"Waiting for him?"
Upon hearing these words, Uchiha Moni's smile completely vanished. Trembling, he tugged at the hem of Uchiha Yuuya's sleeve. "Cousin Yuuya, are you sure you're not making a mistake? Is this little one really a guest of our clan?"
"Of course!"
Uchiha Yuuya nodded firmly, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "The Clan Head and the elders have been waiting specifically to meet Captain Aoi Ren!"
Clack, clack, clack…
Uchiha Moni was so terrified he could barely speak. Aoi Ren… wasn't that the legendary genius whom even the First Hokage himself had declared to be the future of Konoha?
He had heard that Uchiha Yuuya served under Aoi Ren as a team member, but he had always taken it as nothing more than hearsay and never given it much thought. Now, looking back, he realized he might have made a terrible mistake!
Still, a glimmer of hope lingered in Uchiha Moni's heart. What if this was all just a misunderstanding? What if his cousin and the director had teamed up to play a prank on him?
The chances were slim, but not entirely impossible…
However…
"Is this Captain Aoi Ren?" At some point, Uchiha Emiki, the sternest elder of the clan, had stepped out to greet him. On his face, which hadn't smiled in what felt like centuries, he forced out a stiff and awkward smile.
"Oh? Have we met before?"
Aoi Ren raised an eyebrow, his tone cold and distant. He had long since seen through the nature of the Uchiha clan. Just as they were portrayed in the stories, their arrogance had grown beyond all reason, and in the end, it would surely lead to their own destruction!
"Haha, Captain Aoi Ren may not recognize me, but I have had the honor of seeing you once at the Hokage Residence."
Uchiha Emiki spoke with utmost courtesy. At this point, Uchiha Moni could no longer stand on his own two feet and collapsed heavily onto the ground…
"Moni, what on earth are you doing? Making a fool of yourself in front of our honored guest?" Uchiha Emiki looked on in clear disapproval. How could a member of the Uchiha clan behave in such a disgraceful manner?
However, he had no time to deal with Moni right now. Turning back to Aoi Ren, he said with a smile, "Captain Aoi Ren, let us go inside. The banquet is about to begin."
Seeing this, Uchiha Moni closed his eyes tightly. He was done for this time. Unless… unless Aoi Ren chose to be forgiving and didn't mention what had just happened…
But was that even possible?
Aoi Ren shook his head with a smile. "I think I'll pass. I don't have an invitation, so I'm afraid I can't enter."
"Hmm?"
Uchiha Emiki turned to Yuuya with a hint of displeasure. "What is this? Yuuya, didn't you give Captain Aoi Ren the official invitation from our clan?"
Hearing this, Aoi Ren felt nothing but contempt in his heart. The Uchiha clan's arrogance truly ran deep in their blood. Did they really think that he, Aoi Ren, could only set foot in their compound if he held that piece of paper?
They failed to understand one simple truth: it was him they had invited, not the document…
But after a moment, Uchiha Emiki finally realized his mistake and shook his head with an awkward smile. "I'm getting old and losing my wits. Captain Aoi Ren, you are already standing right here—what need is there for an invitation?"
"That simply won't do. Without an invitation, I cannot pass through these gates," Aoi Ren said, shaking his head with a faint smile. "Someone told me so themselves."
"Who? Who said that?!" Uchiha Emiki and Yuuya both grew tense instantly, frowning and looking around. "Who would dare be so bold as to block Captain Aoi Ren's way?"
Gulp…
Uchiha Moni's heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might leap right out of his chest. He shrank back into the corner, trembling, and looked up at Aoi Ren with a pleading expression.
Yet…
Aoi Ren's finger pointed directly and accurately straight at his face!
Let him off the hook? Impossible!
Aoi Ren was no saint, and he certainly didn't subscribe to the foolish idea of turning the other cheek.
"I'm finished…"
Uchiha Moni collapsed to the ground, his face drained of all color. He knew that this time, he was truly done for!
