Chapter 426 - Vile People from Vile Places

Teased by Jiang Cheng, Huang Yuqi couldn't help but cover her mouth and laugh out loud.

When she first started wearing this outfit, she was indeed shocked by her own appearance.

However, few people usually came here, and the children didn't question her outfit when she was with them.

After all, being able to wear a clean set of clothes here already made one a respectable person.

"I bought this at the Market. It's a hassle to buy clothes here, and my budget doesn't allow me to buy nice ones. Besides, it's not good to dress up too beautifully while volunteering here; some of the children don't even have enough to eat or wear. Most importantly, there's another reason..."

Speaking of this, Huang Yuqi's expression darkened slightly. She glanced at Jiang Cheng and continued, "As you can see, there's only me and Principal Zheng here. It's not particularly safe to live here."

Hearing this, Jiang Cheng couldn't help but frown.

She couldn't be referring to Zheng Qiu, could she?

Seeing Jiang Cheng frown, Huang Yuqi immediately waved her hands and explained, "I'm not talking about Principal Zheng. Principal Zheng is married. It's just that as a girl out here, I have to be a bit cautious. When I first arrived, some villagers would occasionally wander around here. It was fine when Principal Zheng was around, but sometimes he goes home and isn't here at night..."

Once Huang Yuqi said that, Jiang Cheng understood immediately.

No wonder her first instinct upon seeing Jiang Cheng was to close the window; it was mainly because of this.

Jiang Cheng had heard a lot about the risks of Volunteer Teaching before.

After all, the saying 'vile people come from vile places' isn't without reason.

The more isolated a place is, the lower the quality of the villagers' character tends to be.

Some people won't respect or care for you just because you're here to volunteer; instead, they might take advantage of the fact that you're alone and without support in a strange place.

The greatest difficulty and risk for female volunteer teachers is not just the harsh environment, but more importantly, learning how to protect themselves.

Moreover, gossipmongers and busybodies are mostly found in these small villages.

Just as Jiang Cheng wanted to chat more with Huang Yuqi, he heard the voices of Zheng Qiu and a group of children returning.

He was washing his hands by the well cover outside while calling indoors, "Aiya, finally back. I took a shortcut just now, and the sole of my shoe came off while climbing the mountain. Sigh, I'll have to go to the Market tomorrow to buy some shoe glue, or I'll be stuck with only sandals to wear."

Hearing Zheng Qiu's complaining, Jiang Cheng stepped out of the inner room and called out to him, "Principal Zheng!"

Seeing that it was Jiang Cheng, Zheng Qiu's face immediately lit up with joy.

He immediately pulled his hands out of the water bucket and wiped his wet hands on his clothes.

Then he picked up a towel by the bucket to wipe his sweat, quickly tidied his clothes, and walked toward Jiang Cheng with a broad smile.

He excitedly patted Jiang Cheng's shoulder and said, "Jiang Cheng, you're here! The Village Committee sent people over early this morning to help. I just went over there and told them about your kind deed last night. Once the Village Committee Secretary found out, he was very grateful and really wanted to thank you in person."

After Zheng Qiu finished speaking, some children ran over from the side.

The children immediately surrounded Jiang Cheng upon seeing him.

Some of the children were very excited, while others were quite shy.

However, all the children thanked Jiang Cheng in unison.

"Brother Jiang Cheng, thank you!"

"Thank you, Brother."

Seeing some of the children wearing the new down jackets he had donated and the happy smiles on their faces, Jiang Cheng couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction.

Although his donation wasn't entirely of his own volition—in fact, without Xia Meng, Jiang Cheng might not have thought of doing charity at all—

at this moment, he still experienced the inner fulfillment of doing good deeds for the first time through these children.

Jiang Cheng He touched the children's hair..

However, he soon noticed that although everyone was wearing new clothes, a few children were still wearing worn-out sandals, and some were even barefoot.

Jiang Cheng frowned in confusion. "Weren't you given shoes yesterday? Why aren't you wearing them?"

Seeing Jiang Cheng ask, the barefoot students looked down at their feet, their expressions unchanged.

They even said with a grin, as if it were perfectly normal, "My mom said if I wear shoes to school, they'll get dirty and break easily. I should save them to wear during festivals."
