Dawn broke, and through the curtains, little light slipped its way inside the crown prince's chamber. The air felt different... everything felt wrong. Under the thick, heavy silk sheets, a little figure stirred, and then slowly his hands went for the space beside him.
The moment he felt its emptiness, his heart dropped. He yanked upwards, his eyes snapping open, every evidence of drowsiness fading instantly. But before he could reach out and begin searching, realization dawned on him. The spot wasn't cold... it hadn't been long since Caelan left.
Rain's eyes snapped to the nightstand and the velvet box still on it, as if he had placed it there the night before. To others, it was wealth, something so precious it was priceless, but to Rain, it was nothing short of a leash and evidence of his entrapment in a circle he couldn't break free from.
