Chapter 33

Cthulhu Cult 2

Howard sat opposite Arthur, watching him intently as he listened to his explanation in silence.

Arthur did not speak excessively, nor did he drown him in details. Instead, he chose his words carefully, weighing every sentence with a calm mind and clear wisdom.

Howard's situation now was supernatural in every sense of the word.

The world he had lived in all his life had been a normal human world, governed by familiar laws.

But this world…

Had been subjected to a slow and hidden invasion by the idea of the Cthulhu Cult—and by Cthulhu himself.

The world of Cthulhu—according to what Arthur understood—was a disgusting, strange, and indescribably bizarre world.

A world without light…

Where nothing existed but darkness, danger, and death.

And yet, the world in which Cthulhu now resided was not his original world.

No one knew where Cthulhu had come from,

Nor how he was born,

Nor how he attained such terrifying power.

The world in which Cthulhu was imprisoned was a world created specifically for him.

An entire world…

With all its laws and boundaries…

For a single creature.

So how powerful was he?

How great?

And who was the one who had done this—who had imprisoned such a terrifying entity?

What level of power had that person reached to accomplish such a thing?

These were Arthur's thoughts from the moment he heard Howard's explanations.

Although Howard's world was not entirely devoid of strangeness—the existence of the Cthulhu Cult, its members, and their unnatural powers—

Arthur revealed nothing to him about his true strength.

He did not speak of traveling between worlds.

Nor of the system.

Nor of missions.

Instead, he chose a simpler… safer path.

He told him that the bracelet he carried was an inheritance from his ancestors,

That he had learned special combat techniques from them,

And that his goal…

Was to eliminate the members of the Cthulhu Cult.

At that, Howard smiled faintly,

As though he had finally found a companion standing on his side.

He then told Arthur about his own goal:

To eliminate the Cthulhu Cult,

And prevent them from summoning the terrifying, mysterious entity… Cthulhu.

Howard explained calmly,

And spoke about the clay and the incantation.

Those two things…

Were the key.

Through the clay, the incantation, and a human sacrifice…

The Cthulhu Cult could summon the entity into this world.

At that moment—

Ding—

'So… this is the main mission.'

Arthur thought deeply.

His knowledge of Cthulhu was still limited.

He did not know his origin,

Nor the extent of his true power.

But he knew one thing:

His power was legendary,

And he deserved titles such as World Destroyer, Mysterious Entity, and Supreme Ruler.

Arthur asked Howard about Cthulhu,

But even Howard possessed nothing beyond myths and circulating tales.

Howard took a deep breath, then said:

"A few years ago… my uncle died.

He died in a strange incident,

Where he was pushed by someone into the ocean.

According to his notes and research…

He had been getting closer and closer to the Cthulhu Cult—and to the truth of Cthulhu himself.

And so… he was killed."

He paused briefly, then continued in a heavier voice:

"Months after his death,

The police investigated the case,

And discovered the involvement of members of the Cthulhu Cult.

They located one of their sites…

And nearly fifty armed officers were sent, prepared for battle.

They surrounded the place… then attacked."

Howard raised his eyes to Arthur and asked:

"Do you know what they found?"

He did not wait for an answer.

"They found around a hundred people…

Dancing naked around a massive statue,

Eighteen feet tall,

In the likeness of Cthulhu…

Exactly like the figure carved into the clay."

His breathing grew uneven.

"They were chanting incomprehensible words,

And sacrifices were everywhere…

The bodies of innocents scattered around the statue."

"In the assault…

Nearly forty members were killed,

A few escaped,

And the rest were captured."

"The sane ones were executed,

And the insane were placed into mental asylums."

He fell silent for a moment, then said:

"Only a few remained… who were still relatively aware."

"During interrogation…

They confessed that these rituals granted them a small fragment of Cthulhu's power."

Then he changed his tone, as if imitating them:

"The Great Entity, the Supreme Ruler Cthulhu,

Granted us a portion of his power…

So that we may summon him into this wretched world.

With his descent, we shall ascend to immortality and a beautiful life…

All we need is the clay, and the ancient incantation."

Howard stopped.

Silence filled the room.

Arthur was stunned.

'So… that aura.'

The aura he had felt while fighting the cult members…

Was not theirs.

It was Cthulhu's. He had almost already understood and expected this entirely.

But now, upon reaching the truth, the matter shocked him somewhat.

How could a human body endure the energy of an entity like Cthulhu?

Even if it were only 1% of his power, it was still the power of a terrifying supreme being.

That was what Arthur still could not comprehend.

