Chapter 55 - Chapter 55 : The Hidden Sanctuary

The cold wind howled through the ancient forest as a lone figure sprinted between towering trees. His breathing was ragged, and beads of sweat rolled down his pale face despite the freezing air.

An elf….

His silver-green cloak was torn in several places, revealing fresh wounds across his shoulder and arm. Blood dripped from his fingertips as he forced himself to keep running.

Behind him echoed the sound of heavy footsteps.

"They went this way!"

"Don't let him escape!"

"Spread out!"

The voices grew closer.

The elf refused to look back.

Every second he wasted could become his last.

He leaped over tangled roots and pushed aside thick branches, his heart pounding violently inside his chest. The forest seemed endless. Trees older than kingdoms stretched toward the heavens, blocking nearly every ray of sunlight. Thick vines wrapped around enormous trunks, while strange flowers glowed faintly beneath the shadows.

This was no ordinary forest.

It was a place few dared to enter.

After several exhausting minutes, the shouting behind him gradually faded.

The elf slowed his pace just enough to catch his breath.

"…I lost them."

He leaned against a massive tree, struggling to steady his breathing.

But relief lasted only a moment.

Looking around, he realized something far worse.

"…Where am I?"

Silence….

Not a bird sang….

Not an insect chirped...

Only the distant rustling of leaves answered him.

He had escaped his pursuers…

…only to become lost in one of the most dangerous forests on the continent.

Every adventurer knew the legends surrounding this place.

Powerful magical beasts roamed these woods.

Creatures ranked B-Class…

A-Class…

Some stories even spoke of monsters beyond human understanding.

The elf swallowed nervously…

"If I go back…"

He glanced toward the direction from which he had come.

"…those soldiers will kill me."

His grip tightened around the hilt of his sword.

"If I move forward…"

His eyes wandered deeper into the endless darkness.

"…I may become food for a monster."

Neither path offered hope.

After several long moments, he closed his eyes.

"I've already come this far."

Opening them again, his expression hardened with determination.

"Better to die searching for a miracle than surrender."

Without another word, he stepped deeper into the unknown.

The forest grew quieter with every step….

The trees became larger…..

The air became colder…..

Even the light seemed afraid to enter this forgotten place.

Then…

He stopped….

Hidden between enormous roots and hanging vines stood the entrance to a massive cave.

Unlike the wild surroundings, the cave looked… ancient.

Its stone walls were covered with intricate carvings that time itself had failed to erase. Strange symbols stretched across the entrance, each etched with unbelievable precision. Moss covered parts of the stone, yet the craftsmanship remained breathtaking.

At the center, carved into the rock, was a single symbol.

M5….

The elf frowned,

"…What is this place?"

He slowly approached, unable to hide his curiosity.

There was something about the cave,

It felt…

Majestic….

As though countless centuries of history slumbered within its walls.

An invisible force seemed to invite him forward while warning him to turn back at the same time.

For reasons he could not explain…

The cave felt strangely familiar.

Like a forgotten memory lingering at the edge of his mind.

"…I've never been here before."

"So why does it feel…"

"…like this place has been waiting for someone?"

Unaware of the eyes upon him, the elf stepped inside.

Far above the cave entrance…

Two silent figures watched from the branches of enormous trees.

Black armor.

Long shadow-forged bows.

No faces.

Only glowing silver eyes beneath featureless helmets.

Shadow Archers.

Neither reached for an arrow.

Neither spoke.

They simply observed the lone visitor in complete silence.

Several moments passed.

Only after the elf disappeared into the darkness did their forms begin to dissolve.

Like mist scattered by the wind…

The two Shadow Archers vanished without leaving a trace.

Inside the cave, darkness swallowed everything.

The elf carefully moved forward, one cautious step at a time. Water dripped from the ceiling, echoing through the vast tunnel. The air was cool and carried a faint scent of stone mixed with something ancient.

He placed a hand against the rough wall, using it to guide himself.

"How deep does this place go…?"

Minutes passed....

The narrow tunnel slowly widened.

The darkness ahead began to fade.

A soft golden light appeared in the distance.

The elf narrowed his eyes.

"…Light?"

He quickened his pace.

As he reached the end of the tunnel…

He froze…..

His eyes widened in complete disbelief.

Before him lay an enormous hidden world.

A vast underground village stretched across a cavern so immense that its ceiling disappeared into darkness high above. Crystal formations embedded in the stone emitted a gentle blue glow, while streams of clear water flowed between neatly built stone pathways. Ancient houses, crafted from black stone and polished timber, stood in perfect harmony with the cavern itself, their warm lights shining through their windows.

Massive roots from the forest above pierced the ceiling, intertwining with glowing vines that illuminated gardens flourishing beneath the earth. Children laughed in the distance as villagers carried baskets, tended small fields, and spoke quietly among themselves, as though this hidden sanctuary had existed for centuries beyond the reach of the outside world.

The elf stood motionless.

His heartbeat echoed in his ears.

"…A village…"

His voice trembled.

"…Inside a cave?"

Far beyond the village, almost hidden by the shimmering light of the crystals, rose a colossal fortress of black stone.

Silent…..

Ancient….

Watching over the underground world like an eternal guardian.

And for the first time…

The elf felt that perhaps escaping into this forest had not been an accident.

It had been fate...
