Seeing the longing all over Chen Ming's face, Jiang Cheng didn't quite know how to respond.
He knew he could still come back occasionally, but Mom and Dad probably never could.
Even if they did, it would be years from now.
Jiang Cheng made something up on the spot. "Oh, they went traveling for New Year and stopped by my dad's hometown for a while; they're not back yet. I'm the only one in Chengdu."
Hearing this, the lady boss Wang Rong chipped in, "So that's how it is. Your family always spent New Year in Chengdu. No wonder I missed your mom this year—felt odd."
These neighbors had lived side by side for over a decade. It wasn't just them who felt out of sorts; Jiang Cheng knew his parents felt the same.
After chatting with the couple a while longer, Jiang Cheng walked out with his takeaway hot-and-dry noodles.
Watching him climb into the rolls-royce parked at the curb,
Chen Ming said to Wang Rong, "Woman, is that a rolls-royce Xiao Jiang just got into?"
"Yeah, I saw the little gold figurine."
"Old Jiang was still driving an Audi last time. They must've struck gold. Before they moved I saw him switch to a black Mercedes-Benz, and now it's a rolls-royce."
Wang Rong replied, "Of course they've made money; otherwise they wouldn't have moved to Deer Lake. Real estate's booming—anyone in construction rides the wave."
"True. That kid Jiang Cheng has it made—only child, textbook Second-generation rich."
Hearing that, Wang Rong's eyes lit up. "Say, if our girl saw Xiao Jiang, maybe…"
Chen Ming cut her off, "Stop daydreaming. Xiao Jiang's several years younger than our daughter, and didn't she say she's already dating?"
"What do you know? A girl three years older is holding a gold brick. Besides, we don't approve, so it doesn't count as real love—some back-of-beyond nonsense."
"Enough. Will our opinion matter? She's not coming home this year. Keep opposing and maybe she never comes back."
That stoked Wang Rong's anger even more.
"Fine, don't come back. We raised her all her life, and she turns on us because some guy says 'I love you.' Don't bother coming back at all…"
"All right, calm down. Young people don't understand anything."
Jiang Cheng knew nothing of this little episode. Right then he was in the back seat of the rolls-royce, eating steaming hot-and-dry noodles off the pull-out table.
The rear dining tray in the rolls-royce was rock-steady;
even small speed bumps didn't jostle the food.
The prosecutor kept nodding as he ate.
"Mm, tastes exactly as I remember—delicious. Make sure you finish yours later."
Hearing that, Wang Sheng, who was driving, felt a surge of gratitude.
"Thank you, young master. Oh, Miss Wang seems to have booked a flight back to Demon City."
"Wang Yuyan?"
"Yes, she seems to want to surprise you."
"When?"
"Three days from now."
"Got it. Don't let her know that I know."
Wang Sheng gave Jiang Cheng a big thumbs-up in the mirror.
"Understood. The moment I heard, I told everyone around her to act clueless. It might shave off a bit of the surprise, but if you're busy when she lands, that'd be worse."
Jiang Cheng felt a faint dig in those words and glanced up at Wang Sheng.
"Seriously? You're a scumbag yourself—how dare you take a jab at me?"
Wang Sheng scratched his head sheepishly. "Young master, I didn't mean it like that. I'm just worried you might crash and burn."
"Crash? If I crash, what good are you guys?"
Feeling the pressure land squarely on him, Wang Sheng straightened up.
"You're right, sir. Rest assured, with our professionalism the scenario I mentioned will never happen. I'll brief the team at once to tighten oversight and secure your rear."
"Good, good—high level of awareness."