'No wonder it frightened me… a mad aura…'

If a mere fragment of his aura could transform ordinary humans to such an extent…

What would happen if he himself appeared?

'Damn it… I have to stop them… by any means necessary.'

Arthur looked at Howard seriously.

"How did your uncle obtain the incantation?

And did the rest of humanity believe in the truth of Cthulhu and his cult?"

Howard smiled faintly—almost mockingly.

"Of course not.

Humans live in a sea of ignorance.

Even if you give them light…

They will not believe unless they see the truth with their own eyes."

"The police considered the Cthulhu Cult nothing more than mad criminals.

The sane were executed,

And the rest were sent to asylums."

He then added:

"As for the incantation…

From what I understood from my uncle's notes, he obtained it after delving deeply into interrogations with members of the Cthulhu Cult.

One day, a strange man came to him and spoke about the matter.

My uncle did not know who he was, nor where he came from,

But he said only one thing:

It was a dream.

He said he dreamed of something…

And that something was the incantation.

In that dream, he saw members of the Cthulhu Cult performing the ritual in full,

He saw the incantation being recited,

And he saw Cthulhu…

Being summoned into this world."

Howard breathed slowly, then continued:

"In my belief…

I think the members of the Cthulhu Cult already possess the incantation.

I do not know how they obtained it.

Perhaps it came directly from Cthulhu,

Or perhaps someone else dreamed it, as that man did, and then delivered it to them."

"But what I am certain of…

Is that they now need only the clay."

He looked at Arthur seriously.

"The carving on the clay…

Is the key to Cthulhu's release.

That is how I understood it from my uncle's notes."

Howard stopped speaking.

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Then suddenly, Howard stood before Arthur…

And bowed slightly.

Arthur froze in place, confusion apparent on his face.

He wanted to speak, to stop him—

But before he could utter a word, Howard cried out with genuine plea in his voice:

"Please, Arthur!

Help me stop the Cthulhu Cult!

Help me destroy their plans!"

Arthur looked at him for several moments,

Then smiled calmly.

He stood, extended his hand, and gently straightened Howard's posture.

Then he looked at him with steady eyes and said in a quiet voice:

"My friend…

Didn't I tell you before?

I also want to destroy them."

"There is no need to ask.

Just tell me where they are,

And I will go…

And I will destroy them all."

His words were simple,

But they carried a strange reassurance.

Arthur smiled gently and patted Howard's shoulder,

And Howard felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from his chest.

The two sat in Howard's meeting room for long hours.

They spoke about the Cthulhu Cult,

Its members,

And Cthulhu himself.

They analyzed, discussed, and connected the scattered threads.

As time passed, the picture became clearer before Arthur.

Only one group of the Cthulhu Cult remained.

The rest had either been executed,

Sent to mental asylums,

Or exiled across the world.

It became clear that nations of the world had made tremendous sacrifices to eliminate them.

As mentioned before,

Members of the Cthulhu Cult possessed power far beyond ordinary humans.

One of them…

Was capable of killing twenty-five strong, healthy men.

When the world discovered their practices,

They were hunted without mercy,

And eliminated everywhere…

Except here.

Here, the police were weak,

And the governance weaker.

The danger of the Cthulhu Cult was not taken seriously,

And the entire burden fell upon Howard.

Years had passed since he began his campaign against them.

He trained his body,

Strengthened himself,

Became stronger than any ordinary human…

But it was not enough.

He could not defeat a full group.

He was not even capable of defeating two members together

If they attacked him at the same time.

Their aura alone…

Was enough to kill a human's will to fight.

And now—

Howard had found a companion.

Arthur.

In Howard's eyes,

Arthur was not merely a strong human.

He was a miracle.

A miracle sent from the heavens

To eliminate the Cthulhu Cult.

A miracle for humanity.

Howard continued speaking,

Telling Arthur everything he knew about the cult members and their powers.

And as time passed…

Morning arrived.

Yet the two were still talking,

Planning,

Preparing.

After a period of thought,

Arthur clapped his hands firmly and said decisively:

"Alright.

We now know their numbers,

We know their strength,

And we know where they are."

He paused for a moment before asking:

"When is the incantation scheduled to be performed?"

Arthur knew the incantation had a specific time.

If that time passed…

It would fail,

And they would be forced to wait for a very, very long time.

Howard breathed with anxiety and fear.

Arthur slowly opened his eyes, as though he did not wish to hear the answer:

"Don't tell me…"

Howard smiled with difficulty, a smile mixed with pain and helplessness.

"Today.

Today is the appointed time."

A deadly silence followed.

Then Arthur muttered in a low voice:

"Damn…"
