Chapter 20 -  Chapter 20 — “Before the Red Storm”

Kael didn't wake for two days.

The wound across his chest had been deep.

Too deep.

Even with herbal paste and stitched leather binding, fever burned through him like wildfire.

Dane stood outside his hut the entire time.

Dean trained twice as hard.

No one spoke it aloud—

But everyone knew.

If Kael died…

Everything they built would fracture.

On the third night—

Kael's eyes opened.

Pain greeted him first.

Then memory.

The monster.

The children.

The cannibal tribe.

He tried to sit up—

And nearly blacked out.

Dane immediately stepped forward.

"You're not dead."

Kael gave a weak half-smile.

"Disappointed?"

Dane almost laughed… but didn't.

"They will come."

Kael nodded slowly.

"Yes."

 Uniting the Fractured

The captured fake chief was brought before the council.

Bound.

Broken.

Still defiant.

Other smaller tribes who had started trading with Kael were called secretly.

No grand meeting.

No public announcement.

Only leaders.

Inside the copper hall.

Kael walked in slowly, still bandaged.

His presence alone silenced the room.

One leader spoke first.

"We heard you fought a Level 5 monster."

Kael ignored the praise.

Instead, he signaled.

The prisoner was thrown forward.

"This man is Red Sand."

Murmurs exploded.

Fear spread instantly.

Everyone had heard whispers.

Cannibals.

Woman-hunters.

Village killers.

Kael's voice was steady.

"They weaken villages slowly."

"Kill young men."

"Steal women."

"Feed children to monsters."

Silence followed.

Not disbelief.

Recognition.

Some of them had lost people too.

One older chief clenched his fists.

"They touched us last winter."

Another whispered, "We thought it was sickness…"

Kael looked at them all.

"If they erase one tribe at a time…"

"Eventually there will be only them."

Dean stepped forward.

"They are strong."

"They attack at night."

"They burn fields."

"They take women alive."

The room felt suffocating.

Fear was natural.

Kael understood that.

But fear must turn into direction.

He spoke again—

Slow.

Clear.

"Alone… you are prey."

"Together… you are war."

The sentence hung in the air.

Not emotional.

Not dramatic.

Just truth.

He continued:

"I will not force alliance."

"But if Red Sand attacks one…"

"They attack all."

One by one—

The tribal leaders nodded.

Not out of loyalty.

Out of survival.

A pact was formed.

No name.

No banner.

Just agreement.

If Red Sand appears—

Signal fire.

Immediate reinforcement.

Shared warriors.

Shared information.

Civilization had just taken its first political step.

 The Retaliation

It happened sooner than expected.

Five nights later.

No moon.

Wind silent.

Dane felt it first.

Movement beyond trees.

Too organized to be animals.

Too quiet to be traders.

Then—

A flaming arrow struck the outer hut.

And chaos erupted.

Red Sand had come.

Nearly eighty warriors.

Faces painted in dark ash.

Weapons crude but deadly.

And behind them—

Cages.

They didn't come to raid.

They came to take.

Dean roared and led the elite soldiers forward.

Iron shields collided with bone spears.

Arrows cut through firelight.

Kael stood on the raised platform despite his wound reopening.

Blood soaking through bandages again.

But he didn't move back.

System interface flickered:

Warning: Physical Condition 63%

Combat Risk: High

He ignored it.

"Formation Three!" he shouted.

The elite soldiers shifted instantly.

Shield wall tightened.

Archers elevated behind.

This wasn't a primitive tribe anymore.

This was organized defense.

Red Sand warriors crashed against iron.

And for the first time—

They met resistance.

Real resistance.

Dean fought like a beast unleashed.

Three enemies fell under his blade.

Dane's arrows never missed.

But then—

From the back lines—

A massive figure stepped forward.

Bigger than the rest.

Scar across face.

Necklace of human teeth.

Red Sand War Leader.

His eyes locked onto Kael.

Recognition.

Hatred.

Challenge.

He pointed his blade toward Kael.

"You killed our feeder."

So there were more monsters.

Good to know.

Kael stepped down from the platform.

Dane grabbed his arm.

"You're not fully healed."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"If I hide now… they smell weakness."

He walked forward.

Pain screamed through every step.

The Red Sand leader charged.

Their blades clashed—

Impact shaking Kael's injured body.

The leader was strong.

Very strong.

But reckless.

Fueled by rage.

Kael fought controlled.

Precise.

He wasn't just surviving anymore.

He was calculating.

One opening.

That's all he needed.

The Red Sand leader overextended—

Kael twisted—

And drove his blade straight through the man's throat.

Silence spread like shockwave.

Their leader fell.

Red Sand warriors hesitated.

Just for a second.

And that second was enough.

Dean pushed forward.

"Drive them back!"

Half fled.

Half died.

The cages were left behind.

Empty.

They had come expecting victory.

Instead—

They met resistance.

Real resistance.

As dawn broke—

Smoke rose from burned huts.

Bodies lay scattered.

Kael stood in the middle of it all.

Bleeding again.

But alive.

Stronger tribes had joined.

Red Sand had tested them.

And failed.

But Kael knew something important now—

That wasn't their full force.

This was warning.

Not war.

He looked toward the horizon.

Civilization had drawn blood.

Now the real storm would come.
