Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: The First Lift

The iron lift cage of the Obsidian Spire was not designed for passengers. It was a massive, three-ton platform of rusted boiler-plate and riveted iron mesh, built to haul crude pig iron down to the foundries and carry drained carboys of Diesel-Qi up to the clan's middle-tier accounting houses.

Lin Wei stood in the center of the platform. His right arm was tucked inside the loop of a heavy iron chain, acting as an unmoving, slate-gray brace. The petrification had completed its transit across his right clavicle; his collarbone was now a solid bar of dark, lightless mineral, and the interlocking gear-pattern etched into his skin had crept down his chest, its teeth resting right above his quiet heart.

Beside him, Xiao Mei sat on a crate of salvaged scrap metal, her fingers white as she gripped the hilt of a shortened iron poker she had ground down into a makeshift stake. Her breath came in short, nervous puffs of gray mist. The air was getting thinner, colder, and sharper the higher the lift climbed, stripped of the heavy sulfur grease of the sub-levels.

"The Middle Tier is where the Gear-Registry is kept, Third Young Master," she whispered over the deafening, rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the elevator chains. "Every forge-owner, every branch artisan, and every scrap-dealer has their license stamped there. If your brother Hao realizes the Black-Vane Enforcers didn't return, he won't just send more guards. He'll shut down the main steam-conduit for the entire sector. He'll freeze the district out."

Lin Wei didn't look down at her. His single violet left eye remained fixed on the iron ceiling of the shaft as the orange glow of the sub-level furnaces faded into a dull, ash-grey twilight.

"Let him shut it down," Lin Wei said, his voice a flat, mechanical scrape. "A man who relies on a valve to keep his house warm has already given away his keys."

SCREEECH.

The lift cage shuddered to a violent halt. The heavy iron chains overhead groaned, their links stretching as the counterweight brake locked into place with a pneumatic hiss.

The iron mesh doors didn't slide open. Instead, a heavy, brass-trimmed viewing slit slid back, revealing a row of five pairs of eyes encased in polished silver goggles—the Sector Clerks of the middle-tier customs gate.

"Identification," a voice boomed through an acoustic brass horn mounted beside the door. "The sub-level freight shift was scheduled for 0600. Why is the cargo car boy empty? Where is the siphon-master's digital manifest?"

Lin Wei stepped forward, his slate-gray boots making a heavy, solid thud on the platform. He didn't offer a corporate ID or a clan stamp. He simply reached out with his left hand—the human one, now covered in hard, dark calluses from the manual forge—and gripped the rusted iron mesh of the gate.

"System," he thought, his internal engine giving a deep, rhythmic thud that vibrated through the floor plates. "Give me 3,000 points on the intake valve. Let's calibrate their gate."

[Points Expended: 3,000.]

[Current Balance: 960,000.]

[Sovereign Engine: Instigating 'Structural Vent'.]

The 3,000 points didn't create a flame. They created an instantaneous, localized drop in temperature that turned the moisture in the brass horn into solid ice. The metal mesh beneath his hand didn't shatter; it softened, the molecular pressure within the iron pins dropping so fast that the heavy gate simply slid down its tracks like wet clay, collapsing into a heap of distorted scrap metal at his feet.

The five Sector Clerks stumbled backward, their silver goggles fogging instantly as the cold air from the shaft rushed into their pristine, marble-tiled office. They wore the clean, white doublets of the Lin Clan's administrative branch, their lapels adorned with small, ticking brass gear-pins that showed their 2-Star registration status.

"He... he's the Third Young Master," one of the clerks gasped, dropping his copper ledger-pen onto the floor. "The discard from the fuel-vats! His Dan-engine was supposed to be completely uncoupled!"

Lin Wei stepped over the collapsed gate and entered the Middle Tier.

The floor here was not made of rusted grating, but of polished gray limestone tiles, crisscrossed by neat, inset copper tracks where small, automated steam-carts carried boxes of receipts between the offices. The air was clean, but it carried the distinct, unmistakable hum of a Siphon-Grid—the subtle, high-frequency vibration of thousands of people's vitality being turned into digital wealth.

At the end of the long hall, standing before a pair of heavy, mahogany doors etched with the clan's steam-sword emblem, stood a single man.

He didn't wear a leather apron or a clerk's doublet. He wore a long, flowing robe of dark charcoal silk, his chest plate stylized to look like an open boiler furnace with three glowing gold bars painted across the heart—a 3-Star Steam-Master.

[Target Identified: Lin Feng (Second Cousin / Registry Administrator).]

[Core Status: High-Pressure Diesel Core (Calibrated).]

[Combat Rating: Tier-2 'Steam-Scholar'.]

"You should have stayed in the soot, Wei," Lin Feng said, his fingers casually resting on the hilt of a slender, polished rapier that was connected by a silver-threaded tube to the compact steam-pack on his lower back. "Hao gave you a comfortable death. Draining your veins for a few weeks is a far better fate than what the Imperial Cartel does to non-persons."

Lin Wei stopped ten paces away. He let the tip of his charcoal-violet blade rest against the limestone tile, leaving a faint, frost-rimed line on the polished stone.

"The Cartel doesn't interest me, Feng," Lin Wei said, his violet eye locking onto the gold bars on his cousin's chest. "I'm here for the registry. Turn over the logs, or I'll use your core to heat the lift."
