Chapter 42 - Tempering the Body with an Immortal Herb, the Supreme Bone Stirrs

After the meal, Yang Yuan and Dugu Yan came to the edge of the Medicine Garden.

The latter eagerly began introducing the Spiritual Plants inside to Yang Yuan.

She didn't know every herb in the garden, but she recognized well over half.

Most of the ones she knew had been transplanted from elsewhere by Dugu Bo.

As for the Immortal Herbs originally growing outside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, not even Dugu Bo could identify them all, let alone Dugu Yan.

Yang Yuan had heard Dugu Bo say

that among those Spiritual Plants the only one he recognized was a single Chrysanthemum.

The reason he knew it was largely because his old rival, Chrysanthemum Douluo, possessed that very Spirit.

However, Dugu Bo's knowledge went no further than recognition; he didn't know its effects.

After touring the garden once,

the three of them—Yang Yuan, Dugu Bo, and Dugu Yan—stood before a melon-shaped object the size of two fists, shimmering gold.

Dugu Bo exclaimed, "Xiao Yuan, you can really discern the properties of these Immortal Herbs?"

Yang Yuan smiled faintly and replied calmly, "My Spirit can see through the essence of things; naturally, discerning herb properties is no problem."

Dugu Bo couldn't help sighing in admiration.

"What a miraculous Spirit!"

"Before your Spirit, even the Seraphim Spirit of Spirit Hall probably pales."

Meanwhile Dugu Yan curiously pointed at the golden melon and asked,

"So, Little Brother Xiao Yuan, does this golden sweet potato have something special about it?"

Dugu Bo also looked over, intrigued.

Since Yang Yuan could read the herbs' properties and had brought them here, there had to be a reason.

Yang Yuan nodded and explained, "This golden gourd is an extremely rare Spirit Medicine; I can see vast, dense energy stored inside."

That's it?

Dugu Bo instinctively felt the golden object was extraordinary,

yet if it merely held rich energy, that seemed nothing special.

His garden contained many Spiritual Plants, several brimming with dense energy.

Still, he didn't recognize this particular golden gourd,

assuming it was just an ordinary herb.

Seeing Dugu Bo's doubt, Yang Yuan squatted, flicked the golden object and said,

"This is no common gourd; its energy ranks in the garden's top ten, and it holds a wisp of pure True Dragon power."

"I can say this gourd will benefit both Sister Dugu and Grandpa Dugu immensely."

"Not merely in Spirit Power Level, but at the level of the Spirit itself."

At those words Dugu Yan felt nothing, yet Dugu Bo's eyes flashed.

A boost at the Spirit level—could this gourd help their Spirits evolve?

If so, its value would be enormous!

Dugu Bo said gravely, "This old man is long past his prime; I have no need of it."

Dugu Yan quickly shook her head.

"Grandpa, you take it. My talent is limited; giving such a treasure to me would be wasteful."

Yang Yuan chuckled. "All right, stop deferring to each other; there are plenty of good things in Grandpa Dugu's garden."

Startled, Dugu Bo wondered:

What else here could rival that golden gourd?

Yang Yuan led them to a snow-white, crystal-clear orchid.

He recognized it: the eight-petal immortal orchidOscar had consumed in the original first book.

Mild and mellow, it could stabilize foundations, cleanse Meridians, purge Impurities, and accelerate a Spirit Master's Cultivation—upper-middle grade even among Immortal Herbs.

Though not as perfectly suited to them as the earth dragon golden gourd, it still offered boundless benefits.

After detailing its effects, Yang Yuan told the pair, "Grandpa Dugu can take the golden gourd; Sister Dugu can take this orchid to remedy her Innate defect in spirit power."

Dugu Yan sighed. "To think I, with Innate seven levels, would one day be told I have an Innate defect."

Dugu Bo chuckled nearby.

"Yan Yan, Grandpa's Innate is nine levels; Xiao Yuan's must be ten."

"Compared with us, yours is indeed lacking."

Stomping her foot, Dugu Yan grumbled,

"Damned Innate level—why couldn't it be higher?"

While they talked, Yang Yuan carefully plucked the eight-petal immortal orchid and handed it to her.

"Sister Dugu, take it here and now; no special method needed—just chew, swallow, and circulate your spirit power to refine it."

As she reached for it, something occurred to her and she paused mid-gesture.

"Little Brother Xiao Yuan, is this orchid useful to you?"

Reading her thoughts, Yang Yuan smiled. "Don't worry, there are other herbs here suited to me."

Reassured, she accepted the orchid, sat cross-legged, and began to ingest and refine it under their watch.

Yang Yuan's dual-pupils flashed, letting him observe every step of the refining.

Direct ingestion inevitably caused some medicinal loss.

His left eye turned silver, and milky-white Life Force Power shot out, enveloping Dugu Yan and sealing in the escaping potency.

After that, Yang Yuan stood guard a while longer.

Dugu Bo spoke up. "Xiao Yuan, didn't you say there are herbs here for you? Go take one; this old man will act as Protector."

"All right."

Without ceremony, Yang Yuan swept his gaze and fixed on a large purple chrysanthemum nearby—the very Chrysanthemum.

Lustrous purple and seamless, it gave off no scent; its central stamens rose half a chi above the petals, tinted pale gold.

A neutral Immortal Herb, it could open the Meridians and foster a diamond-hard body.

The original account was exaggerated, yet it did have real benefits.

Stepping forward,

he coated his hand with Life Force Power, plucked the flower, sat, and began to consume it.

Moments later the entire Chrysanthemum was inside him, and a faint golden glow cloaked his skin.

Inside his body,

a jade-like precious bone glimmered, brilliant runes writhing as if alive, forming tiny black holes that greedily drank the flower's energy.

Yang Yuan's mind shook;

he could sense a new Divine Ability taking shape upon his Supreme Bone.
