Chapter 258: Beyond the Door
The pool water was warm, but the air against their heads was cooler. The contrast made everything feel slightly unreal, as if the heat had risen into Elias's face and left his thoughts floating somewhere above him.
It was the kind of warmth that made bad decisions seem survivable. The water held their bodies while the cool air kept their minds from settling. In a state like that, a person could mistake impulse for courage. A person could do something wrong and convince themselves, for one reckless second, that it had always been waiting to happen.
He had swallowed water when he fell. Droplets still clung to his lashes and traced bright paths down his cheeks. His eyes shone when he looked at Giselle, and in their green depths she could see her own reflection with unsettling clarity.
Neither of them moved.
Then the reflection drew closer.
Elias leaned in.
