Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Clash of the Fading Tribe

The morning sun had barely climbed over the horizon when the village settled into its usual rhythm.

Under Kael's leadership, the once-struggling settlement now moved like a living machine. Fields stretched farther than they had even a week before. Titan cows grazed calmly behind reinforced wooden barriers. Weapons crafted with system points rested in the hands of guards who'd learned, day by day, how to actually use them.

Kael stood on the watch platform, eyes sweeping the treeline.

Something felt off.

Warning from the Forest

Beside him, Angelika suddenly went rigid.

"Kael." Her voice dropped low. "Multiple presences… coming fast."

Elara's hand moved to her weapon without hesitation. Nearby, one of the Abyssari — rarely one to show anything on her face — narrowed her violet eyes toward the trees.

Then—

WHOOSH!

Spears tore out of the forest line, cutting through the morning air.

"ENEMY ATTACK!" a guard shouted, the alarm ripping through the settlement.

Kael's eyes went cold. "Defensive formation!"

The Desperate Raiders

Nearly thirty tribal warriors burst from the treeline, and one glance told Kael everything he needed to know about them.

They looked desperate. Thin. Hungry. But hunger made people dangerous in a way that comfort never did.

They wore rough animal skins and carried crude, deadly weapons — the kind built by people who no longer had the luxury of doing things properly. At the front of the charge stood a warrior impossible to miss: a wild bear skin draped across broad shoulders, messy black hair falling into piercing blue eyes, a heavily muscled frame carrying itself with the presence of something closer to a beast than a man.

Angelika muttered under her breath, surprise clear in her voice. "That one… he's strong."

The warrior stepped forward and roared across the field, "Leave your food and livestock — or we take them by force!"

Kael stepped down from the platform without hurry, his voice quiet in a way that carried further than shouting ever could.

"You chose the wrong village."

Dean — The Wild Bear

The warrior grinned fiercely, teeth bared. "I am Dean. Remember the one who defeats you!"

He charged — fast, far faster than any ordinary tribesman had any right to move. The ground shook beneath his steps.

Elara shifted forward, ready to intercept.

Kael raised a hand instead. "I'll handle him."

Dean's fist came in like a swung hammer.

BOOM!

Kael caught it bare-handed.

Dean's eyes went wide. "…What?"

Kael's physique — reshaped by weeks of system growth — didn't so much as tremble under the impact.

The next second, he answered with his own strike.

WHAM!

His counterpunch landed clean into Dean's stomach, and the big warrior flew backward, crashing hard into the dirt.

Silence fell over the battlefield. Even the raiders who'd charged in behind him froze mid-step.

Angelika allowed herself a faint smile. "As expected…"

Battle Ends Quickly

Without Dean dominating the front line, the raid lost all its momentum almost instantly. Kael's trained guards closed the gap, surrounding what remained of the attacking group within minutes.

Weapons hit the dirt. Raiders were rounded up, hands raised, fight already gone out of them.

Dean tried to stand and failed, his body still reeling from the blow — but his eyes still burned with something that refused to look like defeat. He didn't beg. Didn't plead.

Kael respected that, even as he stood over him.

The Truth Revealed

One of the thinner tribesmen stepped forward nervously, hands shaking. "Please… don't kill us!"

Kael's gaze shifted toward him. "Explain."

The man swallowed hard before the words came. "Our tribe… population is falling. Hunting grounds are empty. Children are starving." His voice trembled on the last word. "We had no choice."

The air over the field grew heavy. Even Elara's expression softened slightly at that. Angelika crossed her arms, thoughtful now instead of guarded. Nearby, the Abyssari watched Kael closely, waiting to see which way this would turn.

Meeting the Tribal Chief

Kael spoke calmly, cutting through the tension. "Take me to your village."

Dean's head snapped up, surprise plain on his face. "You… would come?"

Kael simply turned toward the treeline. "Move."

The Fading Tribe

By afternoon, Kael and a small escort had reached the raiders' settlement, and the sight waiting for them there was grim.

Weak huts leaned against each other for support. Thin children watched from doorways with eyes too old for their faces. Exhausted hunters sat idle, having nothing left to hunt. The food storage, what little existed of it, sat nearly empty.

At the center of it all sat an old man — very old, skin wrinkled like dry bark, but his eyes carried a sharpness that age hadn't managed to dull.

He was introduced as Chief Eric. Nearly eighty years old, and still, somehow, leading what remained of his people.

Understanding the Crisis

Eric spoke slowly once he'd heard the full account of the morning's failed raid.

"Our tribe is dying." No pride in the words. Only truth, plain and unadorned. "We attacked because we feared extinction."

Silence settled over the gathering.

Kael studied the village around him — the huts, the hollow-eyed children, the empty storage — calculating, measuring, the way he measured everything now.

Then he said something that shocked everyone present.

Kael's Offer

"Join my village."

Every head in the clearing snapped toward him. Dean's eyes went wide. Eric leaned forward slightly in his seat, as if he hadn't quite trusted his own hearing.

Kael continued, steady and unhurried. "You will get food. Protection. Work." He paused, letting the weight of it settle. "In return, you become one tribe."

The old chief closed his eyes for a long moment. No one in the clearing dared to breathe.

Finally, Eric opened them again, and his voice came out firm despite everything his body had been through.

"…We accept."

A New Strength Rises

A system notification flashed across Kael's vision as they turned to make the walk back.

[ Population Incoming… ][ Village Strength Increasing… ][ New Talented Individual Detected: Dean ]

Kael's lips curved slightly at the sight of it.

The village was growing faster than even he had expected.

And with warriors like Dean now folding into its ranks, the future battlefield of this primitive world was about to look very different than it had this morning.
