The roar of the machinery in Sanctuary had subsided, replaced by the low hum of the magnetic gates now containing the predator within the isolation zone, keeping The Huntsman imprisoned.
The surrounding atmosphere fell instantly silent. Yet, somehow, this silence felt even more menacing than the chaotic events that had just unfolded.
Behind the humming, vibrating blue energy bars, the figure of The Huntsman remained on his knees. His head, encased in the porcelain mask, was bowed, his torn cloak draping across the iron floor.
A moment later, he began to lift his head, and a voice emanated from behind the mask—a voice no longer cold and melodic, but grating and heavily laced with static distortion.
"You have nimble hands for a journalist whose career was ruined by betrayal, Louise Vane," The Huntsman stated, his tone piercing and authoritative.
Meanwhile, Louise Vane, who was attempting to clean the blistering burns on her hands with some medical alcohol she had found nearby, flinched violently at his words.
The sharp sting searing her skin was entirely eclipsed by a sudden, icy chill creeping down her spine.
"Don't listen to him, Louise," Elena growled, pressing a hand against a gash on her temple. She stood near the console, her other hand maintaining a death grip on the lockdown lever.
"He's nothing but the remnants of an Elite Spire manipulation program," Elena continued, trying to ground Louise's fracturing composure.
"Program?" The Huntsman let out a short, hollow laugh accompanied by the grinding of metal. "Elena... you have always viewed the world in binary: black or white, fighter or traitor. But why don't you ask your new friend here... what really happened at The Daily Lux five years ago? Why was a talented journalist suddenly discarded into the slums near The Sink?"
Across the room, the burns on Louise's waist and hands throbbed in rhythm with her increasingly erratic heartbeat.
What The Huntsman had just dragged into the light was a scarred past she had buried deep within the recesses of her soul, accompanied only by piles of empty liquor bottles and industrial dust.
"He knows your name, Louise." Elena slowly turned around, her sharp eyes now narrowing with heavy suspicion.
"How is it possible for an Elite Spire combat unit to possess the personal file of a low-tier journalist?"
"Because she is not just a journalist," The Huntsman's voice answered rapidly, vibrating through the iron floorplates.
The sound felt unnervingly close, as if he were whispering the words directly into Louise's ear.
"Louise Vane wasn't exiled merely for writing a flawed news piece. The real reason she was thrown away is that she sold a list of rebel informants to Science Corp in exchange for her father's safety. A father who, ironically, still ended up on the operating table as an experimental test subject for the success of Project X (The Lazarus Protocol)."
Elena, reeling from this revelation, slowly released her grip on the lockdown lever and stepped toward Louise. The atmosphere within Sanctuary instantly shifted into a suffocating psychological battlefield.
"Is it true, Louise? Did you work with them?"
Louise couldn't breathe. A Neuro-Resonance Data Retrieval sequence triggered in her mind; the phantom image of her father's face and the very list of names she had handed over with trembling hands five years ago suddenly flashed before her eyes, forcibly dredged up by the lingering purple frequency in the air.
"I... I had no choice," Louise whispered hoarsely, hot tears of anger and shame beginning to stream down her cheeks.
"Everyone has a choice, Louise!" Elena snapped.
"We lost an entire district in Sector 4 because of a data leak five years ago. Was that all your doing?" Amidst the crushing tension, the reaction canister in the isolation chamber began to vibrate softly once again.
Elena stared at the "god-blood" sample with a newfound, burning hatred.
To her, that fluid was no longer a beacon of hope to bring down the Elite Spire; it was a death magnet that had dragged destruction and doubt right into her own home.
"This thing," Elena pointed at the purple tube, her finger trembling violently, "it corrupts everything it touches. It ruins our systems, it tears open old wounds that should have stayed buried... and now, it's tearing us apart. It's a truly pathetic reality."
Meanwhile, Louise winced as she roughly bandaged her own hand with gauze. "That's exactly what he wants, Elena! He wants you to doubt me so you'll disengage the lockdown!"
Elena fell dead silent. She walked slowly toward the isolation chamber, her hand hovering hesitantly over the venting button.
The seed of doubt, mixed with the damning revelations she had just heard, made her question everything, slowly eroding her faith in their entire mission.
"Perhaps the Elite Spire is right. Humans weren't meant to wield this kind of power; it can only be controlled by the elites."
"But... there is also the possibility they are lying, and the best way to win this is by obliterating the catalyst... along with whoever dragged this curse into our sanctuary."
Behind the magnetic gates, The Huntsman slowly stood back up to his full, imposing height. Though his mechanical chassis was still venting faint wisps of smoke, his porcelain mask now stared directly at Elena.
"Do it, Elena. Vent the sample, cast out the traitorous journalist, and crawl back into your rat hole until I return to collect your life."
The dynamic in the room grew unbearably taut. Somehow, the tables had completely turned, and Elena was slowly succumbing to his psychological manipulation.
Meanwhile, Louise Vane held her breath. She was pushed to the absolute brink, trapped between a predator who knew her every weakness and an ally who now looked at her as if she were a virus more dangerous than Celux-9 radiation.

Author's Note & GlossaryScientific Terms and Glossary
- Project X (Lazarus Protocol): A hypothetical experimental procedure in Elite Spire biotechnology aimed at extending the lifespan of living subjects and reviving/sustaining cellular functions in subjects clinically declared dead. Using "God-Blood" as a catalyst, this protocol frequently fails due to molecular instability, reducing subjects into "test materials" completely stripped of full human consciousness.
- Audio Static Distortion: Interference in sound signals caused by electromagnetic fluctuations. In The Huntsman's case, his porcelain mask functions as a voice modulator. As his energy depletes, his vocoder circuitry experiences interference, creating a harsh, unnatural, and raspy voice.
- Venting (Pneumatic Waste Disposal): The process of rapidly depressurizing a chamber by utilizing air pressure differentials (P1>P2). In Sanctuary, this system is designed to flush biological contaminants into deeper subterranean disposal areas. If Elena activates this, the sample and anything near it would potentially be sucked out by the extreme vacuum force.
- Neuro-Resonance Data Retrieval: A process where specific frequencies forcibly stimulate the hippocampus (the brain's memory center). The "God-Blood" emits a resonance that triggers traumatic memories (such as the face of Louise's father), making it feel as if past events are visually recurring in real-time (kinetic hallucinations).
- Medical Alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol - C3H8O): The antiseptic fluid Louise uses. Chemically, the alcohol denatures the proteins of germs, but on a second-degree burn, it acutely stimulates nociceptor nerve endings, causing an intensely painful burning sensation that actively worsens Louise's physiological stress.

A little extra message from the author, hehe.
This chapter explores how information is a weapon far sharper than an electromagnetic blade. Both in this world and the real world, personal data is our greatest vulnerability.
Here, we see that The Huntsman's success in infiltrating the nervous system via resonance doesn't just fry machines; it rips open the darkest drawers of memory. Trust is a rare commodity in the Undercity, and this chapter shows just how easily that commodity can be shattered.
That's all I wanted to say, and thank you for loyally reading this story! Oh right, don't forget to vote and comment to keep me, writing as Zan Apexion alongside my team, motivated to continue creating. See you again, everyone! ☺
