."
Zhang Weiyu's anger sharpened.
"You should have already done that."
Xu Shen's jaw tightened slightly.
But he nodded once. "I'll search the grounds."
He turned and moved quickly toward the cellar exit.
The door shut behind him moments later.
Silence returned.
Zhang Weiyu looked back at Zhou Yiran.
His anger hadn't cooled.
Not even slightly. "Interesting timing," he said coldly.
Zhou Yiran raised an eyebrow. "You think I made him disappear too?"
Zhang Weiyu stepped closer again. "I think too many things are happening around you."
His voice dropped.
"And sooner or later, I will find out why."
Zhou Yiran held his gaze.
Unflinching. "I'm sure you will."
But deep inside...
Her mind was already racing.
Because the injured man disappearing meant one thing.
The intruder had been closer than they thought.
And the game inside this mansion was only getting worse.
The cellar door had barely stopped vibrating from Xu Shen's exit when the silence between Zhou Yiran and Zhang Weiyu thickened again. He didn't move. Didn't look away.
The faint cellar light cast shadows across his face, making his expression harder to read.
"You're very calm," he said finally.
Zhou Yiran leaned lightly against the stone pillar again, though she was careful not to appear relaxed. "What reaction are you expecting?"
"A normal one."
She tilted her head slightly. "Being accused in my own house isn't exactly normal either."
Zhang Weiyu's jaw tightened. "This is my house."
"And I am your wife," she replied smoothly.
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes annoyance, perhaps Or something else.
He stepped closer again, stopping just within arm's reach. "Let's stop pretending," he said quietly. "You know something."
Zhou Yiran met his gaze calmly.
"I know someone broke into the mansion."
"That's obvious."
"I know someone carved messages in your tunnels."
"Also obvious."
"And I know someone just removed a witness from a locked cellar."
She gestured slightly toward the empty crate.
"Which means your security problem is bigger than you thought."
Zhang Weiyu studied her face carefully.
"You're deflecting."
"No," she replied. "I'm observing."
His voice lowered. "They knew your name."
"They also knew the layout of your tunnels," she countered. "That doesn't explain why they came for you."
"And it doesn't explain why they entered your house so easily," she said.
The words hung in the air. For a moment, Zhang Weiyu said nothing. Then he spoke again.
"You're clever."
"That's not a crime."
"No," he agreed.
"But secrets can be."
Zhou Yiran folded her arms again. "You think I'm hiding something."
"I know you are."
She didn't react. Instead she gave a small shrug.
"Everyone hides something."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"That wasn't a denial."
"It wasn't a confession either."
The tension in the cellar sharpened again.
Zhang Weiyu suddenly turned away from her and walked toward the cellar door, running a hand slowly across the old wood.
When he spoke again, his voice was quieter.
"You appeared in my life three months ago."
Zhou Yiran watched him carefully.
"You married me two weeks ago."
"Yes."
"And now my house is full of intruders."
She gave a faint smile.
"Your house was probably full of enemies long before I arrived."
Zhang Weiyu looked back at her.
"That's true."
"But none of them carved your name into my walls."
Her heartbeat skipped once.
But she kept her expression neutral.
"Maybe they wanted your attention."
His eyes hardened.
"No."
"They wanted yours."
Before she could answer...
Footsteps approached quickly outside the cellar.
The door opened.
Xu Shen stepped back inside.
His breathing was steady, but his expression had darkened.
Zhang Weiyu spoke first. "Where is he ?"
Xu Shen shook his head once.
"He's gone."
"Gone how?"
"There's a service exit behind the cellar storage area," Xu Shen said. "It leads to the east garden."
Zhang Weiyu frowned. "That door is usually locked."
"It was open."
Zhou Yiran spoke quietly. "So someone helped him."
Xu Shen nodded. "Or someone was waiting for him."
Zhang Weiyu's voice dropped. "Did anyone see movement in the garden?"
"No."
"Security?"
"I already checked," Xu Shen said. "No alarms triggered."
Zhang Weiyu let out a quiet breath. "Unbelievable."
Xu Shen continued. "But there was one thing."
Zhang Weiyu looked up sharply. "What?"
