Chapter 462 - Chapter 463: Incredible! Defense Wins Championships

"In Game 5 of the Finals, Blake finished with 50 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals, and 8 blocks.

"Everyone knows that stat line is incredible.

"But just how incredible is it?"

Van Gundy paused there.

Still visibly excited, he let the suspense build for a moment before continuing.

"In NBA playoff history, there have only been four instances of a player recording a 50+5+5 stat line in a single game.

"And only three players have ever done it.

"Michael Jordan, the 'God of Basketball.'

"Vince Carter, 'Half Man, Half Amazing.'

"And the 'Black Mamba,' Kobe Bryant.

"Jordan did it twice.

"In the first round of the 1985-86 playoffs, Jordan faced the Celtics without Pippen alongside him.

"He went up against a Boston team led by Bird, McHale, and Parish and finished with 63 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

"But the Bulls still lost.

"Then, in the first round of the 1991-92 playoffs, Jordan's Bulls faced Miami.

"In Game 3, Jordan scored 50 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and handed out 5 assists to lead Chicago to victory.

"By then, he had Pippen beside him.

"Vince Carter did it in the 2000-01 Eastern Conference Semifinals, when his Raptors faced Allen Iverson and the 76ers.

"In Game 3, 'Half Man, Half Amazing' finished with 50 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists and led Toronto to a win.

"Then, in the first round of the 2005-06 playoffs, the 'Black Mamba' Kobe Bryant and the Lakers faced Steve Nash and the Suns.

"In Game 6, Kobe put up 50 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

"But the Lakers still lost.

"Yes.

"You heard that correctly.

"Putting up 50+5+5 in a playoff game is something only players on the level of Jordan, Carter, and Kobe have managed to do.

"That should tell you just how difficult it is.

"And yet tonight, 'Monster Rookie' Blake didn't just reach that level.

"He went even further.

"Fifty points, 12 rebounds, 8 steals, and 8 blocks.

"Blake joined that elite company while also producing a 50+8+8+8 stat line, something even those legends never accomplished.

"That gives him another new single-game playoff record.

"And there's more.

"Nine consecutive games with 40-plus points.

"Seven consecutive games with 50-plus points.

"Blake continues to extend his own postseason scoring streaks.

"What he's doing is unbelievable."

Mike Breen sucked in a sharp breath after hearing all of that.

It took both commentators a moment to process just how outrageous Blake's numbers were.

Then Mike Breen continued.

"When I look at tonight's game and compare it with Blake's previous performances, I think the biggest reason Phoenix won is obvious.

"Defense.

"Scoring 50 points is incredible.

"But remember, Blake scored 50-plus in three of the previous four games, and Phoenix still lost.

"Tonight was different.

"Tonight he added 8 steals and 8 blocks.

"Those numbers are absurd, but more importantly, they were the difference between winning and losing."

"Exactly."

Van Gundy nodded.

"This is the playoffs.

"This is the stage where everything comes down to winning and chasing a championship.

"Offense can win you games.

"But defense wins championships.

"Tonight, Blake threw himself onto the floor again and again, dove out of bounds, and fought for every possession.

"That effort gave Phoenix the win and pulled them back from the brink.

"And it reminded everyone of something simple.

"If you want to win at this level, you have to defend."

"Absolutely."

After the game, the passionate discussion between Mike Breen and Van Gundy spread rapidly online.

Within minutes, two topics had surged near the top of the trending rankings.

#Blake: 50-Point Near Quadruple-Double#

#Defense Wins Championships#

Both exploded in popularity almost immediately.

That alone showed just how much attention Game 5 between Phoenix and Miami had attracted.

The discussions underneath were flooded with thousands upon thousands of comments.

"50 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals, and 8 blocks.

"My God. Can someone really put up numbers like that in the Finals?!"

"Apparently they can!"

"Hahaha! Our own Blake just did it.

"And he did it as a rookie!"

"Blake is an absolute monster!"

"That's insane!"

"Completely insane!"

"Eight steals, eight blocks, and twelve rebounds.

"Blake gave absolutely everything he had tonight.

"He pushed himself as hard as he possibly could."

"That was incredible!"

"Blake has always worked hard and taken every game seriously.

"It's just that we want a championship so badly, and we want Blake to win so badly, that maybe we expected too much from him."

"Yeah."

"I was wrong.

"I regret criticizing Blake before.

"I owe him an apology."

"I'm sorry, Blake!"

"From now on, I'm backing Blake all the way."

"Me too!"

"Haha, if Blake saw that everyone finally understands how hard he's fighting, he'd probably be pretty happy.

"And I'm sure he'll give everything he has in the next game too.

"Maybe he really can complete the comeback!"

"Exactly!"

"And seriously, once the defense stepped up, winning suddenly became a lot easier."

"That's basketball."

"Exactly. Look at Miami.

"The Heat Big Three are all elite offensive players, but a huge part of Miami's success comes from [defense leading to fast break]."

"Defense wins championships. That's always been true."

"Hey, everyone's talking about Blake's defense, but am I the only one remembering that this guy is supposed to be a center?

"He had eight steals in one game and then buried a logo three over LeBron to put the game away!"

"You're not the only one!"

"Exactly!

"Eight steals and a dagger from the logo.

"Seriously, what kind of center does that?!"

"At this point, Blake has completely changed what the center position can look like."

"Changed it?

"He's redefining it!"

"Exactly!"

"Hahaha!"

"Honestly, I stopped thinking of Blake as a normal center a long time ago."

"Same!"

"Agreed!"
