Chapter 49: The Messages
Driven by that fleeting spark of curiosity, Serena Blackwood reached slowly toward the phone resting on the coffee table. "Since you're too scared to answer it yourself, let me handle this. I'll just tell her you stepped out and left your phone behind."
The instant her fingertips hovered over the sleek black device, Liora Voss snatched it away with blinding speed.
Serena's brow furrowed a fraction, a rare flicker of genuine confusion softening her hazel eyes. "Hmm?"
Flustered reactions like this almost never appeared on her sister. When it came to romantic entanglements, Liora was usually the one who orchestrated every move with ice-cold precision.
Only after securing the phone did Liora realize how overeager her grab had looked, but her expression stayed perfectly neutral. "She doesn't know I have a sister."
Serena countered smoothly, "Then I'll say I'm a friend."
Liora's voice remained calm and even. "I already told her I don't have any friends."