Xu Shen reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
"I found this on the cellar floor." He handed it over.
Zhang Weiyu unfolded it slowly. Two words were written across the page.
In dark ink.
NEXT TIME.
Silence filled the cellar again. Zhou Yiran looked at the note. Her stomach tightened slightly. Xu Shen spoke quietly. "They left it for us."
Zhang Weiyu's expression turned colder. "No."
He folded the paper again carefully. "They left it for her."
His gaze shifted back to Zhou Yiran.
And this time... There was no trace of doubt in his eyes. Only certainty.
Whatever was happening in this mansion…
Somehow...
It revolved around her.
The word NEXT TIME seemed to linger in the air long after Zhang Weiyu folded the paper.
No one spoke. Xu Shen stood quietly beside the cellar door, waiting. Zhou Yiran remained near the stone pillar, her expression carefully neutral. But inside, her thoughts were moving quickly. Too quickly.
Zhang Weiyu slipped the paper into his coat pocket. Then he looked at her again. "Convenient," he said.
Zhou Yiran raised an eyebrow slightly. "For who?"
"For you."
She let out a soft breath. "Your house is invaded, your prisoner disappears, and somehow that's convenient for me?"
Xu Shen shifted slightly but kept silent. Zhang Weiyu stepped forward again, stopping a few feet away from her.
"They call your name," he said.
"They leave messages."
His gaze hardened.
"And now they leave notes after escaping my cellar." Zhou Yiran answered calmly. "If I were working with them, why would they run?"
Xu Shen glanced at her. It was a fair point.
Zhang Weiyu didn't respond immediately.
Instead, he studied her face carefully like he was searching for cracks in a wall. Finally he said quietly, "You're not afraid."
Zhou Yiran blinked once. "Should I be?"
"You're standing in a cellar where armed men broke into my house, shot at us, and kidnapped a witness." He tilted his head slightly. "Most people would be shaking."
Zhou Yiran shrugged. "Most people aren't married to you."
Xu Shen almost coughed. Zhang Weiyu didn't smile. But the corner of his mouth moved slightly. "That's not an answer."
"It's the truth." Silence followed. Then Xu Shen spoke. "Sir."
Zhang Weiyu turned toward him. "What?"
"I checked the garden and the east gate."
"And?"
"There's no sign of forced exit."
Zhang Weiyu frowned. "So he didn't leave through the main grounds."
Xu Shen nodded slowly. "Which means there's another path."
Zhou Yiran spoke quietly. "Another passage."
Both men looked at her.
She gestured toward the cellar floor. "This house already has secret tunnels."
Xu Shen nodded. "True."
Zhang Weiyu crossed his arms slowly. "You're suggesting someone knows my house better than I do."
"I'm suggesting someone prepared this before tonight," Zhou Yiran replied.
Xu Shen added, "And someone helped the injured man escape."
Zhang Weiyu's gaze darkened slightly. "Inside help."
Xu Shen didn't deny it. "It's possible."
Zhou Yiran watched the two men carefully.
"This person didn't just break in randomly," she said.
"They knew exactly where to lead us."
Xu Shen nodded again. "The tunnels."
"The cellar."
"The timing."
Zhang Weiyu's voice lowered. "And the message."
He pulled the folded paper from his pocket again. His eyes moved slowly across the words. NEXT TIME. Then he looked back at Zhou Yiran. "You realize what this means."
She tilted her head slightly. "That they're not finished?"
"No," he said quietly. "It means they expect to come back."
Xu Shen spoke again. "And they believe they'll succeed next time."
Zhou Yiran felt the tension rising again. "Then we should prepare."
Xu Shen nodded. "Security will need to double."
"I'll handle that," he added.
Zhang Weiyu remained silent for several seconds.Thinking Then he finally said, "No."
Xu Shen frowned. "Sir?"
Zhang Weiyu looked back toward the cellar entrance. "If they want another move…"
His voice became colder. "…we let them make it."
Xu Shen understood immediately. "A trap."
Zhang Weiyu nodded once.
Zhou Yiran crossed her arms slowly. "And what happens when they come back?"
Zhang Weiyu looked directly at her.
