Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Containment

"Civilians have been evacuated. I'm on my way!"

Steve Rogers' hurried but firm voice came through the encrypted communication channel.

Before his voice faded, he charged toward the center of the battlefield—a chaotic mess of roars and destruction—holding his star shield like a shell fired from a cannon.

High in the sky, Tony Stark was perfectly illustrating what it meant to be a "summer mosquito."

His gold and red armor turned into a streak of light, circling the two behemoths trading blows at high speed. Palm cannons and shoulder-mounted micro-missiles poured out as if they cost nothing, ensuring everyone got their fair share.

Boom! Boom!

Energy beams and missiles accurately struck Hulk and Abomination, blowing open charred wounds. However, the recovery power of these two giants was incredible; those gruesome wounds twitched and healed almost in the blink of an eye. Aside from successfully annoying them, no real progress was made.

The bony protrusions on Abomination's back stood on end as he let out a furious roar toward the sky, though it was nothing more than impotent rage.

Hulk was different.

"Roar—!"

After being harassed for over ten seconds, Hulk's anger had clearly reached a breaking point. His massive green body jerked, muscles bulging further as he grew even larger. The Gamma radiation readings on Tony's visor flared a frantic red!

"Damn it!" Seeing this from the plane, Lin Huai's temples throbbed.

On the ground, Steve's figure had already entered the fray!

Ignoring the more imposing Hulk, he charged straight at Abomination.

Steve leaped high, concentrating all his strength into a single point. His vibranium shield traced a perfect arc, slamming hard into Abomination's left knee!

Clang!

A dull, heavy thud.

Abomination's momentum halted, and the sharp pain in his knee made him stumble. He looked down at the tiny human, a flicker of bewilderment in his eyes, which was immediately replaced by endless brutality.

"You again!"

Abomination roared, his fist—the size of a casserole dish—whistling through the air as it smashed down toward Steve's head!

Steve didn't dodge. He crouched and raised his shield over his head.

Boom!

The fist slammed squarely onto the shield, but nothing happened.

Failing with one strike, Abomination followed up with a sweep of his other arm, swatting at Steve's shield like he was hitting a fly.

This time, the force was even more terrifying. Steve could no longer hold his ground; he and his shield were swept away by the massive power, tumbling through the air before crashing violently into an abandoned shop.

"See that, Captain!" Abomination looked at the ruins with a twisted smile, mocking, "The power I possess! I'm no longer that soldier you could just push around!"

However, a second later, Steve rolled back onto his feet from the debris and brushed off the dust. Clearly, the vibranium shield had absorbed most of the impact, leaving him unharmed.

Meanwhile, in the air, Tony performed dizzying evasive maneuvers while not forgetting to open the public channel, continuing to harass Hulk with his signature sharp tongue.

"Hey! Big Green Guy! What brand are those shorts? The elasticity is amazing! Can you recommend them to my friend? He's been needing a pair of unbreakable pants lately!"

"Hulk... hates Tin Can!"

The enraged Hulk roared, his combat intelligence strangely sharpening in his fury.

He gave up chasing the agile Tony and instead bent down, his massive, shovel-like hands grabbing a huge chunk of concrete and half a car wreck from the ground.

Then, under Lin Huai's horrified gaze, Hulk's arms became green windmills, hurling every piece of debris into the sky toward Tony like cannonballs!

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

Countless fragments of various sizes, carrying terrifying kinetic energy, formed an airtight barrage of death!

"Oh, shit..." Alarms blared continuously inside Tony's visor.

On the plane, Lin Huai's eyelids twitched as he shouted into the communicator, "Tony, you're a real natural for a Hunter! Stop provoking him! I'm afraid things will completely spiral out of control!"

"What Hunter?" Tony's voice sounded a bit distorted amidst the rain of debris. "Lin, can you stop talking in riddles! Besides, you're the one who told me to keep them contained! Just tell me, is it working or not?"

The effect was outstanding!

The fragments were flying too fast and at tricky angles. Tony dodged over a dozen, but ultimately couldn't avoid them all. A head-sized rock struck him precisely, causing a shower of sparks from the armor's thrusters. He spun out of control like a broken kite and crashed headlong into a nearby office building.

With a loud boom, the glass curtain wall on the thirteenth floor was shattered.

"Sir, the right leg thruster is ten percent damaged. Power output is unstable," Jarvis reported calmly.

Having dealt with the mosquito in the sky, Hulk's massive head turned toward the other side of the battlefield.

Steve truly was a battle-hardened Warrior. Relying on his agile movement and that invincible shield, he actually managed to keep Abomination pinned down, preventing him from causing further destruction to the city.

But Hulk didn't care about tactics.

Seeing Abomination, the fire of rage in his eyes burned even brighter. He grabbed a flattened car from the roadside like a toy and charged forward with giant strides.

Seeing this, Steve immediately stepped sideways, attempting to block with his shield.

However, the enraged Hulk just gave a casual swing.

The car acted like a giant flyswatter, slamming directly into Steve's shield. The terrifying brute force was unreasonable, swatting Steve away once more. This time, he crashed into the first-floor lobby of another office building.

"Shit..." Steve struggled to get up from the wreckage of a pile of desks, but suddenly froze.

Beneath a collapsed corner, he saw an Asian youth who looked to be in his early twenties, shivering while clutching a camera.

"There's another civilian!"

Steve didn't have time to think. He leaped up, rushed over, grabbed the youth's arm, and ran outside.

"Why didn't you run? It's so dangerous and you're still taking pictures! Aren't you afraid of dying?" he roared at the youth.

"I... I didn't have time to run..." The youth wore a helpless and terrified expression, being dragged along while still protecting his camera and a stack of manuscripts. "I'm afraid of dying, but I'm more afraid of being poor! If I can't pay rent tomorrow, I'll be sleeping on the streets! These photos, these scenes... they can get me some money and even be written into my novel!"

With that, the youth waved the stack of sweat-soaked manuscripts in his hand.

These words instantly silenced Captain America, who had been about to scold him further.

Just then, a shrill scream came from outside; it was Abomination.

Steve's expression changed. He immediately shouted through the channel to Natasha, who was providing support on the perimeter, "Natasha! First-floor lobby, there's a civilian who needs rescue! Move!"

After saying that, he pushed the youth into a relatively safe corner and charged back out, shield in hand.

The moment he rushed out of the building, he was so shocked by the sight before him that his footsteps faltered.

Hulk, now even larger than before, was violently mounted on top of Abomination, completely ignoring the latter's resistance. Those two shovel-like giant hands were swinging left and right, delivering a series of slaps so fast they left afterimages on Abomination's face!

Slap! Slap! Slap! Slap! Slap!

The crisp sounds even drowned out the sirens coming from the distance.

At that moment, a piercing sonic boom echoed from the sky!

Tony had returned to the battlefield!

"Jarvis, 'Warhammer Protocol,' full power!"

Following his command, a massive metal block ejected from the back of the mark armor. Through a series of complex mechanical transformations, it instantly extended and locked into place, becoming a massive Tungsten Warhammer full of primitive, violent aesthetics! Tony flipped in the air and firmly gripped the heavy handle!

From high in the sky, like a meteorite of divine punishment, he trailed a long plume of flame. Gripping the giant hammer with both hands and raising it high, he charged down with full force toward the two giants entangled below!
