CHAPTER 34: ZERO-MASS EXECUTION
SCENE 1: THE STRUGGLE
Inside the cavernous, red-lit bunker, the Northern King was finally experiencing panic.
Viraj violently ripped and pulled against the thick iron-wood roots wrapped securely around his legs. The living wood groaned under his immense, augmented physical strength, jagged splinters snapping into the air.
But forty feet away, kneeling at the blasted entrance of the throne room, Dhruv refused to let go. Blood was pouring freely from the Anchor's nose and ears, dripping onto the concrete. Dhruv pushed past the agonizing Neural Load, forcing more raw, radioactive green bio-sap into the vines, reinforcing the organic vice faster than Viraj could break it.
Realizing he couldn't step forward to initiate physical contact, Viraj roared in pure, unadulterated frustration.
"You think some street-trash wood can hold a King?!" Viraj screamed.
He stopped pulling at the roots and instead pulled both of his arms back. The scars on his forearms and neck flared blindingly bright, vibrating with the millions of joules of stored kinetic energy he had absorbed from the Red Zone. He couldn't punch Rudra, so he was going to unleash a massive, omnidirectional shockwave to blow the entire bunker—and the squad holding him—into dust.
Rudra, standing just twenty feet away in his own iron-wood splints, didn't flinch.
The Vanguard didn't brace for impact. He didn't raise a shield. He simply, calmly, took one large step to the right, perfectly clearing the line of sight straight down the center of the room.
SCENE 2: THE STUTTER
The exact microsecond Viraj pulled his glowing arms back to detonate, the air directly behind the King's head violently distorted with shattered violet glitches.
Maya didn't run. She burned her Neural Load and bypassed the physical space entirely.
Snap. She micro-stuttered directly out of the ether, materializing perfectly poised on Viraj's massive, tense shoulders. Before he could even begin to push his arms forward to unleash the apocalyptic shockwave, Maya slammed the palms of both her blistered hands flat against his temples.
Her optic interface flared a brilliant, absolute violet in her mind's eye:
[MOD 3 ACTIVE: CHRONO-ISOLATION.]
[TARGET LOCKED.]
A localized Lag Field erupted in a crackling dome of heavy blue static, swallowing Viraj's upper half entirely.
The blinding kinetic energy building in his arms completely, instantly froze in mid-air. The dust kicked up by his struggle hung perfectly suspended around his chest. His scarred face was locked in a snarling, terrifying glitch. Viraj was suspended in absolute reality, completely paralyzed, his defensive kinetic aura rendered entirely useless.
He was wide open.
SCENE 3: THE ZERO-MASS SHOT
Exactly one mile away, looking through a shattered window in a ruined high-rise, Laksh slowly exhaled.
His breathing was perfectly steady. The hacked, overcharged sniper rifle resting on the rusted windowsill hummed with an unstable, terrifyingly hot crimson static. Peering through the cracked optic lens, his crosshairs were perfectly, flawlessly aligned with the center of Viraj's exposed chest, perfectly framed through the open bunker doors.
"Lag field holding for 2.5 seconds," Maya's voice crackled breathlessly over the comms.
In the scope, Laksh watched Maya execute a flawless backflip off Viraj's frozen shoulders, clearing the kill box.
Laksh didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
There was no deafening gunshot. There was absolutely no physical recoil against Laksh's shoulder.
A blinding, silent beam of zero-mass thermal static instantly bridged the mile-long gap. It moved at the speed of light, shrieking straight through the open bunker doors.
Because the beam was pure, concentrated thermal radiation, it possessed absolutely zero physical mass. When it struck Viraj, the King's invincible kinetic absorption mechanic simply didn't trigger. There was no momentum to absorb. There was no physical force to redirect.
The blinding red beam cleanly, effortlessly melted straight through Viraj's chest plate, instantly vaporizing his heart and punching a perfectly cauterized hole straight through the neural port on the back of his spine.
SCENE 4: THE OVERLOAD
[00.00]
The two-and-a-half seconds expired. The Lag Field shattered like broken glass.
Time violently snapped back into the Northern King. Viraj gasped, a sickening, wet mechanical wheeze tearing from his throat. His glowing red eyes went wide with absolute, uncomprehending shock.
He looked down. There was a smoking, perfectly round, cauterized hole entirely through the center of his chest.
With his neural port and core completely vaporized by Laksh's zero-mass shot, Viraj instantly lost all control over the millions of joules of kinetic energy he had stored in his corrupted biology. The massive battery he had used to terrorize the Red Zone was suddenly completely uncontained.
The energy violently, catastrophically backfired.
Across Laksh's sniper scope, the Boss UI flickered one final, chaotic time:
[FATAL ERROR.]
[KINETIC CONTAINMENT FAILURE.]
There was no final, arrogant monologue. There was no desperate last stand.
Viraj shattered from the inside out.
The stored kinetic energy ruptured his physical form in a massive, completely silent explosion of blinding white light and red digital ash. The shockwave didn't expand outward; it imploded, consuming the King entirely.
When the blinding light faded, the throne room was terrifyingly quiet.
Viraj was gone. All that remained was a smoking, scorch-marked crater in the concrete floor, surrounded by Dhruv's surviving iron-wood roots.
A mile away, Laksh slowly lowered his smoking rifle. In the bunker, Maya landed softly on her feet, wiping ash from her cheek. Dhruv collapsed onto his back at the entrance, laughing breathlessly as the heavy green light faded from his eyes. And Rudra simply stood in the center of the room, the blue Decryption Key pulsing steadily in his chest.
They had just executed a King without letting him land a single hit. The boss was dead.
