"We can still salvage this—"
Crown Prince Karim stopped walking.
"Salvage?" His voice was soft and low. "You failed to notice Rain has lost it all. You do not understand the depths of a ritual of such caliber, and even if..." Karim paused. His eyes burned with unshed tears, and his gaze flickered upward, trying hard to fight back the tears. He swallowed hard, then turned toward his sister.
"Kamilia," he whispered gently. "Saving the crown prince is one thing... but saving a man publicly disowned by his people, disregarded by his family, and abandoned by the same hands he held all his life? I am sorry, but what is there to safe? Because I see nothing."
Kamilia opened her mouth, but no words came out. She stood and watched Karim's back fade into the distance, and behind her, Kate watched her back, leaning against one of the hallway pillars. A small smile played on her lips. Just as Kamilia turned to walk away, Kate came out of hiding.
