Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Bleeding Veins

The air at the mouth of the Frozen Veins didn't just bite; it felt like it was trying to flay the skin from Lin Wei's bones. The sickly red pulse from the valley grew stronger with every step, casting long, rhythmic shadows that looked like the beating of a dying heart. As Lin Wei led the party forward, the ground beneath their boots transitioned from pristine snow to a slick, crystalline floor of black ice, crisscrossed with glowing red fissures that hummed with a low, agonizing frequency.

"Stay on the white patches," Lin Wei commanded, his voice now a singular, haunting tone that made the air itself vibrate. "The red lines are drawing Qi directly from the earth. Step on one, and you'll be an empty husk before you can scream".

Captain Feng and his men moved with robotic precision, their faces pale behind their frost-rimed masks. They had seen the Young Master shatter a man like glass; they weren't about to question his warnings now.

"System," Lin Wei thought, his dual-colored eyes scanning the jagged peaks. "The pressure here is insane. My fire core is fighting to stay lit, and the ice core is trying to consume my entire left side."

The blue interface flickered, the light dimming and brightening in sync with the red pulse of the valley.

[Location: The Heart of the Frozen Veins — Ritual Chamber Entrance]

[Environmental Hazard: Void Siphon Active. Host's Qi consumption is increased by 300%].

[Warning: Elemental Equilibrium is destabilizing. The jade token is at 105% capacity]

Lin Wei gritted his teeth, the heat in his chest reaching a fever pitch even as his left arm felt like it was carved from an iceberg. He reached the crest of the final ridge and stopped. Below them lay a natural amphitheater of jagged ice, its center dominated by a massive, pulsing monolith of red crystal.

Surrounding the monolith were a dozen cultists, their tattered rags fluttering in a wind that shouldn't exist. They were chanting in a tongue that sounded like grinding stone, their voices harmonizing with the vibration of the red veins. At the base of the monolith, tied to pillars of black ice, were three Lin Clan disciples who had gone missing weeks ago. Their eyes were rolled back, their Qi being visibly drained into the crystal in ribbons of pale light.

"Lin Han's 'true heir' wasn't a person," Lin Wei whispered, a cold realization settling in his gut. "It's a resurrection. They're using our blood to feed whatever is inside that rock".

"Young Master, your orders?" Feng asked, his hand white-knuckled on the hilt of his broadsword.

"Kill the chanters. I'll take the monolith," Lin Wei said. He didn't wait for a response. He leaped from the ridge, the Phoenix-Boosted Qi in his legs exploding in a burst of fire that sent him hurtling toward the center of the arena.

The cultists didn't even stop their chanting as he landed. Instead, the red monolith flared, and a wave of raw, malevolent force slammed into Lin Wei, sending him skidding back across the black ice.

[Alert: Shadow Shield Active. Direct physical attacks will result in 100% damage reflection]

"Fine," Lin Wei snarled, pushing himself up. "We'll do it the hard way".

He called upon the Elemental Equilibrium, but this time, he didn't try to keep the powers separate. He forced them to collide. He drew the white-hot Phoenix fire into his left hand and the absolute cold of the Ice Physique into his right.

The pain was transcendental. It felt like his arms were being simultaneously flayed and frozen, his tendons snapping and regrowing in a cycle of agonizing seconds. He brought his hands together, forcing the opposing energies to fuse into a swirling, unstable sphere of violet light.

The air around him began to scream. The black ice beneath his feet cracked, steam and frost erupting in violent plumes.

"Wei'er, stop!" the System's voice echoed, sounding almost human in its panic. "Your meridians cannot handle a dual-core fusion at this level! You will vanish!"

"Then make sure I hit the target first!" Lin Wei roared.

He thrust the violet sphere forward. It didn't travel like a projectile; it tore through the air, leaving a vacuum in its wake. The moment it touched the monolith's red shield, the world went silent. For a heartbeat, the red pulse stopped. The wind stopped. Even the chanting ceased.

Then, the explosion hit.

The violet light consumed the monolith, the cultists, and the ritual site in a dome of pure, unadulterated energy. The shockwave leveled the surrounding ice monoliths, sending a cloud of pulverized frost into the sky that could be seen for miles.

When the light finally faded, Lin Wei was on his knees. His robes were tatters, his skin was a map of cracked ice and scorched flesh, and the jade token on his chest was glowing a dull, exhausted gray.

The red monolith was gone. In its place was a crater of smoking, black glass. The three disciples were slumped on the ground, alive but unconscious.

[Quest Completed: The Ritual of the Void.]

[Reward: Level 2 Integration - Dual-Core Mastery Unlocked.]

[Status: Host is in 'System-Induced Coma' to prevent total meridian collapse. Duration: Unknown.]

Lin Wei saw Captain Feng running toward him, his mouth moving in a silent shout, but the world was already fading. As his eyes closed, he saw one last thing in the center of the crater: a single, small fragment of the red crystal, still pulsing with a faint, malevolent light.

The Shadow hadn't been defeated. It had simply been scattered.
