Chapter 25 - The Unspoken Vow

The silver moonlight spilled across the balcony, casting long, elegant shadows on the stone floor. Vaelora stood by the railing, her fingers gripping the cold marble so tightly her knuckles turned white. She was lost in the fading glow of the moon, unaware that someone was watching her from the shadows of the doorway.

It was Azeal. He had followed her, his own heart heavy with the weight of the coming dawn. He didn't know yet that Vaelora's feelings for him had shifted from simple friendship into something far deeper, something that terrified her.

As he stepped closer, the light caught the glisten of tears on her cheeks. His breath hitched.

"Vaelora?" His voice was unusually soft, filled with a sudden, sharp concern he had never dared to show before. "What's wrong? Why are there tears in your eyes?"

Startled, Vaelora quickly turned away, wiping her face with the back of her hand. She refused to let him see her break. Forcing a playful, mocking smile, she looked back at him. "It's nothing. I was just thinking... what on earth will happen to you without me? You can barely hold a sword straight. How do you expect to survive the Zarethian Trial alone?"

Azeal felt a flicker of annoyance, but it wasn't the kind that sparked a fight. It was a shield for his own nerves. "Is that so? I'll have you know I'm a far better warrior than you! The only reason you ever won our spars was because... because I couldn't stand to see you lose."

Vaelora froze. Her heart skipped a beat as she stared at him, her eyes wide with surprise. "Really? And why is that, Azeal?"

The air between them suddenly felt thin. Azeal opened his mouth to retort, but the words died in his throat. He went silent, the fierce expression on his face softening into something vulnerable.

The truth was, deep within the chambers of his heart, Azeal had begun to cherish Vaelora more than his own life. But he had never whispered it to a soul—not even to himself. He wasn't ready to believe that a warrior like him could be so easily defeated by the smile of the girl standing before him.

A heavy silence settled over the balcony. Only the whispering wind filled the gap between them, carrying the weight of a truth neither was brave enough to speak.