"This time," he said quietly,
"We won't let them leave."
The cellar grew silent again But Zhou Yiran felt something else beneath the tension.
Something far more dangerous.
Because if Zhang Weiyu was setting a trap...
Then sooner or later the intruder would return. And when that happened…
The truth she was hiding might not stay hidden anymore.
The cellar slowly returned to silence But the tension didn't fade. It only settled deeper into the stone walls, into the quiet space between the three of them. Zhang Weiyu walked toward the cellar stairs, the folded note still between his fingers. The single word on it seemed heavier than it should have been.
'NEXT TIME' He stopped halfway to the door.
"Xu Shen."
"Yes, sir."
"Double the guards."
Xu Shen nodded immediately. "Already planned."
"Not just outside," Zhang Weiyu added. "Inside the mansion as well."
Xu Shen understood. "Servants too?"
"Yes."
Xu Shen's eyes sharpened slightly. "You think someone inside is helping them."
Zhang Weiyu replied without hesitation. "I think someone inside opened that cellar door."
Zhou Yiran listened quietly. Xu Shen gave a small nod. "I'll check the staff logs and security rotations."
"Do that," Zhang Weiyu said. Then he added something colder.
"And don't tell them why."
Xu Shen didn't ask questions. "Understood."
He turned and headed up the stairs, already pulling out his phone to contact the security team.
The cellar door shut behind him. Now only Zhou Yiran and Zhang Weiyu remained again. The quiet returned. Zhou Yiran crossed the room slowly, glancing once more at the empty crate where the injured man had been.
"He was barely conscious," she said.
Zhang Weiyu didn't turn. "Yes."
"Yet he vanished in minutes."
"Yes."
"That means someone planned it."
Zhang Weiyu looked back at her.
"That's exactly what I think."
She studied his expression. "And you still think it's connected to me."
His answer came instantly. "Yes."
Zhou Yiran sighed softly. "You're very stubborn."
"And you're very mysterious."
She gave a small, tired smile. "That's not illegal."
"No," he said.
"But it's inconvenient."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Zhou Yiran asked quietly, "Do you really believe I'm working with them?"
Zhang Weiyu watched her carefully. "No."
The answer surprised her slightly.
She blinked. "Then why all the questions?"
His voice lowered. "Because they're interested in you."
He took one step closer. "And I want to know why."
Zhou Yiran held his gaze. "So do I." Another silence. But this one felt different. He was studying her again. Not accusing but Analyzing. Finally he turned away and walked toward the stairs.
"We're done here." Zhou Yiran followed slowly. As they reached the cellar door, Zhang Weiyu stopped suddenly. Something on the floor caught his attention. He bent down. Picked it up.
Zhou Yiran frowned slightly. "What is it?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead he turned the small object over in his hand. A thin metal coin.Old and Dark. A Carved with a symbol. Three parallel lines.
Zhou Yiran's breath caught. The same symbol from the tunnel wall.
Zhang Weiyu looked at it quietly.
Then his eyes lifted toward her.
Zhang Weiyu's eyes narrowed. "Again."
His voice was quiet. Not surprised. Recognizing. Xu Shen had already left the cellar, so only Zhou Yiran heard the shift in his tone.
"The same symbol," Zhang Weiyu said slowly. "The one from the hidden door."
Zhou Yiran forced her expression to stay neutral. "Yes."
Zhang Weiyu studied the coin carefully. "This wasn't dropped accidentally." He slid the coin into his pocket.
"This was left."
Zhou Yiran frowned slightly. "For who?"
Zhang Weiyu looked at her. Directly.
"For us."
A pause.
Then he added something colder. "Or more specifically…" His gaze sharpened slightly.
"…for you."
Zhou Yiran didn't answer. She simply held his gaze.
Zhang Weiyu opened the cellar door and stepped out But as they walked into the corridor above, the thought stayed in Zhou Yiran's mind like a shadow. The intruder hadn't just escaped. They had left another sign.
The same symbol Again.Which meant one thing. This wasn't random. Someone inside this game was making sure she remembered something. Something important. And Zhou Yiran had the unsettling feeling that sooner or later...
She would find out what those three lines actually meant.
